There are said to have been discussions among at least one or two people within WWE creative about the idea of building up to a single world title and champion who would headline every PPV and defend against wrestlers on both brands. The reason this has been discussed is that back in the time when titles were over with wrestling fans they knew who “the champ” was as there was only one top guy. This doesn’t happen now with two separate world champions on two separate brands.
Since the creation of two world titles, one for each television show, many feel the company essentially created two Intercontinental champions instead of two credible world champions. The basis for this is that in the 1980s the Intercontinental title was used to main event house shows and drew well, but on its own wasn’t going to sellout major arenas. While some title matches in the brand era have drawn well, most haven’t meant a thing when looking at PPV buyrates. The general feeling is that the generation of wrestling fans today no longer see the world title as fans may have 10, 20 or even 30 years ago. Instead they see it as a prop and nothing more.
It should be noted that when this idea was brought up to Vince McMahon he was said to be completely negative on the idea. So it doesn’t appear there are any plans to go in this direction anytime soon.

I agree with them on that one. Back in the 80's and early 90's the IC championship really meant something where as now days since all the changes have happened we are blessed with Champions like Marella or however u spell it and regal. That title has simply went to s**t and I think merging it would bring up the prestige of all the titles and even make rivalries that dont revolve around a title a little more credible

Ils intent he needs to read up on what IC Champs used to be, because he doesnt fit it. He cant wrestle like the IC champs from back in the day and there is alot of new talent that could do much better with it. Hell Kofi and CM alone could have great matches and fueds over that title but instead they seem to have some other "great" idea

A feud I'd love to see with the WWE title would be. John Morrison(Nitro) v.s. Jeff Hardy. I Loved their ladder match. That dropkick from the top of the ladder was picture perfect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLjSRzlurSwSecond 1:04

I have to say that I'm really 50/50 on the idea. I agree with what they pointed out, but the rosters are too unbalanced to be really valuable to do so. I let you guess which roster would get the biggest piece of the cake...
Not to mention that if they go on with that idea, they will most likely cut in the main event wrestlers, and keep there the ones who, for them, draws, leaving the real talent in the shadows. So we would see more Batista, Cena, JBL, HBK and HHH, but 3 times a week instead of 1.
Of course, this would be the opportunity to make some other wrestlers of the rosters shine, make feuds valuable without titles and be able to work on more inter-promotional stuff (the last one, in my opinion, would be the winning solution), but do you REALLY think they'll do that? They drop characters after 1 promo because the boss is afraid he'll lose a nickel, so I would be more than surprised if they take any risks and introduce feuds that might not draw as they wish.
And yes, the IC title was valuable back then, but we have to think that in the 80s and 90s, it was one hell of a prestige in the fans eyes. The matches over it were more then interesting, which is almost not the case today. Barely defended, champ stuck in lower midcard, no defense at Wrestlemania since 2002 and not even close to change with the MITB, change hands when they think people gets bored of the champ (but we can't since there's NOTHING around it), etc.
It's not the fact there's 2 separate world titles that makes the main event scene not credible nor weaker, it's the whole management who's afraid to take risks, even if these would work.
