A cheerful tune filled the crisp winter air as the curly headed mare made her way through the snow covered fields. Her dark wings flopped a little bit with every step but she didn't mind the movement. She rather enjoyed it, in fact, as the movement warmed her sides quite nicely. It was a lovely day, bright out and scarcely a cloud in the sky, but it was quite chilly.

She slowed her pace and her song slowly trailed off. With a little smile she turned her gaze skyward half expecting to see her mother or grandfather heading her way. She couldn't see either of them but staring up at the bright sky was making her eyes water so it was hard to see much of anything. Squinting her eyes to see didn't seem to be helping either so she lowered her head. She blinked a few times to clear her vision but found herself looking back into bright blue only a few moments later.

She didn't know why she expected to see them. Malta wasn't a little kid anymore and they were probably busy. It seemed everyone was always busy with something these days. She sighed and let her eyes drift back to the snowy ground. After a moment she shrugged her wings and smiled. "Oh well, more snow for me." She said returning to trotting threw the snow. It didn't make much sense to waste a whole day hoping that someone would come. That was just silly. Besides, it was rather cold standing still.

Ah, the shifting seasons were not something to study but something to enjoy. The Uni-Angeni was more than content to wade through the snow, lowering his head now and then to inspect protruding grass strands that lurked here and there. As with all season the changes had been gradual and then on one specified day the spirits had decided that it was time to finalise their decision. There had been no snow the previous day and yet when he had opened his pale eyes this morning he had been greeted by mist before his eyes and snow beneath his hooves - it was a pleasant surprise and one he had expressed gratitude for in his own way.

Nevertheless as was common for the stallion, he wasn't inclined towards remaining still upon waking up. Instead he pulled himself to his hooves and had gathered his composure. His leaf flute snuggly tucked into his wings by his side, he had then proceeded out into the open. As was to be expected the world was quiet with many individuals testily examining the snow before opting to stay in warmer climates whether they be a cave, village or forest. It was one of the few days in which Zhu had anticipated that he would see no one else.

Alas the spirits had opted to prove him wrong.

No sooner had his hooves touched the snow than his ears swivelled at the sound of song upon the wind. It wasn't tuneless, but it had no definite lyric to it either. He wasn't sure if it had been made up but with his interest peaked he began to drifted in the direction he had heard it...until it ceased and he tilted his head to the side. Pink lockes of hair tumbling across his pale eyes as he inspected the horizon, though for the most part he couldn't see a thing.

"A nymph," he pondered quietly, continuing to drift his gaze across the horizon.

After a few more moments of aimless wandering through the snow she ceased her movement once again and turned her head to peer behind her. Her eyes sparkled to see that she was leaving long lines of tracks behind her. It gave her a wonderful idea. Alone or not she was determined to enjoy this day no matter what. It was the only time she'd get to have this day after all.

Tilting her head slightly to the side she took in the empty blanket of snow and let her mind chart a course. Not a second later she turned around and headed off at an angle from her already made path. She stepped slowly keeping her head down to be sure that her hooves were falling where she wanted them to. Walking in this way she slowly made her way over a rather small section of the snowy canvas. She walked in arcs and lines carving out a path in the snow.

As she reached her starting point once again she looked out hoping to see her beautiful work looking back at her. She frowned as she realized she couldn't actually see anything. At least not from where she was standing.

She took a few steps backwards making sure she wasn't making any new lines before spreading her dark wings. She beat them a few times before getting the lift she needed to push her into the air. A triumphant laugh escaped her as she looked down to the ground. Her drawing was beautiful! A bit lopsided maybe but when she tilted her head the right way it was easy to see the butterfly smiling up at her.

It was the same old story, instances where he would hear song and whisper alike only to be informed that it was fleeting. He smiled softly at such a revelation and opted to continue pacing forward through the snow. Unaware of the true bite of winter due to the cloth around his body, he proceeded with ease through the white 'dust'. Fluffy hooves waded through the meadow, a meadow that seemed to glow as the sun began to look down upon it in both admiration and disapproval. It was a strange relationship that the sun and the snow had, some days the snow would be permitted to stay and others it would be chased away in favour of more soggy grounds... Zhu could only wonder as to which this afternoon would be.

Nevertheless, with his gaze firmly fixed on the horizon as he walked he was finding it increasingly difficult to see. Thus he opted to close his eyes and permitted his hooves, nose and ears to direct him to wherever they chose. Shuffle, crackle, crunch - such sounds appeared all the more musical when no other sense was invaded and as such a small smile of appreciation deepened upon his delicate lips as he proceeded forward.

Admittedly the pale pink stallion would eventually have to seek out food and drink for breakfast, but for the time being he was more than content to move forward in this manner. A morning serenade from nature itself as well as nymphs was not something the Uni-Angeni could reject. On the contrary he deeply enjoyed it and would not be disturbed. However what he did remain unaware of was the fact that he was heading towards said 'nymph' at a rather fast rate.

...What a surprise it would be for him to discover that his nymph was actually another soquili!

Lazily she glided about circling her drawing as though she were trying to find an angle where it looked more like a butterfly and less like a gathering of toadstools without tilting her head. As a familiar lightheaded feeling washed over her Malta began to realize that there was no hope in finding such a position. She sighed and shook her head. "Oh well, people will just have to turn their heads." She said with a giggle. The feeling was beginning to mess with her mind.

It was time to rejoin her butterfly on the ground. She looped around her drawing once more though this time she watched the horizons to find a new canvas to play on. While she found several such places she also noted that there was something heading her way. Her jaw dropped in surprise, she had been so sure she was the only one out there. She kept her gaze trained on him and found that she was paying no attention to her descent.

That was of course until she found her hooves connecting with the ground accompanied by a puff of white snow. She blinked a few times and looked down. It was a few moments before she realized exactly where she was standing. "AH! My butterfly!!!" She cried staring down in mild horror at the no longer smiling face of her artwork. "I've killed it..." For the moment the other out here was forgotten.

He had lacked an awareness of this nymph being in his immediate vicinity, but she provided proof of her existence albeit abruptly as she came to land and shrieked. His ears swivelled, peeked with interest and his gaze lifted to the horizon. No sooner had he done this than he was greeted with a very distraught, purple mare. His head tilted to the side and he continued his approach - picking up on her 'confession' and obvious guilt in the process. She seemed truly upset that she had caused harm and yet he was aware that her 'butterflies' were nothing more than a snow pattern without the power of imagination behind them.

"Death is only the beginning on one's journey, you should not feel such grief for granting your butterfly a new adventure," he offered with a soft smile. He was not one for introductions in the traditional sense, a 'hello' or any other indication of greeting was not often found upon his lips. He was an individual who introduced himself in other ways, others were aware of him without him having to utter a word for the most part. Attracted to his music, they were often the ones who would gasp and enquire though even then...it was always with questions as opposed to the traditional hello.

Ah...he was always one to encourage those around him to embrace less traditional approaches.

"However, with a little tender care..." He drew closer still and came to a halt. It was then that he inspected the somewhat distorted face and tenderly began to redraw it with his forehoof. It wasn't the tidiest of recoveries but it slowly began to provide a wobbly smile. "They sometimes choose to stay in this world for a little longer..."

"You are very good at this, nyah?" He offered, his head tilting to one side.

She jumped slightly with a start as the voice reminded her that she was not alone. She lifted her head quickly and found the voice's owner. She stared at him for a moment not quite sure what to say to him. He said that death was the beginning when she had been pretty sure it was the end. It struck her as a little strange but perhaps odder yet was he told her not to feel 'grief' over it. "But...I killed it...even if it's a start...I still hurt it t'give it that you know..."

She made an attempt to smile at him in greeting as he grew closer still but found herself still rather upset over the drawing. Her mother and grandfather would say she was being silly but she couldn't help but feel bad. She had created it only to take it out a brief moment later. It was so young. It never even stood a chance.

Her eyes drifted down to the drawing as he spoke again. She watched somewhat delighted as he began to re-do the face. She laughed seeing the wobbly smile take form. "He saw a ghost." She offered with a genuine smile. It was really quite amazing the change a new face to bring to a previously dying drawing and to it's creator.

After looking it over a few more times she decided it was probably best to relocate herself from off it's body. She pushed herself off the ground and spread her wings to glide to the edge of the butterfly before landing a bit awkwardly. She followed the edge of her drawing back to the strange stranger who had resurrected her art. "Well...I wouldn't say I'm that good...yet...but I'm getting better." She replied cheerfully. "Thank you for helping it. I didn't want to see it die in such a...horribly squished way."

He didn't expect any other creature to complete understand or to follow his train of thought. That was simply unreasonable and too far fetched. The most Zhu had ever aspired to do was speak and patiently await the moment when they deciphered and dissected his words. The meaning they took from them wasn't always the one he had intended but it was not his place to correct them. Perception and interpretation were all part of life and so long as his words brought comfort to the creature in question then he had done his part. While she felt guilt over the destruction of her butterfly, and while he knew that it was merely a drawing, he was an individual who would encourage such an imagination rather than stifle it. The spirits knew that there were plenty of realists in the world and he was not one of those.

After all, there was a fine line between what was real and what was illusion. The living were very good at painting pretty pictures and hiding beneath veils of half truths, so if she wanted to believe her picture had been granted life then he wouldn't stop her. On the contrary, he would grieve with her for its loss and it's pain because imagination really was such a powerful thing and to have such innocence at this stage in life was a very special thing indeed!

"I would say," he began after a few moments of quiet consideration. "That your anguish is enough for him to forgive you, you did not mean to hurt him and he understands this," he nodded and was satisfied with his own remarks. Tilting his head, he encouraged the strands of rose hair to drift away from his eyes and he provided a smile of his own as her expression lifted and became more content. The simplest of gestures was often the most powerful, few understood this but he knew it all too well...

"Though methinks he will have quite the tale to tell his friends now, especially if he has seen a ghost!" He chuckled, ensuring he remained an ample distance from the butterfly as he moved around it to inspect it from various angles. At certain angles the wobbly face looked utterly ridiculous but he was content with his art...he didn't profess to being picasso anyway. "But you are most welcome for the aid, even if it was more your doing than mine," he finished with a smile, ruffling his wings closely to his sides as he turned to the mare again.

"You suit a smile better than a frown - and a smile is so much healthier anyway."

In the silence she took the time to get a good look at him. Now that her butterfly was alive and, well spooked, but well she saw no harm in taking in the detail of the other. She wanted to know exactly who she's was speaking to after all. The first thing that caught her attention was the color of his hair, it reminded her greatly of her mother's. Her head began to tilt to the side as she marveled over it. She was talking to a boy wasn't she?

She did not have long to think about it as he began to speak. Her head snapped back to attention to listen. "You think so...?" She asked her voice trailing off as her eyes drifted back to the ground to look at the goofy butterfly. A smile came to her face but it could not decide if it wanted to be happy or sad.

"Yeah he will." Her face settled on an emotion, happiness. Her butterfly would have quite the tale to tell. Her head lifted as he returned and she laughed. "I've never heard that before, a smile being healthier." It was silly to her. She couldn't imagine an expression being better for her health then any other it truly was bizarre. Her laughter faded away after a short while but the smile remained.

Violet eyes stared at the butterfly on the ground then drifted to the empty patches that lay around and finally down to her ankle. "Ya know what you said...about his friends...well he needs them." Malta nodded once and lifted her head. The only other butterflies around were the ones on her coat. "Once I'm gone, there won't be any of his kind around."

Well he was mostly certainly a male and could assure her of that much, but he was accustomed to many regarding his hair colour and coat colour as questionnable. There were those in the world who chose to giggle at him, address him by bizarre nicknames and goad him for a response but this particular stallion was content to accept their views. He was comfortable in how he looked and content to the point that such views and remarks were trivial and simply the musings of another individual. He was firm in his belief that all were entitled to their opinions (even if they were abusive) and as such made no attempts to correct them - such a thing would be hypocritical after all!

He was a deeper thinker than that and as a consequence he wandered the world with a smile on his lips and a wistful expression upon his face. Those around him could muse, ponder and worry while he would simply accept. His duty was to inspire those around him, he had no intention of dampening their creativity and such was the position he now found himself in now. He was in the presence of a sensitive artist who took such pride in her work and gave each image a life through her own imagination.

It was nice.

"Well, you feel better now...no?" Zhu circled the drawing once again, chuckling softly at the wavering smile upon the butterfly's lips. He'd noticed that she had taken to observing him but was happy enough for her to satisfy her own curiosity as he spoke. "Though if you are worried about his loneliness, then perhaps you would consider drawing him more to accompany him?" he enquired softly. He would not draw with her, but if necessary he would be content to play a song on her behalf as she worked. They could both be creative in their own ways...

She smiled and bobbed her head once. "I do." She answered watching him walk about her butterfly again. What was he doing? Her head began to tilt to the side as though it would help her see things more clearly. From this angle he looked very strange to her but he sounded the same. "That's a good idea..." She said straightening her head. Why hadn't she thought of that? Who knew. She'd draw later though, she had a guest of a sort at the moment so she was supposed to keep him entertained right? "He can wait a little while don't you think?"

Malta's eyes went back to her grounded friend for a moment and she gasped. He was in a bubble. She blinked at him for a moment then laughed. "Well how'd you get in there?" She asked not minding the change. It was good, a bubble could keep him safe. She studied the new addition to her drawing for a moment before an idea came with her. "I get it!" She exclaimed with no indication to what she suddenly understood before taking off following the lines of the circle.

"I'll only be a little while okay and we can still talk! I'm just gonna put some little friends in here for him okay?" It was a perfect plan really. If she put them in the bubble with him then they'd be able to hear each other and they could stay together! It was good. Then they wouldn't ever have to be worried about being lonely.

Now she just had to find the right places to put his friends.

He hadn't intended for her to think he'd drawn a bubble! That being said he released a mild chuckle as her imagination grasped the slightest inspiration and went wild. He was glad to have been of assistance and with a small beat of his wings he hopped away from the circle without disturbing it further. She needed her space, to work on her canvas of snow and he was content to permit her what she required. He chose to stand on the outskirts and with a small snort, buried his head in his wing to retrieve his pet leaf. It was in amazingly good condition despite the foul weather and one could only assume that it was preserved through the Angeni blood that ran through his blood and radiated from his coat - subtle as it might have been, it had the ability to keep his beloved pet safe - the only being alive that knew exactly who and what he was.

Keeping his rose eyes upon the mare, he watched her with kind regard and waited patiently for her to decide upon the best location for each of her butterfly's friends. In hindset and had he known that she regarded his pacing as a bubble he would have made it larger but alas, this was how such things worked out and he would accept it as such. He had faith in her ability to make a masterpiece out of what he had granted to her. A mere spark of inspiration was all it took and she had found it. As always a wistful smile drifted across his lips and having been of assistance now it was time for him to let the true performer take the stage.

Now that he had observed her fully he was content to prop his leaf between his hooves, supported by the mass of fluff surrounding them and then he simply began to play. At first it was a soft, high pitched whistle but with careful coaxing and negotiation it began to play a soft tune - if anything it would give the mare something to dance to as she worked!
PostPosted: Mon Jan 12, 2009 11:19 am

Malta hadn't noticed him leaving the circle at all. She was surprisingly focused on her drawing. It was surprising because her entire family seemed convinced that she was incapable of focusing on anything for longer then a minute. For a thief this was a bad thing. Luckily she was not a thief anymore. She was a snow artist, at least for the time being, and this artist had found the perfect spot for the first butterfly friend.

Shifting her weight slightly she lifted her right foreleg and began to carve a picture into the snow. At first she was oblivious to the tune in the air but before too long her tail moved in time with the song. By the time she was consciously aware of the song she had finished to miniature butterflies in her chosen patch.

She blinked a few times before setting her foot back on the ground and lifted her head. Violet eyes quickly located the source of the music and she could not help but stare in both awe and confusion. Her companion was making the music with something but what exactly was it he had in his hooves?

Curious, she jumped away from her drawing and made her way closer to the pink haired stallion. Her steps naturally fell in rhythm with his tune and that alone made her want to neglect her drawing and dance about for a little while. First things first, though, she had a couple questions for him.

"What...is it?" She asked stopping her approach. She tilted her head to the side a bit as though it would make things any clearer.

As she approached Zhu lifted his gaze and ceased in his playing, his leaf remained propped in his hooves for a little while longer until she made her enquiry. Once she had asked though, he quickly dropped down and retrieved it, slotting it neatly into his right wing. The vibrant green of the broad leaf stood out against the pale pink of his feathers but no one could doubt the nature of his instrument when it was held in such a display. No one had ever quite understood how he played it and they barely ever took him seriously when he informed them that the leaf was his friend but alas...such was the way of things - he couldn't make them hear what he did, the whispers were something that creatures found on their own.

"The music?" he began at last, though he was fairly certain that the mare had heard of music before. Music came in many forms - through the simple tapping of ones hoof to the dramatic shrill of a bird cry. It was impossible for a creature not to have experienced music at some time in their life. Granted a lot of the time music was abstract and served to irritate those who didn't understand it but there were other times when they were pleasant and could be appreciated. Zhu's music generally depended on the situation and he himself, was not adverse to playing music that would drive a creature to distraction.

"Or do you mean my friend?" He motioned to the leaf with a nod of his head and smiled. He could only hope that during the time he had played, she had found the time and inspiration to complete her drawing. So long as she had achieved her goal then he would be content. "I would assume my friend, the leaf - he is most pretty is he not?" he enquired gently, matching her pose with a tilt of his own head.
