Not more than a month after the release of Need For Speed: Undercover, the Electric Playground is reporting that Electronic Arts may be cutting the franchise entirely. The videogame web show claims that future titles in the series have been canceled. EA director of communications Colin Macrae provided Electric Playground with the following comment:
"We're working through a process on people, products, and facilities at EA and don't have any announcements today."
Undercover, the most recent entry in the long-running franchise, was received fairly well but didn't crack the top 20 in the NPD sales charts for the month of November.

Need For Speed? Cut Part 2
Joystiq reports that the recent rumor about EA cutting NFS series may not be true after all, but instead EA will shut down Blackbox, the studio that has been developing NFS games since Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 for PlayStation2, and that one of the next games in the series will be developed by Criterion, the developer behind Burnout games. Additionally the three teams currently developing NFS games will be joined into one and drastically downsized leading into less NFS releases.
Now all this has not been confirmed by EA, but we can expect an official response this week.
We recently reported possible cancellation of the Need For Speed Series and later on about closing NFS development studio Blackbox. EA issued a press conference about reducing it's work force by 10% (about 1000 employees) and the closure of several studios, including the NFS series maker Blackbox which will be merged with the nearby EA Canada studio. The press statement does not mention any games being canceled which means the production of NFS10 will most likely continue.
