Dole once again found himself laying in one of the most comfortable spots he had ever discovered: lounging on a tree branch. That's what leopards do, of course, but he especially loved the ability of tree-climbing. He often met other creatures this way, including fellow leopards and lions and all kinds of other species.

Today, however, was a boring, dreary day. It had rained on and off all morning; right now the entire bottom half of his tree was surrounded in a fine mist. His fur was sticking up every-which-way from the humidity, which did not make him happy in the slightest.

He gave a sigh and began licking his paws again, hoping to smooth himself down for the billionth time that day.

Young Hyun was moderately displeased by the wet weather, but upon Unguzo's orders, she had been forced to leave her den of a cave and venture out into it. Her tan fur was plastered to her body, and her feet stained green and brown from the vegetation that sprung up from the rain only to be crushed under her paws. A frown was also stuck to her face as she cursed the low visibility on the plains before her, wondering just why the life-giving elixir of rain had such unpleasant side-effects.

She shook audibly to free some water from her fur, and decided to place herself beneath the canopy of a tree, briefly hoping for a moment that its base would prove to be drier than the rest of the ground as she waited for the sun to rid the land of mist. But that too was soggy, and she relegated herself to lying beneath it, now with a dirty stomach, to wait it out, presumably alone.

The sound of faint pawprints made Dole p***k his ears to listen closely; he heard the shaking of a body, and then more steps, and then finally a body stopping. What they did next he did not know until he glanced down.

For there, at the base of his tree, was a young female. She looked rather sulky (although he would be too, if he had to walk around in this weather) and had stained paws from the wet grasses she had passed through. His head tilted to one side in sympathy.

"If you could climb up this tree, I would invite you up. It's a much better spot than down there in the mist," he called down softly, so as not to disturb her too much.

The breath that was to be a sigh caught in her throat, and Hyun's head whipped to face the figure draped on the branch above her head. Through her surprise, she managed to be disappointed in herself, at having missed the massive and very blue leopard. Her ears flicked back and her eyebrows furrowed as she strained to watch him.

"Well, that's a nice thought, sir, and I regret that I can't join you." Her voice was at its normal pitch, though it disguised a tenseness that hid beneath her fur as she rose to her feet.

Dole chuckled and cocked his head to one side. "Would you mind the company down there, then, if it cannot be up here?" She seemed friendly enough; he wasn't one to over-read another's expression or body language to a more explicable point.

If he did, he would probably learn a lot. But he didn't. So he was kept in the dark about a lot of things.

"I am Dole, it's nice to meet you, although the weather does not feel like agreeing with me."

Even through the mist, Hyun put on a polite smile, "And its nice to meet you, Dole. I'm Hyundur'ton, but I prefer 'Hyun', much easier, hmm?" She took a few steps back to allow Dole room to come down from his perch, and as she did, she felt herself relax a little. Not ever encounter had to turn bloody or violent, so she nodded, however unseen it was through the mist.

"I wouldn't mind that at all, although you're bound to end up just as dirty as me. And I used to think of the rains as a cleaning force." She chuckled slightly, trying to make herself feel comfortable along with Dole.

"Yes, a lot easier. I suppose I'm lucky that mine is so much shorter than that, although yours sounds so much more elegant in its longer version," Dole agreed, gracefully bounded down from his perch in the tree and landed on the ground below, right in front of Hyun.

"Well, we're all bound to end up dirty one way or another. I'm sure we can find a nice stream or river somewhere to wash ourselves when the mist dissipates. Or even beforehand." He grimaced at the color his paws were already starting to show: greens and browns on his beautiful blue coat.

Hyun was slightly taken aback by his compliment. It was the first compliment anyone had paid to her name, a far better change from "little bug". Nervously, she cleared her throat. She looked away for a moment, her red eyes not on the blue pelt, moving from the distant mist to the mud on her paws, to again, his.

"Well personally, I'd prefer it to be after the mist is gone, lest we enter a cycle of dirt and grime." The lioness smiled, however tentatively, and shrugged a little to accompany it.

Dole sighed and sat, nodding. "That's true. I guess I hadn't thought of that. Although if we stayed near the stream, it wouldn't be that hard to continue such a cycle. Though it would become bothersome, and get tiring rather quickly."

He shook his head and inwardly kicked himself for doing something so stupid. Almost instantly his neck and head and upper back/shoulder fur floofed out into a poofball-like shape. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath before he began to freak out or something.

"I. Hate. Humidity."

Nodding at his words, the lioness was the face of seriousness.... Until she watched his blue fur leave its host and she couldn't reign back the laugh at his silly appearance. But she was quick to check it, and sat back, covering her smile with her paw as she waited to see if he would remedy his problem or if more fur would follow suit.

Her shoulders still shook a little as she watched and cleared her throat, "Uh, oh, I'm sorry I laughed at you... But..." She trailed off, confident he too knew just how silly he looked. She sat their nervously and slightly tense at this rare [what she considered to be] outburst of emotion, and waved her tail through the grass, muddying it further.

Her laugh kind of grated on his ears; he didn't really need a verbal reminder that he looked disgusting. The knowledge of self-awareness was enough, really. But he smiled tightly and tried to smooth it back into place with his tongue, in all the places he could possibly reach.

"Yes, I'm glad you recognize how silly I look. I imagine I resemble a poof-ball cub of some sort who's just has his first bath by Mommy." Indeed, the image of a cub with a puffy mane sprang into his mind. He noticed her tail wiggling. "You're just getting that more dirty, you know," he pointed out with a smirk. A thought had just occurred to him.

"If you needed help becoming even more muddy, all you had to do was ask." And he scooped up a paw full of mud and dirt and grime and calmly deposited it on her back, where it was still a pretty tan color.

Hyun gawked up at him as mud splorked onto her back and squelched as it slid down her fur, ingraining it with whatever grime had found its way into the mud. Her red eyes were almost sad as she looked up, and she had to check them to make sure she didn't explode into fury. But for some reason, it was easy around Dole, and instead, she simply felt the urge for some friendly pay back.

But being of the lioness persuasion, that would not be easy. She raised her rump into the air, digging her forepaws into the mud until it sucked against her paws and she shoveled it at him like a bulldozer. Her legs popped free and mud was flung at his face, she chuckled and grinned as his blue became brown, and she went in to dig out more, turning around and pushing it through her back feet like a wild dog.

He had to blink once and had just enough time to shut his eyes before the onslaught of mud that turned his pretty coat into a rather muddy one. It was driven at him with amazing force; he had wondered how powerful the wild dogs' forepaws were, when he had seen them digging like this.

"Oh, that was low," Dole told her, and squelched through the mud to dodge future attacks. His paws grasped as much mud as he could and pelted the small pawfuls at her, one by one.

This assault was turning into too much for Hyun, she was caked with mud from head to toe and back and tail, her tan coat a dark brown, and she was beginning to look more like a swamp monster than a lioness. She ducked and dodged instead of fighting back, but with one final scoop of mud in Dole's direction, she used the motion of digging as a starting block to begin jogging away from their battle field. She shook her coat out as she loped, and looked over her shoulder at the equally mussed leopard. "Truce! I'm going to clean off," she called over her shoulder.

"I guess I'll see you around, Dole, and when this truce is off, I'm sure I'll win." Her true farewell was under her breath as Hyun broke into a sprint away from the muddy grounds, and from her new friend. As she continued on, she laughed, but the mud caked on her snout made her grimace.

Dole laughed and trotted after her. "Agreed. I feel disgusting." Much like her, his blue coat was completely covered with dark brown goo. He could feel the mud squishing as he walked.

"See you around; it was nice meeting you. Thanks for the mud fight," he laughed and yelled after her. He shook his head and smiled as he left in the opposite direction.
