Akantor: Wyvern

A wyvern truly shrouded in mystery. Known to some as the black god and to others as the tyrant of fire, this large and brutal creature is known to the Guild simply as Akantor...

Quest Name: Rise to the Summit
Reward: 36000z
Contract Fee: 3000z
Time Limit: 50
Location: Battleground

To unlock Akantor you must beat the following HR6 quests:

Pink Dance in the Jungle
The Fierce Black Horn
Black Rock in the Swamp
Attack of the Rathalos (Azure)
Blue Sky, Pink Earth
Deny the Silver Rathalos
Find the Golden Phantom

All those quests leads up to

The Approaching Gaoren

Beat the Gaoren and Akantor is followed up.

Akantor's Weaknesses:

Dragon
Thunder (On his face)

Akantor's Attacks:

Charge

Akantor charges at you, like a Tigrex. The only main thing about this attack is that Akantor tends to follow you. So usually at the beginning of the quest, he will charge. There is a way to jump out the way, but you must time it right. When he gets close enough, look at his right hand. And not your right, his right. Some people tend to confuse it with their right. Once he's close and that claw hits the ground, you run to the left, your left, and try to jump it. If you can't do it, then don't worry about it. When you're close to him and he decides to charge, run to his far side. He won't be able to hit you their. His tail also can hit you if you run too close to it. So try not to get confident and attack his tail while he's still charging.

Roar

He slowly rises up on his back legs, takes a deep breath, and roars. Just like a Tigrex, this Roar will hit you if you're in the circle part of it. Being at the very end of his tail won't get you hit, but you probably will cover your ears in pain if you don't have High-Grade Earplug. But be warned. This "attack" always summons up...

Eruption

This attack usually follows up if he's digging or if he's screaming. Their will be 7-9 Eruptions randomly appearing over the place. Watch carefully at the Eruptions. There will be a spot where 2 Eruptions come out at the same place. His head is there. So if you want to run up and attack his tail, go on ahead.

Dig

He digs under the ground, either to follow you and attack you, or use Eruption. You'll be able to tell if he's around you. An earth quake will come. So just run until he decides to come up. But don't get near him while he's rising from the ground because it leads to something I'd like to call...

The Cheap Shot (Defense Lowering "Attack")

If you're close to Akantor while he's rising from the ground, you'll go sent flying with a white stench following you. It lowers your defense for a good amount of time. So try and stay away from him once he rises. Or just attack the tail.

Wind Tunnel:

In the cut scene when he walks out the lava, he screams and a huge wind tunnel comes right out of his mouth. He borrows this attack from a Kushala Daora. It starts out small, but then widens. So to dodge this attack, just stay to the Akantor's side.

Tail Whip

This attack is hard to dodge if you're attacking his left claw. He turns around slightly, and swings his tail. Since his tail is so long, it can hit you if you're attacking his left claw. So always try to cut that off. Either that or run to his right side.

Charging Bite:

After he charges, just like a Tigrex, he lunges forward and bites you. This has to be the easiest attack to dodge, so I'm not going to bother with this one.

Bite:

Usually when you're in his face, he tries to bite you. Just quickly move to either the left or the right to dodge this.

Upward "Swing":

He opens his mouth, put his bottom jaw in the earth, and quickly takes it out, sending rocks to hit the earth. If you can't jump out the way of this attack while you're in front of him, then it will send you flying into the air. I think he borrows this move from a Blangonga. To dodge this, just roll to the left or right.

Jump:

After he charges, like a Tigrex he jumps into the air and hits the ground. Simple way to dodge this. Don't stand near him.

Bodyslam:
He slowly rises into the air, raises both of his arms, and hits the ground with an Earth-Shaking force. If you're too close to him, you'll lose balance until he gets up. To dodge both of these attacks, just stand far from him.

Weapons to use against him:

Pretty much any good Dragon Attribute weapon. Alot of people tend to use the Gun Chariot. I use the Smoulder Dragonsword.

Defense needed:

I'd say about 400+ as he hits really hard. The first time I did this quest, I used Tigrex S set with some Earplug Jewels to get High-Grade Earplug, to block his screams, Auto-Tracking to see where he is when Akantor's underground, and Fast Eating so I can eat fast.

Weapon Strategies:

Longswords:

I mainly use this against all monsters. If you're using a Tachi, always attack his claws, until they break. When they break, he falls. After he falls, attack his back. In about 2-3 Spirit Blade Dances, the spikes on his back will come off. Since Tachis can't block, try your best to dodge all of Akantor's attacks. Mainly go for his tail. That's the downfall for Tachi users. Once you got his both of his claws off, aim on getting those tusks off.

Great Swords

This was harder than I thought. I died twice before killing him. I used the Eternal Eradicator to kill him, but for people who don't have that, I suggest using a high Raw Powered Great sword and something with 440+ defense. Now the thing is.

Head Hits:

Don't use Charge Attack all the time. He always counter attacked me before I could hit him. The only time you should use it is when he lands from Roaring, when he's turning around, or when he slamed his tail and does a roar or in basic terms, when he's taking a 6 second break. That or Flash him. Once you Flash him, charge, and he will then return back to normal. He then will shake his head and you'll be able to unleash it all out. Hopefully you'll hit him. But other than don't use CA all the time. Do some random slashes(O and /+0).

Claw and feet attacks:

Well it's really simple on this one. He should rarely hit you unless his tail hits you. So I suggest staying to his right claw until it's cut. Then attack his back when he falls. Once after that move to the right claw and repeat the process. I suggest using the O and the Triangle+0 attack when your attacking his claws.

Tail:

I don't really suggest going for this unless you really get pissed off by his tail. The only time you really can attack his tail is when he's taking a break, doing Eruption and you block his scream or have High Grade Earplug, or when he does body slam, but there still is a chance the tail will hit you. But it doesn't do much damage. Other than that, go crazy if you want to cut that off.

Gunlances:

Use somethng with Guard +2. Stand in front of him and guard-stab him in the face. After both the tusks are broken , move on to the chest. Hide under him and block, and his back will break. "Yes I said that right: hitting his chest broke his back."(Who knew, huh?) You'll see a little square patch of armor on his chest, aim for that. After that, work on the tail. When he does his lunge/gouge attack, block, then run under him and hit the tail. There are other opportunities to hit the tail as well, for instance when he swings his tail at you, then does it fully towards you, you can hit it 1-3 times. Also when he is burrowing/unburrowing you get the chance to hit the tail a few times.

Bows:

Bow needed:
Akantor Bow:
attack: 300 raw, 200 dragon
-------------------
Okay, this guide is simply easy.

The only thing you have to worry about is his charge and Eruption.
--------------------------------

when he does his roar thing, stand about half of an akantor away from him. or maybey 3/4 of an akantor. then do you peirces on his head.

Just keep attacking his head when you have the chance. Then what you do, is when you dont have an opening attack his back with peirce. When he is in rage mode then you have to be very cautious of his charge attack. Don't worry much about his wind tunnel. Just stay to his side. (like a blangonga)

Dual Swords:

You're aiming for the legs, use the demonized triangle-circle and roll out quickly at opportunities, and like the longsword portion, when it falls you can demonize away at the spikes. you have to be more careful around the left forelimb (his left) as the tail can hit you if he lashes it

If the fangs are what you want, then wait for him to attack and in the brief period where it retracts its head (after biting, it pauses for a bit) use a circle and roll away. if that's not working, just attack the legs repeatedly and run to his face when he falls, that works too

With high earplugs, when it roars, you have a free opening to sharpen, drink potions, etc etc. don't go for the head when it's coming back down, or you'll get hit. or you can run around him and run wild with combos on the tail tip.

Generally, try to stay outside of akantor, or risk getting pummelled by roar/bodyslam/burrowing/charge. Along the sides are mostly safe since duals are quite mobile and if you get too close and he's going to do something you can just roll out.

Small movements by akantor do small damage which accumulate over time so keep an eye on the hp, just in case. the main damage should come from eruptions, which can practically kill you if you're unlucky (e.g. you get hit by one and fly into a corner), but I think eruptions tend not to happen in clusters, so if one bursts near you, it's probably (not confirmed) safe to stay there.

Cool drinks, mega juices, potions, mega potions (if you must), plenty of whetstones, it's mostly about patience, i suppose. try to fight in the area that akantor starts off with, that's common sense since there's the largest space to maneuver there, although he burrows to your spawn point occasionally, so you can fight there too to avoid chasing him (or getting chased around)

Hammer:
You will need:
A decent hammer, I won’t tell you what you should have, but if you’ve reached Akantor, then I will assume that you’ll know what a decent hammer is.
High Grade Earplugs; not compulsory but it might save you at times.

Items:
Cool Drink / Cold Meat (Please do not forget this if you don’t have anti-heat skill)
Potions (Mega Potions) x 10
Whetstones
Flashbombs, Flashbugs + Bomb Materials (Optional)
Drugs or Skins (Optional)
Farcasters, Exciteshroom + Bomb Materials (Optional)
Mega or Power Juices (Half Optional Half Necessity)

Right.. Here we go..
First things first, enjoy the entrance video of Akantor, then you come in the picture. Drink your cool drink , and wait for him to come around. Flash him if he’s charging towards you, charge up that hammer, pound his head, roll and charge again to pound his head again, wait for his next move. Don’t run around with your hammer in your hands unless if you know that you will be hitting him.

What to do if he:
Roars + Eruption: have your hammer out (let’s face it, our unsheathing attack is not that great), dodge all the lava spikes, wait till he lands, you can triple pound his head until the last lave spike comes out on the left side of his head. You probably won’t be able to triple pound his head when he’s in rage mode, so you’ll have to make do with a charged pound, so… charge while you’re dodging the lava spikes.

Tail Whip: You’ll know when he’s about to do the tail whip, he’s curved up in this weird little pose and have his tail up high, be underneath his head, have your hammer charged, when the tail is returning, run to the side of his left front paw, and when he shifts to face you, release the charge.

Upward Swing: You’ll also be able to see when he’s about to do this move. Once again, stand on the side next to his paw, have your hammer charged up, and wait till he faces you, release…

Body Slam: Stay clear the length of his body and a bit more because the ground shock will mess up your attack. Once again I think you can fit in a triple pound in there, but if they’re in rage mode, it can be really dangerous to do a triple pound.
So I’d recommend a charge up (What else is new?)

Other Attacks: Use common sense and run around, his body language is very obvious, you can tell what move he’ll do, so you’ll have plenty of time to react to his attacks.

I think we all know about the newly added KO feature that the hammer offers, you’ll have to do about 5-6 of KO sessions where you can get in a free pair of triple pounders each. This is where a chunk of damage you will be inflicting comes from so make the best out of this. Take some powerpills if you reckon you have enough time to fit it in and for fun.

At times you might feel like he’s got you trapped in a corner, this is when you farcaster away, and in the base, make another one by combining the exciteshroom and bomb material. Drink potions if you have to or sharpen your hammer, (you know what I mean) then get back out there and give him more hell.

Have fun.

Wow, this is a really in-depth guide!

Thanks for sharing Apocalyxe. And good luck to those that will attempt to take on Akantor.

Oh, and congrats Renji.
