Requiem for a Dream on IMDb
So in orchestra one day, my teacher plays this song and the whole class gets excited. Having never heard the song I am confused but think it's an interesting song. My friend asks me after class if I knew what the song was from, I say no but the title, "Requiem for a Dream", sounded familiar. She tells me it's a movie and we part ways to go to our classes. A couple days later she sleeps over and tells me we're watching, you guessed it, Requiem for a Dream. She warns me in the beginning "This movie is so trippy and it's depressing." but I agree to watch it anyway...
So an hour and forty minutes later I star dumbfounded at the rolling credits trying to process what I'd just seen.
It's hard to describe the movie without spoilers so I'll just say the kind of very beginnning:
It is the horrifying story of four people's downward drug fueled spiral. Harry Goldfarb(Jared Leto) is a typical heroin junkie who with his also herion addicted girlfriend Marion Silver(Jennifer Connelly) and his long time best friend Tyrone C. Love(Marlone Wayans). Harry's mother, Sara Goldfarb(Ellen Burstyn) is obsessed with TV and all she really does with her live is sit infront of the TV gaining weight. Things rise in the middle and get better, but then the downward fall starts.
It was amazing, it was depressing, it made me never want to touch heroin.
I don't know what to say about it but since I've seen that movie I am pissed that Ellen Burstyn didn't win the Emmy for best female actress that year. Her performance was amazing. The song, Lux Aeterna(What the song is really called and isn't called Requiem for a Dream) that started my fascination with this movie fits it perfectly as well.
Let's talk style of the movie too, it was interesting they way they do some scenes. Rapid scenes flashing by quickly and some split screens I tought were very interesting. The first time I watched the movie the split screens really bugged me but I watched it again and I thought it was quite clever doing that instead of cutting back and forth between characters or objects in some instances. As for the rapid scenes, that's one of the things I think of when I remember this movie, especially in the scenes where they're taking drugs. It doesn't actually show anyone being injected with heroin or not really anyone doing drugs except for smoking outside of these rapid flashes of drug paraphanalia and some blood cells then a pupil dialating. I think how the end was edited was awesome too, how they edit all those scenes to sort of flash by.
I'd reccommend this movie to anyone but be warned that there drug use, some female breasts, graphic sex but no naughty bits shown(doesn't make much sense, does it? It will if you watch the movie.), and there is some violence and a little bit of gore but I'm terribly squeamish and I was fine with the little gore so if I was then most people should be.
And yes, this movie can be disturbing. I won't lie, it's an intense movie.
If you think you can stand that then I'm telling you put it on your must see list.
I give it atleast a 9/10. I loved it.
