Which do you like better? Harry Potter or Twilight?

As for me, I like Harry Potter a lot better than Twilight. Jo does such a better job of plot developement. She also moves the story along a lot faster than Meyer does. Meyer seemed to spend a lot of time with just blah blah in my opinion. But again, that's just my opinion. What's yours?

Totally Harry Potter, I love the characters, and there is no ultimate character, everyone can die by someone elses hand, not just by one person. And besides, the Twilight series wasn't that great...dang-it, vampire just don't sparkle, it's not possible, and in Meyer's book, they can only be killed by a were-wolf, that isn't really a were-wolf, more like an animagus...hey look, Harry Potter related...Meyer totally stole the idea from Rowling. I don't see what the whole Twilight fan craze is about anyways.

I enjoyed the Twilight books. They were books that kept me entertained, but Harry Potter all the way. I guess I can relate more to Harry Potter. Plus, I decided that I would take James or Ron over Edward. Harry Potter addicted me to books, so it will always have a special place in my heart. I don't know how to say it, but let me just say Twilight isn't even close to taken Harry Potter's place.

I liked Harry Potter and Twilight for different reasons.

Harry Potter has a good plot. I liked Jo's way of manipulating the world and the characters. It is a very good example of original thought in a time of copycats. I really did grow up with Harry Potter and the series will always have a dear place in my heart.

Twilight, on the other hand, has really good, well-developed characters. Even if the world of popular thought surrounding vampires Stephenie delved into has nothing similar with the world she wrote about, or if you think she's the biggest copycat of all, she still has the best cast of rounded characters that I've read for a long time.

If you're in the mood for a good adventure slash mystery with great literary red herrings, pick up Harry Potter.
If you're in the mood for a good romance with times of suspense and a great cast of characters, pick up Twilight.

They are totally different genres, and I don't understand why people always want to compare them, but these are my two Knuts.

Harry Potter of course!
I liked Twilight very much but New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn were just... disappointing, a bit boring...
And the sory of Harry Potter is much more complex and acptivating than the one of Twilight, well at least that is what I think...

Matelia is totally right! They are completely different from each other and, in my opinion, really can't be compared much. I loved them both for different reasons.

Harry Potter reads to me as an epic fantasy. It has very well developed characters and Rowling has a unique way of making the characters seem very real in surreal surroundings. It's a story that goes beyond a simple good vs. evil and actually includes some really great lessons along the way. The fact that the books were always interesting and didn't drag is a testament to Rowling's writing. Especially considering the length of each book. Harry Potter was just way too cool. It was more of a phenomenon than just a book. Plus I definitely grew up with the books so they will always be one of my favorite series.

Twilight was also really good. Yes, I agree with Alli-o-pop that there was a lot of "blah blah" but it's just because the writing styles are very different. One of my favorite things about Twilight was the witty banter and the conversations between Bella and Edward.

They were both great but Harry Potter is just in a league of its own.

Hmm, I think everyone likes to compare them because they're giants in the fiction genre. However, Twilight doesn't even come close to touching Harry Potter. Meyer basicly turned something you would find on Quizilla into a book. I really don't understand why it has such a large fan-base. The books are very boring and they drag on way too much. Bella is the definition of a Mary-sue, and Edward is just too perfect. Also I agree with head of slytherin; Vampires do not sparkle!

I would have to say I definitely prefer Harry Potter to Twilight.
It was much better written and have much better character development. Though in comparison to Meyers book Host I would have to say I like that one better. It was just so well written and had so much going for it. (I suggest it to all of you who liked the Twilight series.) Sorry for that little tangent that went off subject. Anyways I just found Harry Potter to be the better series all in all. Though that really could be due to the fact that I grew up reading it more than anything else.

Twilight is no competition for Harry potter.

I think Harry Potter is much better, and I agree with Head of Slytherin Snape, the characters are a bit unusual for those type of characters.
My friend said she saw a an interview with Meyer and she said she had a dream of a vampire, and when he stepped out of the shadow, he started sparkling. I don't think she was copying, but basing it off of a dream.

HARRY POTTER all the way.

See, I turned to Twilight after the series was over because people said Twilight was really good. Don't get me wrong, Twilight was really good, but Harry Potter is just so much more interesting.

Also, Twilight is just starting to annoy me because all the fans are screaming little 13-14 year-olds that just think Edward is hot. Harry Potter has fans that truly value the books and not because a character is hot. HP books are books that you can spends hours talking about and just hit the surface. I like the mystery and the complexity of it. There are things that I am still learning. In Twilight, there is no mystery, no things you have to work out for yourself.

The thing with Twilight is, its not as *complicated* as Harry Potter. Jo put so much effort into the tiniest details, like name origins, and place origins and significances, and myths, and while Meyer may have some of that, its not quite at the same level. If Twilight hadn't of exploded like it did, maybe she would have grown to be at that level. And who knows, she still could.

As a side note....

I'd have to say that I like that Harry Potter series a lot better than Twilight.

When I first started reading the Twilight series, I loved it. It seemed like it was the best thing in the world. (Almost better than Harry Potter, I'm ashamed to admit. sweatdrop ) I thought the writing, the characters and the plot were amazing. Then, Breaking Dawn came out and almost instantly after I finished that book, I didn't like the series anymore. I looked back and realized just how unrealistic (though that's the point, it's fiction) everything about the series was. Vampires shining? What? No. Bad Stephenie. Stalking? Illegal Mr. Cullen. And trusting a dangerous possible killer without a second thought? Not a very smart idea, Bella. Not a good idea at all...

I mean, I had a couple of complaints with the Harry Potter series but otherwise, I found it to be a lot better than Twilight. It had good plot (in my opinion) and had a bunch of different elements. It could have taken in so many different directions. There were (and still are) so many possibilities.

I solemnly swear that I am up to no good...

OH. MY. GOD.
okay people, YOU CAN NOT COMPARE TWILIGHT TO HARRY POTTER!
This topic infuriates me. Now, don't get me wrong about what I'm about to say, I love Twilight but Harry Potter totally wins for me kay?

Alright.
Harry Potter and Twilight are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS! you just CAN'T compare them... Harry Potter is a complex world. J.K Rowling made up this fantasy world with her own spells, schools, creatures, and practices. Twilight exists practically in our own muggle world with a little twist: vampires. Now, the vampires in Stephenie Meyer's amazing love story are complicated and more than your average Dracula. But thats only one thing compared to Harry Potter.
Now, think about this for a second: Vampires and Wizards. Are they alike in anyway except for the fact that they're magical? NO.
Harry Potter is a in a completely different leage.
Also, Harry Potter has had more time to grow and develop and has a bigger fandom made up of pretty much everyone. Twilight, however, is attracting mostly women.

Now, THINK. Can you really compare? If you still think you can, you're mental. XD

>> I've posted in another forum like this in this guild but it had Lord of the Rings. ((YOU CAN'T COMPARE THEM EITHER)) I said in that post what I say now: If any of you would like to talk to me on this subject, feel free to pm me. I made this post a lot shorter than what I actually have to say on the subject so YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. I could go on for ages. <<

Bahahaha. I love you <3

I really can't see where all this Twilight love is coming from. And saying things like "the characters are rounded and well developed" "great story" about Twilight actually offends me. Because, see, here I was thinking that a character needed to have flaws to warrant being dubbed compelling. Is this not the case anymore? None of the characters in Twilight have any personality at all. Bella is a Mary-Sue, instantly adored by all who meet her, smarter than the other students at her school (or so we are told) she goes on and on about being so plain and yet everyone thinks she is drop dead gorgeous. Ugh.
Edward's only hook is his physical attractiveness, and in fact fangirls know this. They think it is refreshing to have a character only exist to be lusted over? No. Just no. He is a moving mannequin. The only character that was introduced who had any discernible personality was Jacob. This was however, only introduced in the second book. But by the third book this had all but dissipated. He had devolved into sexual abuser and an emotionally manipulative a*****e. He forced himself onto Bella, kissing her without her consent and abusing his strength to do so, she is even said to shut down, JUST LIKE A RAPE VICTIM. Then he tries again later, by threatening to commit suicide if she doesn't kiss him. By the forth book he has become physically abusive, thrashing and shaking Bella until she is in pain, then he becomes a *****. Nice one there SMeyer.

As for the story? Not original. And no plot. In this argument, plot will be defined by the main conflict of a story. The main conflict of Twilight is often seen as either a) Bella trying to discover Edward's secret, then dealing with said secret or b) James. Edward being a vampire is stated on the back cover, so spending half the book trying to discover said secret is pointless and annoying. Then, Bella accepts the fact that Edward is a vampire instantly, instead of trying to cope with this fact, being scared or rejecting him. This is unrealistic, idiotic and most importantly, removes the most interesting conflict that the books could have possessed. The conflict with James only arises within the last 100 pages of the book, reads as forced and like it was only added in later to make up for lack of plot. It’s resolved easily enough considering the length of the book as a whole, and Bella escapes with a broken bone or two and no doubts at all about her relationship with a guy of the same species as the guy who just hunted her down and nearly killed her. Instead of, you know, growing as a character in any way. Whatever.
The characters do not go through any major changes throughout the four books, well, except for Jacob of course. They are the same two-dimensional cardboard cutouts at the end of Breaking dawn that they were at the beginning of Twilight.

And I disagree, even though they are not comparable on grounds of character arcs, plot, writing ability or themes, they are definitely comparable. They are both seen as big shots of modern fantasy. They both try and say something on love (granted, Harry Potter actually succeeds at this, where as there is no actual love in Twilight, merely lust and obsession. Oh, and abuse. Lots and lots of abuse.) And they both try and break out of literary cliches (Again, Harry Potter actually does this, by breaking the hero, role of destiny and magic cliches of fantasy, where Twilight tries to say "look, I am so original, I make the vampires not have fangs, sparkle in the sun and be completely invincible by conventional means")

I've already written a long argument of my feelings towards Twilight compared to Harry Potter in another thread, so I wont again. I will simply direct you to the thread right over here

And again, please feel free to state your own opinions and thoughts to me, I am always up for a debate or serious discussion.

And yes, I am an Anti-Twilighter. I have been for about a year now. I have read all four books personally and did somewhat enjoy Twilight upon my first reading. Which was last year when Harry Potter ended, yes that is more than a coincidence. I thought the first book had some merit until I discovered that the Cullen's were "vegetarians" and sparkled in the sun, up until that point I could still get into the "trying to deny you're dark nature in order to grow in love" aspect. (I'm a sucker for those types of Vampire stories. PUN INTENDED) But then it was "I can easily deny my true nature, except with you because you are soooooo speshul Bella." From then on I saw it at best as a cheesy fluff piece (which is fine), and at worst, well, see link. I still read the next two though, because I had HP-is-over depression and needed to keep reading, but New Moon was sluggish and by Eclipse I hated them wholeheartedly. I was like "Fine, I will go back and read Twilight again, try and get back into them" but I seriously couldn't see what I had seen before. (I mentioned this because most people claim "you only don't like them because you haven't read them)
