First I'll say that I am not positive if this is the right genre to place these guys, so if I am wrong feel free to move this into the correct sub-forum.

Secondly, I love these guys. They are from Greece and they have a very cool sound. I first was introduced to their album Theogonia and I say it was very good indeed. Comments?

Their older stuff was Black but their newer stuff is Gothic, I still feel they are more Black then they are Gothic.

I enjoyed their album Non Serviam the best of what I've heard.

Rotting Christ are my favorite band... My favourite album of theirs is Kronos, so far.

I would call their last work Gothic. Definetely not. I think that it's Black metal...

We are both talking about Theogonia, right? Because I could not imagine how that could be Gothic. It's Melodic Black metal.

Most of the time when something is labeled "Melodic Black Metal", its Gothic. The whole BM genre is composed of melodies, so there is no such thing as "Melodic Black Metal" because all Black Metal is melodic.

Does that mean there's no such thing as melodic death metal either? xd

No, Death Metal relies on rhythem more then is does on melody mostly. Black Metal is pretty much all melody, which is why Black Metal can create those awesome atmospheres. Death Metal can do that too but they do it differently, usually using more rhythem to set the mood rather then melody.

Example:
Death - Entombed

Black - Nargaroth

and as I said before, most of the time, not all, but most of the time when its labeled Melodic Black its usually Gothic, especially if its symphonic. Otherwise, its usually just plain old Black Metal.

Hmmmn...your examples helped me understand somewhat. Unfortunately, I'm not a musician and know next to nothing about music theory, so I can't really say anything intelligent in dissent, even if I could think of something.

On another note, hearing those two back to back reminded me why death, particularly Swedeath, is my favorite of the extreme metal genres. I've tried, but I just can't appreciate black nearly as much.

Well, I wasn't expecting you to believe me completely. I found out that information from someone who knows Black Metal like the back of their hand and they explained it better then I did. I suck at explaining things, but I think I got what I was trying to say across.
