The HAPPENINGs:

-fantastical diary entry thing-
The Plague. a sickness named like the old one, but ten times deadlier and faster spreading. It was strangely foreign. Sudden. Wiped out most of the Earth's population except for a lucky couple of million or so in North America and Asia countries. Cities fell and became infested with a sort of mutated unknown species soon named Shade. They hide away in dark, damp places such as sewers and houses or nasty buildings during the day. At night the Shades emerge to wiggle into other places to feed. Cats, dogs, and other animals have become pretty much extinct because of the Shade, but humans are still their favorite snack. If you're not careful in picking a place to stay the night, they'll swarm into your seemly protected place and that will be the end for you! You'll have to find a good tall building as they're terribly afraid of heights and fire. Oh. Birds are still around... they're mostly crows or blue jays.
The Plague. also gave birth to strange beings. It wasn't until after what was left of humans went into hiding did they appear. They aren't as stupid and driven by their hunger as the Shade are. They're called Dragoons. Supposedly aliens of some sort as they are highly intelligent and organized. Shades are afraid of them more than heights, so I guess to be wary of them even more. Dragoons seem to be human on steriods or something. They're extremely tall and clad in what looks like metal armor. It's usually very decorative that probably has something to do with rank. One time, I saw a Dragoon riding a creature that looked like a Shade horse. Didn't stick around long enough to find out because we try to avoid the High Hills where the Dragoons live.
NEXT

Oh. Yesterday Kevin died from Shade wounds. We were able to bring him back to our Safe Spot, but he still passed in the night. He kept saying "I saw them. . . saved me from. . . they . . ." and I couldn't understand him any better than that because he was coughing up blood. I also have a few injuries from pulling him out. Daisy wasted most of our medical supplies on him though...

...looks like the end.
Do you want to quit?
YES NO CANCEL

Current Setting
Gp: Unsafe Safe Spot; Apartment Building/City
Up: Old Docks; River/City

Brought to you by...

Shade;
Nasty, vile creatures. They're black with bright red eyes. They have human heads, torso and arms. They drag their snake-like lower bodies everywhere, able to climb the walls, ceiling and vertical surfaces easily. Excellent at hiding and very fast, sharp rows of teeth... but they'll fight each other over a human. Get the scent, they go nuts. That's when you have to be really careful, but it's good when they get distracted with one another. They also eat each other, the dead ones. They're afraid of the Dragoons.

Dragoon;
The invaders after The Plague. and Shade. They're smart, organized. Sometimes they even play with you, like a cat plays with its captured mouse. They use strange guns, shooting out these nets with weights and a sort of shocking... it's paralyzing. Hard to escape and when you do, you find that it's hard to run too. Usually they try that first, and then bring out the sharp crossbows or blades. Best to avoid them if you can. Big, humanoid. Metal covers every inch of their body, molded like some type of medieval knight's armor, but there aren't any spaces. Lenses over their eyes, a blue or greenish color, maybe a few holes for 'breathing'. We don't get that close.

High Hills;
Where the Dragoons live and also where they take the dead and alive humans that they hunt down or happen to find. No one knows what goes on there, what they do to them. They know you're never seen again. Except Cancer, but Cancer's not sharing anything. Won't talk about it... so it has to be something bad. The area was once that of outside the city, a bit hilly and nice, until they built their bases there. Domed buildings. No windows. One door for in, and one door for out.

Us;
Somehow, we survived the sickness. Our loved ones usually dying from it or those strangers you lived next to... they're pretty much gone, but we're still here. Except we can do things they could not.

Weaponry;
Stuff from the time before The Plague. doesn't work. We don't know why, we can't explain this. Any of it. Answers aren't that important to us, we just want it to end. We just want to live. To do that, we need to fight. Guns don't work. Only those of the Dragoon and we have no idea how to work those. They're useless anyway, they're just nets that won't damage the metal on those invaders. If we're lucky, we'll find a gun the Dragoons forgot to pick up when they had first rounded the humans up, pretending to save them, but really sending them to their deaths... sometimes they'll work, but after a few rounds it will jam or something. Sometimes a Shade will steal it or break it. We have to use blades, or any sharp pointy things we can find. Bows, arrows, shoes...

...The Plague.

the WORLD is...

BLACK

-bad party goes here-
Capicorn, Scorpio and Virgo under the employment of the Dragoon. Hired to hunt down the remaining humans who are launching attacks against them. They're bribed and paid with whatever materials they desire, promised with whatever they cannot give them 'yet'.

Let me hear you scream...
Name: Capricorn
Once Name: Kiyoshi Totsuka
Age: 30
Height: 6' exactly
Equipment: His weapon ensemble includes a crossbow, two knives, a scimitar, and a weighted chain. A belt at his waist holds necessities like matches and lockpicks.
Power/Skills: Able to create a barriers for capture or protection against attacks. Caution: useless when wet (In the water sense, mind you.)
Description: Kiyoshi wears black stealth gear, complete with body armor and soundless boots. His most prominent features are his cold, gray eyes and the scar across the bridge of his nose.
Bio: Kiyoshi lives only to reside in darkness. This has been true even long before the Plague. His family had all been in espionage and the fact that the world is a lot different now doesn't alter that fact. He's been trained in the killing arts since the age of six and accomplished his first assassination at the age of thirteen. Upon the death of his boss at the hands of the Shade, Kiyoshi was immediately hired by the Dragoons. It is here that his new life begins...

Happy Birthday!
Name: Scorpio
Once Name: Lyra Anderson
Age: 7
Height: 4'0"
Equipment: A compass, a vial of a blue substance around her neck and a device from the Dragoons which seems to serve no purpose until it's opened, then it contains lovely little "sticky lights" (small bombs, yo).
Power/Skills: Her spit, blood and other fluids are acid to others and things. It can melt almost anything within a matter of seconds, but pour a little water on it and it's not so flesh-eating. :'3
Description: Fairly small, Lyra used to like to crawl in hidden places to hide and play which took away time for outside, giving her the pale skin that will easily tan in a few days (if she ever got enough sun). Blonde hair and after the plague, reddish eyes.
Bio: Lyra lived with her mother and father, moved into the city from the rural area a few months before the plague hit. She had a small form of it, changing eye color and the certain parts of her body (acid spit, yah). Her father had tried to kill her, thinking her a monster and a bit loopy from the whole death deal, but when he failed he just jumped off of the building. You know, sucidical and all. Her mother decided to go with the Dragoons when they appeared, taking Lyra with her and when she did that, she found they weren't really helping humans. Lyra didn't see her mother after that, but she met a few strange-looking Dragoon fellows and two humans who helped them. The Shade don't bother her anymore either...

Name: Virgo
Once Name: Kayla Hynd
Age: 25
Height: 5' 4"
Equipment: Crinkled old map, metal claws that go over her fingers, a shield (a very good one too, not one of the ancient wood ones), and a backpack with the basic medical supplies.
Power/Skills: Can affect peoples emotions, within short range. Also is very acrobatic thanks to gymnastics, (not so girly any more, huh? ;P)
Bio: Life wasn't exactly the best for Kayla before the Plague. She had been living in jail since she was twenty. Five long years of her life were spent there, until the Plague came. The cells were unlocked, it wasn't any safe out there than it was inside, and she was free again. As soon she found out about what was going on, she sided with the obvious winner, the Dragoons, and ever since then has been working for them.

WHITE

-good party here-
Sagittarius, Aquarius and Aries who lead and aid what humans they find against the Dragoon. They're set and determined to take them down at all costs... or so claim to be.

Name: Sagittarius
Once Name: Mercedes Anne Stevens
Age: 21
Height: 5'4"
Equipment: A thick belt with the following items fastened on: a canteen, a sheathed Bowie knife, and a pouch containing a notebook/planner, two pens, a sharpie, and her wallet. A bow and self-made arrows wrapped in an old windbreaker. Some rather stylish sunglasses, a straw hat, and a bottle of apple scented lotion.
Power/Skills: Enhanced eyesight, godlike hand with a bow. Does being on the school's track and water polo teams count?
Bio: Bright, happy, unambitious, Mercedes lived in a small farming community with a large family. She attended a year of college in the big city before realizing that as much as she enjoyed learning, school was not her cup of tea. However, the strong willed gingertop had taken business classes, and after a few loans and a lot of odd jobs, she was able to open up a tiny book store. Then the plague hit. She was well adapted to living independently and on her own, though hiding from the Shade took some getting used to... lucky she's so athletic. And of course with her passionate and righteous nature, Mercedes knows she will not be able to rest if she simply stands by and lets things happen.

Name: Aquarius
Once Name: Loyd H. Francia
Age: 22
Height: 5'7"
Equipment: A metal stick, carries a few simple supplies in his backpack (First-aid, a little food, water, two books, matches, one malfunctioning gun.)
Power/Skills: Really good at remembering things he saw or read, can formulate plans effectively.
Bio: Before the plague, things were fine for Loyd, but most would agree with him. His family wasn't rich, but he was smart and passed a ton of his classes with A's. He was in college, ready to graduate in less than a year, when the plague hit. Now he has to find a way to survive, he has to find a way to end this.

Name: Aries
Once Name: Jekyll Laurence
Age: 22
Height: 5' 11"
Equipment: Dual swords
Power/Skills: Runs faster than most people (due to years of running from the baddies)
Bio: He was on vacation in Egypt when the Plague started. He was helping the search of ruins when his jeep was attacked. It tossed him out and all of his co-workers were killed. He survived and, using a pair of twin swords, he has fended off his home from any attackers, human or otherwise.

and GREY.

-undecided party-
Gemini, Libra and Cancer. A group just surviving in such a world while trying to keep their human qualities. Cancer seems to be an escapee from the High Hills.

Well hey there . . .
Name: Gemini
Once Name: Trice Larsen
Age: 22
Height: 5' 6"
Equipment: A lot of knives [the better to poke you with!] and a few medkits; also a vial of poison, and a bit of jewelry. Oh be quiet.
Power/Skills: Sneaky, Gemmi is, always tricking people, and she likes to use her newly-gained skill of invisibility [which is unfortunately lame when she's wet] as much as possible. Whee.
Bio: Working as a burglar suited Gemmi, and she enjoyed her years as a lowly if cunning thief immensely. But the good years ended when the plague came, and now she finds it's harder to choose between Good and Greed than she'd first expected...

Name: Libra
Once Name: Sarah Johnstad
Age: 23
Height: 5'7"
Equipment: The packmule for her group; medical kits, any food they find along the way (mostly canned), two watering cans and binoculars.
Power/Skills: Healing wounds with her spit and/or tears.
Bio: Sarah Johnstad had been planning her wedding, her longtime boyfriend proposed, when he became ill. Soon it spread, so fast amongst her neighbors. It seemed to skip her until after he passed in the hospital, tears and snot running down her face, she herself was put into that hospital. She was one of the worst cases, the doctors pretty much just put them off in a room to die, where they were forgotten as the Shade appeared. The Dragoons came, "saving" the rest. She got better. Finally able to leave the place of death, she met Cancer and soon after, Gemini. She's scared, terribly afraid, but she's going to live--they're going to live, no matter what.

Name: Cancer
Once Name: Tsuyo N. Hakashi
Age: 25
Height: 6'1"
Equipment: Wakizashi, Katana, and four Tonto. He also has a rope that wraps around his waist and shoulder. The ropes has a small bag on it carrying simple supplies like food, matches, and the likes. He also has a small bottle of poison.
Power/Skills: Immunity to most poisons and diseases, body heals faster than normal, but to do so increases his metabolism to a dangerous level. He is also swift and accurate.
Bio: Tsuyo is unable to remember much about his past since he awoke within that strange facility. At the moment, the Shade were already everywhere. He somehow managed to escape the facility and after walking for what seemed like weeks, he came across a home that reminded him of something he once knew. Inside he found some blades and relized that these were most likely his own as he found his skill with them to be unbelievable. He has been traveling around trying to figure out who or what he was.

Sagittarius, Aquarius and Aries have discovered a 'hideout' or Safe Spot. A dirty apartment in a tall building, unfortunately, it is no longer safe. The three dead bodies found inside, two found ripped to shreds by Shade in the bathroom and the third body stuffed in a closet. Their supplies are half gone, the medical kit used up and food only a few cans. The dead have attracted the Shade, but they hide lower until the dark has fully cast itself. A computer that actually works, if only for email and a Candy Land game, sits upon the desk where inside is the details of the many days that the group found inside had lived through. What now?

Gemini, Libra and Cancer have been fine for awhile. The day before though, they were discovered by two Dragoon and chased pretty far from their 'base' to the docks of the river that runs through the city. The Dragoon were thrown off their trail... but for how long?

User ImageSitting in a corner, Loyd had a look of depression on his face. It was unlike him to have such an emotion about him, but he couldn't wrap his mind around the situation. "We can't stay here any longer..." He quietly said, unsure of what forces could here them. "We have no more healing supplies, little food, and nothing to gain from being in this area." He stood up and grabbed his rod, bracing himself on it to help balance himself. He wasn't confident yet, but he may have come up with something that could get them at least outside to find somewhere else that has something they could live off.

He went to the computer and followed the power cord into the wall. As far as he knew, electricity is down everywhere, so how come this computer has power. Is it possible for the outlet to actually have power? He didn't want to unplug it though as it may short it or something. And to short it out now would be a waste. He looked to the sink, and began a small trek over to it. Loyd twisted the knob and saw the water pour, he was glad the water has not given out on them yet, it was part of his plan. He looked to the others, and asked, "How well do you think electical shock works on these things?" He's never came by a working power source before, so he has never seen the results. But if it works, he could possibly get this small party out of here by the next morning.

One final smack and the window shattered. Sarah tossed the rock she used to break into the car behind her. Her eyes wide with excitement, hoping and thinking she would find something grand inside. The cars were piled for some reason, she couldn't figure out how that had happened. Some had even slid off into the river. "Nothing," she sighed and climbed back on top of the green Honda. She liked to think herself as the greatest scavenger ever! Anything but useless which was what she was unless one of the others needed a little of her magical tears. Not a fighter like the others. Nuh-uh. Hoping to find more than just an empty car of dust and decay once more, she jumped onto the delivery truck and grabbed the door to keep from falling back. Its windows were already open so she had only peek inside to-- "S-s-shade!" she froze and stuttered, trying not to scream and wake it up. Wait, it's not clawing my face off... Sarah slowly lifted a finger to poke its human-like head as she eyed the sharp claws and long barbed tail that was in place of where its legs would be if it were man. Nothing. It was dead.
Relief flooded through her and she opened the door to drag the thing out. It flopped out on the ground and rolled over to look at her with its glazed, dead red eyes. A shiver went down her spine before she turned to climb back into the truck. Instantly the hairs on her arms and neck rose. At first, she just shrugged it off that it was because of the dead Shade and continued her search beneath the seats. A glint of silver caught her eye underneath the pedal and when she reached down, she pulled out a swiss army knife. Admiring it until she heard something move in the dark space behind her. The reason for the awareness, it was there. The woman flew from the truck to leap over onto the other car and scramble to the ground. Putting the cars behind her, she walked swiftly back to where her 'team' would be, holding onto the knife tightly. A bit of distace, and her heart slowed to normal. The tiredness she felt earlier returned and now all she wanted to do was rest.

User ImageAs Sarah went to scout the area, Tsuyo couldn't keep his mind still. It was amazing, he thought on what had just happened moments ago. He didn't think it would be so easy to get away from these things, not that it would be difficult, but it wasn't expected. He couldn't help but worry about his companions, they reassured him that they were fine, but he was still concerned. He finally decided to take in the surrondings, and relized the horrible truth. "I can't believe our world looks like this." He muttered to himself. The entire world looked as if it were drained of life, he wasn't sure how it looked before, but he hoped it was better than this. He then heard a noise from Sarah's direction.

Seeing Sarah running back, Tsuyo gripped his wakizashi hanging on the backside of his waist. He didn't know what was going on, but he had to be sure he was ready for it. She arrived and was obviously worn out. "What is wrong?" Tsuyo asked, keeping his eyes in the direction of her retreat. Was it the Shade? He thought, but that wouldn't make sense, it is still too bright out for them... maybe it isn't and just feels that way.

Sarah paused before slowing her steps as she neared Tsuyo, rubbing one green eye. "Oh, just tired..." She yawned and looked down at her find. It was actually scary to be holding a sharp object unless she was angry, then she sometimes just felt like stabbing. Of course, she was too afraid and even thinking about it unsettled her. She poked the dull end until it folded in and dug her fingernail into another edge to pull out a small screwdriver. Then pushed that back in to place it safely in the pocket of her dirty blue jeans. The run from the Dragoons had tired her, as it had taken place through most of the night and morning, depriving her of good sleep. Any sleep. She probably wouldn't be able to anyway, her thoughts would instantly kick back into freak-out mode. "Tsuyo?" she tilted her head, noticing that he was looking in the direction she came. Sarah turned to look herself. The cement littered with a bit of trash, the docks with a few vessels still tied and the piling of cars was what she saw. Birdless sky, it was actually... quiet. Not at night when you could hear the Shade moving beneath you in the buildings. That was the part she hated and felt most like a child, curled into her fear. "Oh, there's also a dead Shade over there. I couldn't tell what killed it, looked like it died by itself."
Shade. She couldn't remember who first came up with the word. It fit, seeing how they stayed in dark places out of the sun and whatnot, she guessed. She didn't want him to go look, but stay. Where was the other member of their group? Oh, her thoughts were going to turn dark and she would make herself worry... Now she expected the Dragoon to pop up out of nowhere with a Gemini head in hand and guns pointed right for them! No, they caught them alive. Oh, wonderful. Alive to be taken somewhere and tortured! Eaten! It wouldn't be so bad as long as they did it fast. Unlike the Shade who-- Her brow knotted itself and she turned back to Tsuyo. Shut up. It's bright afternoon.

He barely listened to Loyd's ramblings, instead throwing a ragged tennis ball against the wall, watching as it bounced back to him. "No one cares Loyd. When we leave we'll leave, but we should get going today if we're really worried about food. I can't stand beans and tomato sludge for much longer." He got up, grunting with the effort and walked along the old, dust covered boards, eacj of the creaking with his weight. He peered through a digustingly filthy and broken window, and at the ruins beyond, the only traces of mankind, large piles of firey rubble. The ash in the air made him cough, and he peered to the red sky, hoping for death to rain down upon them. He frowned, and went to another room, hoping to escape whatever it was that he was rambling about now, something involving water or electric shocks. He didn't care, walking into another partially destroyed room.

User ImageTsuyo loosened his grip on the blade, finding comfort in doing so. He breathed out slowly, releasing his tension, relaxing himself. "You should sleep while you can, we will not have so many oppurtunities." He looked towards her, carrying a soft smile, showing some affection towards his companion. He didn't like seeing his friends tearing themselves apart just to continue the journey. Everybody is tired and everybody needs to sleep, but when it is apparent to others, it is best to calm down and rest. "We can..." He began, but after scoping around, he noticed that Trice is gone, "Where's Trice?" He sighed, this wouldn't be the first time Trice has done this to them. "Nevermind, he's probably out doing his own form of scouting. Either case, I can stand watch. Get yourself some sleep before you pass out from exaustion." He looked back in the direction where Sarah ran from, thinking about what she had said.

Eyes widening quickly, Tsuyo turned to Sarah and asked "Wait! Did you say died by itself?" He found this odd, allowing his mind to race with possibilities. Maybe there was a way to kill the Shade without haveing to combat them. He has never heard of a Shade starving, but never took the time to do observe that either. He's never seen one in the light, maybe it died from it. There was so much that he didn't know. He had to claim that corpse and at least try figuring out what happened to it, but he also couldn't leave Sarah alone. With a final sigh, Tsuyo decided it would be best to let her sleep first, and he could always claim the corpse later. The dead can't move, right? He thought as he looked back to Sarah, "Forget it, get yourself some sleep okay?"

User ImageWith a sigh, Loyd looked in Jekyll's direction, seeing him enter a room. "I understand we need to leave, and I also understand your fustration, but we need a plan to get through this. Or do you not remember why we ran out of medical supplies?" He indicated at all the first aid kits sprawled on the floor, showing their success in acquiring a 'safe house' was actually a complete failure. There was nothing safe about this room, the Shade are crawling all over, there was almost no food, the walls could give out at any moment. The only thing that made this room special is that it had a working computer, something with actual energy flowing through it. "So can you just bear with me, and help me come up with something that doesn't involve attacking them directly?" He asked this with true compassion, he knew they couldn't survive another full on assult with these creatures, at least not in this sorry excuse of a fortification. He just wanted to get out of here alive.

He shut off the water and went back to the computer, another thing that occupied his mind was the programs on the computer. There weren't many, almost all websites were down, but a few common email sites were up. There was also the Candy Land game, which didn't make sense to him as he has not seen a child's body through the corpses that lay within the room, but he cannot assume anything as it could just as easily be that the previous family tried to run or the corpse lays within a stomach of a Shade or is dead elsewhere. It just peaked his curiosity as he went ahead and started the game up.

Her shoulders sagged and she shuffled a ways from the river. A small multicolored blanket pulled from her small pack to lay out on the ground. Normally she would have sought a more comfortable place, but she didn't want to be far from Tsuyo or Trice, if she was even here. One of her sneakers slid into a sticky piece of gum. "Ugh, please watch where you spit your gum..." she mumbled, attempting to remove it without the aid of a penny. Sarah looked up at the shout of command. "Yes, it didn't look like it was hurt by any outside force. I could've missed something though." She explained before lying on the hard surface, the minty freshness smeared onto the wall, but she only laid staring at Tsuyo. Why? Well, the Shade's death just fully entered her brain and now she was trying to figure it out. They feared sun and light, which only hurt their eyes she supposed, because they did not burn or anything. Shade usually ate their dead, too, most likely to keep from starving. She wasn't sure, guesswork from what she saw...
