User ImageThat dream...was haunting her. Last night, as she slept under the stars, she had dreamed about her younger days, being an obedient daughter, earning the proud happy smiles on her parents' faces, her sister...oh, her sister. It didn't help when her eyes snapped open and she stared up at the stars...oh no.

It only drove a painful ache through her heart. Her sister's tail reflected the night sky, and she remembered when Usiku batted her playfully with it. But no, as much as she missed her, she could not go back.

Ever. Waridi'eusi took in another deep breath, halting her steps. She needed to stop for a while, to collect herself together and force the memories out of her mind. It wouldn't do for her to regret something she had done out of her own free will.

It was going to be a dark night tonight; Dole could tell. The stars that were already out in the sky weren't shining as brightly as they usually did. Nor did they seem as twinkly and as cheery as normal. It seemed like...the stars didn't want to shine for some reason. A reason that could perhaps be that the previous day had been so awful, or so terrifying, or so disappointing that the stars wanted nothing to do with this planet, and instead of shining brightly upon them tonight, they shunned the inhabitants with their lack of brightness. It was an odd thing.

So odd that he was looking up as he walked, instead of watching where he was going, and ran smack-dab into something else. This was not how a graceful leopard composed himself; he tried to make up for it with his stumble.

"Forgive me, I was not paying attention," he apologized softly, bowing his head shamefully.

"Ah..." A soft gasp escaped Waridi as the leopard bumped into her and she turned, her eyes regarding the other with shock. His eyes were of the same shade as hers, she noted, as she composed herself. "It's alright." She murmured back.

After all, she couldn't exactly blame him. Her coat was black and it was easy for her to stay unseen in the dark; she had been taught to stay silent in the shadows back then. And if she hadn't been so distracted with her memories, she could have avoided him.

Speaking her thoughts aloud, Dole commented on the dark color of her coat. He had not yet met anyone with the same color as she, and it intrigued him. There were so many different creatures in the world with many different coats.

"It is rather hard to see such a dark, lovely color in the night," he amended with a soft chuckle. "If the moon were brighter, you would probably be able to see me much better. Color works well with light. I'm Dole, by the way. A pleasure to meet you, lady...?" His charm and gentlemanly manners turned on instantly.

"That it does." She agreed with a gentle nod. He seemed like a nice, gentlemanly male, but appearances could be deceiving, she knew. Still, it was nice to have someone to talk to and keep her mind lingering with the memories.

"Waridi'eusi." She finished his sentence.

"A pleasure to meet you, Waridi'eusi," Dole finished, glad to have a name at the end of his greeting. She seemed like a polite, kind lioness. Could be a good conversation.

"May I ask what you are doing out at this time of night, lady?" he began, asking a harmless question.

His question struck her speechless for a while and she remained silent, staring up at the night sky. Yes, she was to be asleep right now.

"I was distracted by the night sky." She finally answered. It was partly true after all.

"Ah, I see." Dole nodded understandably. It was difficult to walk in a straight line, towards your destination, and look above at the stars at the same time. He knew; he had tried it already.

"Tonight is a very beautiful night indeed. I don't blame you for looking at the night sky."

"That it is." She agreed, smiling gently up at the heavens, her eyes fixated on the twinkling stars.

"And you?" She asked, when her gaze turned to him. "What are you doing up and about at this time of the night?"

For a moment, they stared up at the stars together in solitude. The shiny, silver sparkles were beautiful. He often wondered what kind of shapes they made, up there in the sky. And who put them in those specific shapes. Or if not, they were just randomly put together. Which might explain why most other creatures each had different stories and tales to go along with different shapes in the sky.

"Me?" he blinked. "I'm just out and about. I can't really sleep right now for some reason, so I thought I might as well go and look at the stars. See what I can see." He smiled.

For a brief moment, she wondered if he was in the same boat as she was; too distracted by thoughts, or awoken by a nightmare and preferred to stay awake instead.

"I see." She answered simply and lapsed into silence. Waridi'eusi wasn't one to make conversation, and moreover, she was at a loss of how to start one. It really didn't help that she was distracted by the stars.

Dole's smile remained on his face as he stargazed for a moment. And then his neck cracked, and he let out a groan. This was hurting his bones, looking up for such a long time and at this angle. He eyed the grasse beneath him before flopping down and rolling onto his back.

"This is much more comfortable. And you can see a lot of the stars and not have to turn your head so much." He patted the spot next to him in an invitation to her.

She turned at the sudden noise, slightly startled out of the peace she had been enjoying. Waridi smiled as she watched him decide that lying down would be a better position to stargaze.

She contemplated his invitation for a moment before accepting it. He seemed like a nice male...and, she thought with a yawn, it would be alright to let down her guard for a while. "That it is." She agreed. "I hope...I don't fall asleep though."

Dole laughed.

"I hope I don't fall asleep either, although I'm beginning to think that I should get going. So should you; if I'm tired, I know you are." He turned his head and smiled kindly at her. "It was nice talking with you, and watching the stars with you." He got up slowly, shaking a few blades of grass from his coat. "Good night." The leopard gave a final smile and trotted off to find a tree to sleep in.

She nodded, though she herself knew she wouldn't be going to sleep any time soon, if she could do anything about it.

"Same here." She got up to rest on her hind legs and nodded at him in return. The lioness watched the other pad away, while she herself forced her drooping eyelids open and once again stared up at the sky.

This was going to be a long night.
