User ImageLittle Nikolai huffed as he waded through the nose-deep snow that had fallen the day before. It had certainly looked enchanting the previous evening, drifting to the ground in the fading light like the clouds themselves were coming to pieces. But he didn't imagine it would be so shiny in the sunlight!

The morning light sparkled off the thick blanket of white before him, occasionally stirred into a glittering mist by the light breeze that gusted across the field, and it hurt Nikolai's baby eyes in spite of his fascination. Every time the wind rose he would stop and squint, peering over the surface of the snow with a longing to have that much shininess in a tangible object he could touch and toy with. Oh, but it made his head hurt~

The little fawn huffed again in irritation. Trying to wander around in the snow made his legs feel all weak and wobbly, so he gave up on travel and burrowed into the snow at the end of his zigzagging trail. It was comfy enough, the relative darkness soothing to his eyes, so he curled up in a little ball for a nap. He would continue moving through the shiny snow later.

Plowing determinedly through the fluffy, if cold layer of snow that had fallen the night before, Atreyu made a face--he half dreaded getting home, and having to untangle the sodden cold mass of gold hair that even now felt like it was weighing him down, inviting him to become firmly enmeshed in the stubborn strands.

Wrinkling his nose, Atreyu puffed out his chest, forging onwards, hesitating only to reach up with one delicate paw to pull hair from in front of his eyes. The snow was so bright...and while certainly beautiful, he knew from experience that the bright sun above meant that he needed to avoid being out in it too long--the last time he'd played out in the snow for too long, he'd found that the harsh reflected light had left his world faded and washed out for hours afterwards.

Spotting another set of tracks crossing his own, Atreyu's ears pricked with interest. Surely he had time to see where they led, right? Zig-zagging haphazardly along the trail, and minding his paws, so that he didn't trip, Atreyu was so intent on his own footwork that he flat-out tripped over the infant kyun, whp was invisible under a patch of untouched snow.

Yelping, Atreyu went down -hard-, although the tumble was, mercifully, cushioned by a thick layer of snow.

Nikolai's big red eyes went wide as he was roused from his nap, by a force that was strong enough to knock him right over onto his opposite side in his snowy hole. He poked his face out of the snow, fearfully glancing back at his tracks and seeing nothing in the way of his assailant. But it was out there, somewhere in the shiny whiteness, he could see the larger footprints fresh against his own snowploughed trail...

The baby kyunru slowly turned around in a circle, tramping down the snow around him as he shuffled around and then cowered in fright at the terrifying (if shiny) monster before him. It's face was a mass of hair, long and silky and shining in the sunlight, two grotesquely bent limbs shifting below it. Small wings flapped behind the hair, and Nikolai's own little wings trembled against his back.

His wide eyes teared up, he had no way of knowing the monster in front of him was simply the behind of a bigger kyunru.

Slowly getting to his feet, Atreyu shook himself off, turning around to see just what he'd tripped over--he hadn't even seen a lump in the snow! As he turned, one of his forepaws slipped in the newly-packed snow, bringing him to his knees. He was, however, turned around far enough to see his 'obstacle'. His face was still dusted with snow, the delicate flakes clinging to his chin, the tip of his nose, and his cheeks, in particular.

Taking in the appearance of the younger fawn, Atreyu smiled, the expression only falling slightly as he took note of the large, teary eyes. Surely he hadn't hurt the little one, had he?!

"You're not hurt, are you?" Scrambling inelegantly to his feet once again, he took a step towards Nikolai, expression shifting rapidly to concern.

A clumsy, two-headed monster! Nikolai's big eyes welled up with more tears and he gave the tiniest little sniffle, now that he had been discovered he would be eaten for sure... But as the monster finally scrambled to a more natural position it looked less like a monster, and more like himself with longer legs. And longer hair. And a funny, shiny horn right in the middle of his head rather than one on each side to keep his head balanced. Maybe that's why he had been tottering around all scary-like.

The little fawn slid down onto his belly with a flop and settled his head between his paws, watching the older Kyunru approach. It would be hard to tell if the slow shake of his head was indeed a 'no, I'm not hurt' or just the action of rubbing his sniffling nose on his soft paws. Maybe it was a bit of both, he didn't feel hurt. Was he supposed to be hurt?

As little ones were often prone to doing, Nikolai used that concern to convince himself he must be hurt and those big, ruby eyes teared up again.

Looking half-panicked, Atreyu took a step back himself, looking from side to side, as if he half-expected someone to step out from underneath a snowbank and tell him how he was supposed to handle the teary-eyed infant who lay in the snow before him.

"I...I'm really sorry if I hurt you...I didn't even know you were there!" he started, shifting his weight uncomfortably from forepaw to forepaw.

"Where does it hurt?" Leaning in a bit closer, he looked the fawn over, as if trying to reassure himself that there were at least no obvious, glaring injuries.

Nikolai glanced around too, mimicking the bigger kyunru with a more thorough inspection of the surrounding area. He had forgotten how shiny the snow was, and was distracted by it's dazzling brightness even before blinking the tears from his eyes. It was so pretty~

The little fawn's attention to his current situation quickly returned when the older one leaned towards him. Hurt? He had been hurt! But where? Nikolai realized his eyes hurt from staring at the bright snow, and wow, that kyunru had a really shiny horn. He wiggled a bit to get a better look at it, and ended up unintentionally presenting the side of his body that had been tripped over.

Intent on rectifying the harm he'd caused, Atreyu completely missed the young fawn's fascination with his horn. "It hurts there?" Perhaps some snow would help? He debated, looking from the soft, fluffy white snow to the fawn.

Lowering his head, atreyu sniffed at it cautiously. "I'm realllly sorry...is there anything I can do?" he was completely out of his element--he usually did the saving, not the harming!

The big red eyes went wide again, but this time Nikolai's mouth turned up into an eager and delighted smile as the object of his fascination drew near. Closer, closer... Then with a happy giggle and a rapid, vibrating tail wag, the little kyunru thrust his paws out to touch the older one's horn. All his woes were forgotten next to the pleasure of playing with such a shiny object.

Caught off-guard, Atreyu jerked his head back, stepping on a golden strand of hair as he tried to back up--was the little one attacking him as revenge?!

Wincing, the teen kyun's expression eased as he noticed the source of the fixation. "Pretty shiney, huh?" he asked tentatively, slowly lowering his head again, smiling ever-so-slightly.

"What's your name?" He asked conversationally, wondering why Nikolai was laying alone out in the middle of nowhere.

"Mmhmm..." The little kyunru batted the horn now once again within his reach, and then rolled onto his back to play with all four feet. "Niko," he replied, his little back hooves clicking against the big kyunru's horn as he gave it an experimental push. Maybe it would go back to it's normal place, on the side of the kyunru's head. Or not.

Making a face as the hooves clicked sharply against his horn, Atreyu shook his head, as if to clear it. "Are you lost, Niko?" He asked a moment later, lifting his head (and more importantly, the horn) playfully out of reach. "Where's your family?"

It didn't even really occur to him that the other kyun might not know.

Nikolai, still within grasping range of his new friend's horn, was dragged back and forth slightly, to no ill effect. When the horn teasingly moved out of reach, he clutched it as long as possible. The distance did seem to help his concentration somewhat.

"Um, I'm not lost." Nikolai glanced at the other kyunru's face, before fixating back on the horn. Then he rolled back over and sat up properly. "I dunno," was his innocent, yet unhelpful reply to the second question. Even more unhelpfully, he glanced back up at the horn. "Can I have that?"

Atreyu laughed as Nikolai finally let go of his horn, before turning somewhat more serious, again. "Not lost...are you from around here, then?" At the next question, however, Atreyu blinked, unsure of quite how to reply. "It's attached to my face...and what would you do with another horn, anyway?" he teased, bobbing his head.

"I would play with it!" Nikolai insisted enthusiastically, his big red eyes practically glittering with delight at the thought. His tail did another one of those vibrating wags, sweeping the snow under it into a single-limbed snow angel. "Why did you get it attached crooked? And where is your other one?"
