Tomatoes and Radio Wire http://www.myspace.com/discothequedragons------ it's my cover of Mr. Mangum's Two Headed Boy. although mine is a little less faithful reproduction given it's lowfi qualities. I'm making a demo tape (yes as in cassette!!!) and plan to include it on there. I have no interest in record deals, the demo is merely to show friends when they want to know what I sound like. tell me what you think of it, I hope I remained true to the feel of Mangum's work as a whole (I tried to) first couple notes from the vocals sound really weird. perhaps I should 've sang through the entire song first

Lolneutralmilkhotel.
Popular indie band or most popular indie band EVER while still retaining 'indie' status? You be the judge.
I suppose, since you're just getting on the scene, this makes you underground indie (undie lololololol).

hey, I like it. I'm not a huge fan of the "Indie" bullshit, it's almost as bad as calling yourself emo. It's funny that music that's been made for years just recently gets attention, and now white stripes frranz ferdinand and the strokes are all indie rock.
I'm not an indie kid. But I like NMH. I suppose it is rather popular, but not as much as Elliott Smith, Did he ever call himself indie?

Oh, hell yeah. Indie FANS make me want to eviscerate cute little mammals. They're pretty much all about who knew about who first. I find that some indie music, however, is REALLY good, which is why I usually lurk indie-oriented areas in order to surf for music. You've also got the really BAD indie music, too.
I'm also into strange s**t, like deerhoof, just because it's interesting for a listen or two before you go back to the stuff that really gets your blood pumping, plus it's neat to see bands who give so little a damn what other's think of them that they'll sing about Pandas.
NMH's Aeroplane album has a lot of semen in it. It makes me giggle. As for Elliot Smith... I doubt it.
Also, those three bands are in a different league than the vast majority of modern music. When we get a name for their genres (after people copy them enough *cough* *cough*) they'll have a classification, but indie is where record companies put s**t that they're too lazy or too afraid to put a tag on.

I'm going to have to agree. bands like deerhoof, XbXrX, and Melt Banana are always cool like that. and you know they all list devo as one of their influences. I guess they really were ahead of their time.
anywho, it's especially annoying when the whole hipster element comes into play with indie music. that idea: "I heard this band first, therefore your interest in them is belittled as I am the true educated music fan" I think those bands (franz ferdinand/hives and such) have more in common with garage rock than what's being called indie music (tegan and sarah, the shins and such) and really it's nothing new. garage rock has been around longer than Iggy Pop. the only difference is that FF uses dancey beats and bass composition, Strokes use cleaner guitars and a stricter beat.
I don't know. Mangum is more of a folk rock guy to me. I mean it was the 90s so the usage of enormous distortion was pretty common, but Neutral Milk Hotel was more about the collective instruments playing against each other.

Yeah, I think Franz Ferdinand takes a lot of influence from Iggy Pop and the Talking Heads, with some of that old-school pop-y feel thrown in for good measure (maybe some Prince?)
And yeah, most of Mangum's stuff is heavy on the unaccompanied acoustic guitar and what I think might happen to Bob Dylan if you gave him four hits of LSD or so. I'd definitely label him folk, but, again, he's in league with the indie guys.
Which, really, isn't so bad if you discount those ******** fans.

alex kapranos is definitely a prince fan. It's obvious, you can tell by his presence near a camera.
actually, I find Bob Dylan to be much more abstract. So supposedly Mangum is childhood friends with the singer from the apples in stereo. hm. Although I plan to move there in the near/distant future, Portland is probably one of the most indie grossing cities in the nation.

That and Chapel Hill, North Carolina, for sure. I toyed with the idea of moving to Portland or Chapel Hill for a while, but I decided recently that I'd mooch off of my father for JUST a little longer while I became omniscient in everything that had anything to do with my instrument.

that's wise. We're selling my recently deceased grandmother's house and will be buying an upright piano with a bit of the money. of course I'll most likely be without a real one when I move out. I write better songs when it comes from piano, and I just can't stand the sound of the digital piano... bleh.. I really want to become more multi-fastened, I'm not so much focusing on guitar, just songwriting in general.

I hear that. I'll be taking keyboarding classes next semester, and hoping to God that my cheap Casio doesn't make me go on a baby-punching spree. I've also recently "acquired" (read: pirate d)a copy of Guitar Pro 5, which I'm just learning how to use. That RSE is kind of nice, actually. Definitely better than the best of MIDI quality that I've heard, anyway.

oh I wasn't aware GP5 had a MIDI control interface.
I really should get a MIDI cable already, then pirate some software and get over that undesirable tone... but the feel of the keys to the strings is a huge part of it too. even the top of the line digital pianos don't feel quite like the real thing

Yeah, they lack the middle-ground things you do for inflection, too. You can get your average dynamics and something like stacatto, but nothing like the real deal.
