My mom owned one of those Singer sewing machines that you have to go back and forth with a pedal using your feet.. It was cool..

One thing I'm looking forward to when my parents get too old-- the old treddle sewing maching they have in the basement. That is one sewing machine I know I can use! (Sewing machines and I are not very compatible.)

I do think the treddle sewing machines are cool. I think the one my parents have belonged to one of their grandmothers, if I remember correctly.

Ah yes, we have one of those. It still works too! We also have one of the very first electric sewing machines.

Right now ours are just for display as they are so old.

You can sometimes find them at estate sales or in thrift stores and antique stores, but more often than not it is nearly impossible to find working ones unless you have luck on ebay and sites like that.
I'm trying to convince my mom to let me get hers serviced since the place in town services not only the modern ones but those ones as well. I would love to play with hers.

...
Oh dear. I never would have tried that.
I have one that works just fine, and my elderly neighbor gave me her church-lady's not-working trio.
So from the many, I hoped to build one...when I'm finished I'll post a picture of my repaired model.
17 Feb.2011:Update: My darling man has agreeded to do the wood working repairs, and a local store offers the belt needed to connect the footpedal (treddle) action to the shaft within the sewing machine body! Ahh.. now to loose the rust.

I have one of the old treddle sewing machines and it works great, it belonged to my mother, I remember it when I was little. She could sure make it sing. She had it electrified but it can easily be changed back to the old way which I did but I kept the parts for electrifing it. Prefer the old original way. I would never piece mine out, but I have bought an old one that was in very bad shape and took the cabinet off and used the base with a slab of marble to make a great candy making table.

Vintage Singers are incredibly valuable. they don't make anything as sturdy anymore.

Mine's not a treddie, but i wouldn't trade it for anything more modern.

Ahh, an old singer. I did mild sewing some time back, it was the only machine I ever used. Close to 50 years old, most likely more. That was the time we've had it.

You might be able to find them at antique stores. Our sewing machines were all inherited.

My mom inherited my grandmother's and it is just a shame to see what disrepair it is in. It all looks possibly workable (except that we long ago broke the leather belt that well, worked it.) if I just sat at the computer and figured out how to fix the poor thing. Right now the machine is folded under into it's table which looks HIDEOUS and has house plants on it that drip water all over it.

Someday I will rescue it. Though right now, I have nowhere for it to go anyway. crying

I hope it can be restored when it can be rescued.

My current sewing machine is one of plastic and metal. While it works great it has none of the soul that the older machines have. It doesn't quite feel the same as when I'm sitting at an old machine.

My currrent mission is to revive the cabinet on a treadle that I was given. The last owner's family left it in the garage, until it was very sad dusty & rusty.
Brighter note: I still have my treadle machine from my family; my mom taught me to sew with that machine.
