Ophelia perched on the footboard of her newly-assembled bed, fiddling with a ring of paint swatches. Her father had allowed her to commandeer the attic for her new bedroom and decorate it however she liked on the condition of something he hadn't told her about yet, other than that he needed her old room vacant. As if that made any sense. But she got new furniture out of it, including a snazzy wrought-iron canopy bed, so it was pretty cool.

She held the swatches up to the light filtering through the window and pursed her lips. "I think I want to paint one of the walls," she said thoughtfully, and looked over at her visiting friend and partner in room decorating.

"What color do you think, Wisp?" she asked the other girl, holding the ring of swatches out.

The slight blonde girl drummed her feet on the floor of the attic: the sound ricocheted off the walls, the light and airy space up at the top of the Prosper house. The canopy bed was cool. It was seriously cool. The paint swatches looked wild as well.

"Oh, let me see!" she said eagerly, and took the swatches; she flipped through them, sinking down into the splits on the floor, obviously to relax. Wisp was a little weird like that sometimes; she was also wearing three ponytails and a singlet painted like fruit salad. "What do you think about the alice blues? Maybe with some yellow? You could paint one wall a different colour, you know, like an accent wall!"

Ophelia tried to picture the room painted in light blue and yellow. It could work. "Anything to cover up this wallpaper," she said. The walls were still covered in some fading floral monstrosity that had probably been installed before her father had bought the house.

She took a few steps out into the middle of the room and looked up to the ceiling. At the sides it got kind of low, but at the center it was rather high. "And I want to find a light that looks like a chandelier," she declared. "I've seen them in furniture stores."

The wallpaper was pretty bad. It looked like the seventies had chewed up a flower arrangement and then puked it back out on the walls. "Seriously," Wisp said, getting excited. "I've seen some rad floral -- sconces? You know, like wall lights? They're really cool, too. Like it'd be kind of awesome if you did a theme where the walls were blue and yellow and the lamps looked like something -- flowers, or stars, right?"

Maybe flowers; the bed was already leafy. "I wonder if we could make stuff in wood shop. Like stools. Or we could go to the dump and see if we can get stuff there -- I know it sounds super gross but it's ecological."

"Oh, yeah," said Ophelia, liking the idea of themed light-fixtures. "And people throw out couches all the time," she added. She'd seen a pretty cool one at the end of the street a few days ago, a wing-backed sofa. It looked like the 1910s back with a vengeance. But she doubted it was still there.

"I want to get an easel up here," she said. "Having my own little studio would be cool, right?"

The blonde girl collapsed flat on her back, looking up at the gracious, high-arched ceiling of the attic. She was so jealous! "I am sooo jealous," she said. "This is basically the best room; I mean, it's all isolated and it's just your space, and you could have your studio up here, and you could even have a TV and things like that -- hey, you could have a microwave or a tea kettle, you could have hot drinks whenever you wanted. I live in a shoebox," she added tragically, "and the walls are really thin and Iree and Jace get really loud sometimes. But I love them anyway." (Just in case Phelly thought she didn't.)

She rolled onto her stomach, still flipping through swatches. "What about pale purple and yellow?"

"Depends what shade of yellow," answered Ophelia, joining Wisp on the floor and adding a rug to the list of things she needed for her room. "Pastel yellow could work."

"I'm just sorta confused why he made me move up here in the first place," shrugged Ophelia, pulling an interior design magazine off a pile by the foot of the bed. "Must be important. He got rid of all of her stuff to give me this room." Well, she didn't know he had gotten rid of it. It could be quietly molding in a climate-controlled U-Store-It somewhere.

"Jace and Iree are your sisters?" she asked. She didn't think she knew them.
PostPosted: Sat Dec 27, 2008 9:35 pm

"Oh -- yeah," she said, with the slight distraction that her 'sisters' were older than Ophelia and therefore weren't all pals. Wisp was used to everyone knowing her sisters: she smiled at Phelly, the little blue star on her cheek crinkling. "Iree's not really my sister, apparently her dad is a huge b*****d, using the b-word, and she lives with us. Jace is my big sister. She's the redhead with the metal legs?"

Good enough descriptor.

"And yeah, I'm thinking pastels, like a pale daffodil yellow," said Wisp thoughtfully. "Decorating is mondo to the max."

And: "Know what you need? One of those big standing mirrors. That's old school."

"I have one of those downstairs," said Ophelia, furrowing her brow. "I just haven't moved it yet because, in case you hadn't noticed, it's a bit tough to get stuff up here, and it's heavy, and if I drop it it'll break and that's bad luck, y'know?"

"So, like, lavender or periwinkle or something? Bluish-purple? and pale yellow?" She bit her lip and looked up, thinking about how the light played off the angles of the room. "Yeah, yeah, I like that."

"D'you want to help try to move the mirror?" she asked. "I dunno what my dad's doing right now. He might be able to help."

Or, she thought, he might not even be on the same planet.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 28, 2008 7:29 pm

"Yeah, totally," said Wisp, cheered. "Let's do it to it."

They both left downstairs for the mirror, as the blonde-headed girl pondered nothing more strenuous than periwinkle and pale yellow walls, tripping down behind Ophelia. Ophelia really did make a very pretty teenage girl in her opinion: she liked her short curly brunette hair, and she envied how tall she was. Phelly had long legs and a long back and no boobs, but she could sympathise with that.

Ophelia poked her head into the study for a second but found it empty (save for an entirely-out-of-place and inordinately-large cabbage, but she didn't think too hard about that). "He's not here," she shrugged to Wisp, heading towards her old room. The mirror was still standing in the corner. She grabbed one side of the frame.

"Get the other side, kay? And one, two, three... Lift."

It was heavy! Not as heavy as she'd expected but still heavy.

"Alright, uh, let's try not to drag it. I think it might mess up the floors."

They began to inch the mirror out the door.

It was so difficult doing it normally. Wisp stuck the corner of her tongue out of her mouth, narrowed her blue eyes and obviously concentrated; a thin ribbon of rainbow snaked out from her brooch, wrapping itself around the base of the mirror, tilting it up a little so that it suddenly became much easier to carry -- not entirely not-difficult, as it was still heavy, but it was like there was a third person assisting. "I can't control it very well," she apologised, "or I'd make it carry the whole thing, but I think we'd end up with Ceiling Mirror."

"Hey, that's cool," said Ophelia, noticing the rainbow. It certainly made things easier. Slowly, they got the mirror across the living room towards the ladder. She went ahead of Wisp when they got to it, moving slowly backwards up the steps.

"Steady now," she muttered. She'd heard that in a movie somewhere and thought it sounded cool.
PostPosted: Mon Dec 29, 2008 7:07 pm

"Upsydaisy," Wisp agreed cheerfully, who had also heard that somewhere and thought it sounded cute. Both girls carefully heaved at the mirror towards the incredibly daunting task of getting it up the ladder; she hadn't really thought about it before, but it was going to be mondo difficult.

Ophelia was something like halfway up the ladder when she felt her grip slipping. She tried to adjust her hold on the frame, but it was no good.

Everything happened extremely fast then. First, the mirror fell. Or maybe Ophelia fell first, because what wound up happening involved her floating in the air suspending the entire thing maybe two inches from the floor.

"Um," said Ophelia, who had not thought about this potential use of flight. She set the mirror down. "Um."

She grinned helplessly at Wisp.
