so i'm a sophomore, i've been playing french horn for about 4 years, and i'm comparing the music i've been playing to music i played in ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. in 6th grade. when i first started playing.
i've tried telling my band director that my music is too easy.
i played harder pieces in junior high. i want to quit, but i love playing my instrument, and there's no other bands that i could join in my area without devoting at least 2 hours a day to. AFTER school. i have too much to do. i've suggested songs that i enjoyed playing, i've suggested songs that even the dumb-4$$ freshman who've barely been playing 2 years or so and can't play at all(our school is too small to have 2 bands, even though the middle school-which is the same size as the high school- has 2 or 3)
i've even passed EVER SINGLE PLAYING TEST with an A.
except for 1. i hate D.

and what makes it worse is that she's a new teacher. she's only been teaching a few years(less time than i''ve been playing actually) and she's a good conductor(great in fact) but a horrible teacher. and my counselor has already told me that i can't really do anything about it.
1 step at a time. right now i'm working on getting our marching and concert band separated.

i miss having something i have to work at to get besides pitches. i want some kind of challenge. please give advice?

just straightup tell him exactly how you feel!

last year my band director gave us our show music for marching band is it was hairspray, RENT, and wicked stuff
it was really easy and for like... a beginner band

so we all just went to him and told him it was way too easy, and he changed it to something difficult!

The direct approach is best! Maybe not as direct as I would be with my conductor, I tend to just yell "this is piss easy give us something different!" But be direct and specific about why you object to the music.

If that doesn't work, then play it and prove that its too easy for you. For that method to work though, the entire band really has to play it perfectly first time through.

I encountered a somewhat similar problem. My school's band program sucked. Royally. My director had been teaching for a little over ten years, but this was supposedly the worst program he had ever taught. It wasn't his fault, so much as it was the student's. Noone practiced, and they were in freaking Ninth grade, playing level two and three music. It was sad really.

I quit, and applied for my 'All county Band'. I'm not saying that this is what you should do, but it's a wonderfully fruitful alternative if you eventually get completly and totally fed up with your school's band program.

As x-mas said, you should be direct with your director, but it really does depend on your band's overall skill level first.

I have almost the same situation. My orchestra is incompetent, that's how my BD sees it. IDK how to tell him to give us harder music!

I know what you mean.

I'm first chair in the lowest band but the music is pathetically easy T.T

I would ask for harder music but that would be asking way too much from our low brass section

Telling your BD is probably the best bet. During mband season, everyone kept talking about how they hated the show he created and how this season would suck. Well, eventually he heard it, held a band meeting, talked to us about it, and we all felt really bad. So yeah, just talk to her about it before it bites you in the butt. Maybe tell her gently if you feel the need, something like "Hey, this music is great and fun, but do you think we could get something a bit more challenging?"

I tried to tell my band director about that when i had that problem too!

Then I learned a very important lesson:

The band director is always right.

I also had to stay behind and help clean up the sheet music room.

>.<

I hope your problem works out though!

Thing is. That might not always work. My BD just gets angry at any student that challenges him. SOOOO....you might have to wait until you switch schools/into a new band. Or make it to honor's band or something and show him it's too easy.

Go up to him and be like, this music, HAS BEEN MASTERED and hand it back. biggrin

or just ask them a specific thing you want to play as a suggestion

Petition works too ^^

Same thing is happening to the band I'm currently in. Our band is really bad compared to last year's band though... Our trumpets suck. They hold back the entire band, so now we have to play really easy music. I told our BD that the band would be able to handle harder music, so he gives music which features certain sections of the band. For now we only have two pieces that feature a section and that is "Flight of the Flutes" [which features the flutes obviously], and "Typewriter" [which features the first chair clarinets, pretty much]. What I really hate about the trumpets is that most of them are going to quit band next year, and pretty much all of them hate it!! I mean, why become a detriment to the rest of the band when they aren't even going to continue next year? I think what they are doing is waste of time. It really creases me that they aren't even doing even a little extra practice to get even a little bit better.

I complain and say how
there is only -such and such-
of notes. And how many there
SHOULD be.
And how I only play
a certain amount of time.

Or sometimes I just complain.

my situation is alot like yours except my teacher hass beenteaching for a long time. also she plays the ezest songs realy slow she doesnt even have us play close to 80 or 90 on the metranome, and their r at least 4 of us who wish she would go faster and when she does everyone elde in the class cant keep up. and all 4 of us have tried to get her to pick harder songs that we can do faster. last year we were lucky and she did it was Duel of the Fates from Star Wars and it sounded realy cool but she said we wernt going to be fast enough for it which i dont understand because i thought we could go faster but most of the class couldnt ( but i shouldnt say that cuz i was in the back of the class playing with realy big instruments so i couldnt hear as well) but still we could have tryed harder. and that is the only thing wrong when you get what u want is the other people who cant play as well as you think they could play stressed

I was in about the same situation except he just decided to move me to the higher band, Say that you would like some challenging music, something you can work on and perfect. It worked great for me, Now I am playing grade 6 in an awesome band and loving it!!!
