The wind whipped bangs into warm brown eyes, a crisp winter breeze against sweated flesh. Her forelegs reached out, hooves gripping the frozen earth, throwing her forwards. Her hindquarters moved in unison, kicking up dirt as she galloped headlong. She was a racehorse at heart. If it were permissable, she would have a woman on her back and a bit clenched between her teeth. Running was...exhilarating. It wore out the nerves that kept her moving 24/7 like a little coffee jumping bean. It made her feel as if she could fly, even when she didn't have wings. The only one of her sisters who didn't, in fact. Slowly she slowed to a trot. She was going nowhere inparticular. No one caught her eye. Soquili were about, but they were just shells. As she pulled to a halt, she browsed the grounds, then settled down to graze.

The black and purple mare snorted, her white hooves pounding the ground. Her eyes, wide with what could be called fright, darted around, searching. She skidded to a stop and looked around again. Nothing, except other Soquili. Duskai swallowed and calmed down her heart. It had probably just been a bird or something that sent her galloping off. She could have sworn it was a Kalona or one of those Skinwalkers... even if she didn't know what they looked like. The mare shook her head and turned to find a nice stream or something. ...Right into another mare. Her head crashed into the other mare's shoulder and Duskai jumped back. " S-sorry..." she muttered, keeping her head down.

The stench of fear burned the nose of the young mare, her head jerking up instinctively. She heard hoofbeats and she could smell the panic coming off of another in waves, but her sight was limited. No one seemed--OH.
She stumbled forwards a few steps, whipping her head around to come face to face with a feminine purple mare, her white mane disheveled and her eyes wide, the whites showing.
"H-Heya. No worries," she chirped, dancing to the side and nudging the stranger on the shoulder. "I'm Lani. What're you running from?" Lani looked up, scanning the horizon, but nothing seemed out of place.

Duskai blinked and looked up through her white hair at Lani. "Ah... I thought there was... a Kalona trying... to attack me... I think it was just... a bird though. I'm... Duskai," she said to her, not so much choosing her words carefully, as trying to breath.

A Kalona... Fanged beasts with wide leathery wings and tails like deadly whips. Lani grinned at the idea. They were lethally beautiful. She could understand why Duskai, this mare, would run, but she couldn't say she'd do the same...
"Just a bird?" Why would you run from a bird? "It's safe now, though, right?" Not that she was worried. She just wanted to keep the new mare talking. To keep her from going into shock...or something.

The mare nodded, and shook out her mane. "Yes... I am a little... skitish..." she said with a small smile. Duskai brought her head up, and attempted to be more open to the other mare.

"Skittish isn't a bad thing," Lani smiled, chocolate eyes bright. "Sometimes, though, you're skittish because you've got too much energy. Like myself, for example. D'ya wanna run with me? I mean, ya don't have to, but maybe you'll run out your nervous energy?"

Duskai tilted her head to one side in thought. "Sure... I like running... It is fun... I think," she said, nodding. Running was the one activity she enjoyed the most. She loved to run. Running was good. It took care of excess fright, excitement, or energy, kept her mind off other not so pleasant things, and was a great survival instinct. She'd take it any day above walking or flying, even though she couldn't fly.

How could she only -think- running was fun? Running was, quite literally, a blast. Lani just wished that as fast as she could gallop, she could open up her wingspan and take to the skies just as quickly, just like her sisters did. But she'd only fly in her dreams with invisible raven wings.
Trotting circles around the older mare, Lani pranced from hoof to hoof, snorting like a filly as she bobbed her head. "Ready then, Duskai?"

A wave washed over the quiet mare, and a look of pure excitement came into her eyes. Duskai nodded her head and flicked her tail out from hoof reach.
"Yes... Lani. On your call," she said, pawing at the dirt in front of her. Her white hooves left groves in the ground. Had she paws like the other animals she'd seen around, her claws would be flexed and dug into the ground. Duskai let a grin creep into her face as she waiting in anticipation.

Lani threw her head up, falling into place beside the dark-pelted mare. As Duskai scuffed at the ground, Lani's own lavender hooves bit the earth as well. "Ready?" She gazed over at the newfound excitement in Duskai's grin. "Seeeeeetttttttttttttt...."
Her muscles tensed and she was ready to spring at once. "GO!" And her hooves leapt out from under her in one big bound.

Duskai shot off, leaping forward as though she was hurdling a log. The mare's hooves no sooner hit the ground then they were off it again as she ran. Running was the one thing she enjoyed the most, and this was why. She felt as though she could fly without wings. Duskai ran almost as fast as she could go.
She wouldn't go full speed so soon in the race. She would never gain a lead if she did that. Duskai galloped up toward Lani, only half a length behind her. This would be fun.
