Stepping up the curve to the Daemonology shop, an ex soldier with an arm load of old herbal books approached the door. Papers that were once pinned up to the windows with tape and pushpins were scattered into the dusty corners of the building. Bassett was no secret agent, but he could tell almost immediately that there was something terribly wrong. He carefully stepped up to the door and twisted open the brass latch, entering the store with the likeliness of a soldier crawling across No Man's Land in the dead of night. What he saw both surprised and disturbed him, books were rudely ripped off of their shelves and everything was askew. It had been touched and rearranged, somewhere in the middle of the clean-up process, but it couldn't hide what had transpired there.

Bassett silently gave a nervous swallow and he hugged his books tighter to his chest, at once reverting to old wartime tactics. His better sense made him pause by the register and he called out, "Hello? Is anyone here? Edward?"

"Mr. Ellery, hello," said Edward, emerging from behind a bookshelf. One arm was full of heavy-seeming tomes with large locks on them; the other had a fine golden chain looped around it that connected to a thin, greenish rapier. It had the dull sheen of a blade, well-cared-for, that had seen long use. "Do forgive the mess, we had a bit of an incident with a demon." He peered over the armload of books at Bassett.

It seemed, for a moment, like he would say something else, but then a brunette child tackled one of the soldier's legs. "Bassy!" Odessa squeezed her friend's leg so tightly she might have had to worry about breaking it, except she was always careful around her human friends, so... "Bassy! I missed you!"

"A demon?" Bassett echoed, his voice filled with worry as he juggled his book in his arms and set them down on the registration desk, "Is anyone hurt? Are you okay? What can I do to help you?" He was about to rush forward and help Edward with the books in his arms, but a little torpedo collided into his legs and he nearly lost his balance. He had to wind-mill his arms and latch onto the desk before he regained equilibrium and glanced down at the little demon princess on his hackles. His amber eyes softened at the sight of the Odessa, the little friend that he had come to befriend only days ago. After a few minutes they had quickly become friends and two carved lions later, they had become BEST friends.

"Dessy!" he piped happily, reaching down to ruffle her hair, "How are you doing, Little One? You're not hurt right? I've missed you too." He kneeled down and took her small body into his arms that were still healing from his skirmish with the metal stairways. "Ouch, ouch, not too tight. I'm still healing."

A strange blade of a smile, then Edward said, "Yes, the demon is hurt." Looking about, he sighed: "And the store. Some of these are damaged beyond repair." But the sight of a demon child clinging so happily to a human seemed, for some odd reason, to amuse him.

Odessa shook her head, curls flying everywhere with the force of the motion. "Bassy got hurt?" She pulled on one side of his collar, examining the exposed skin with single-minded, almost blistering intensity. "Who hurt you? No one should hurt you. I don't like it."

"Whose demon?" asked Bassett to Edward, peering over the shoulder of the demon princess who was now playing doctor. He didn't like that the shop he had once considered a sanctuary was now in ruins. The books off the shelves, the papers torn...It made Bassett's stomach turn with worry. Who knew how old some of those books had to be...

Then there was a slight pain near his neck and the soldier gasped, chuckling in his tenor voice as Odessa began pulling away his collar to inspect his skin, "Dessy, no "one" hurt me. A stairwell did, so no one's to blame except that hunk of twisted metal and the fates. It wasn't Pey. Ouch, that's where Pey feeds, it's tender, Little One."

He looked up from where he had set the books on the desks. "The demon was unbound. Apparently he mistook me for someone else, thought I was going to kill the Queen of Demons. Clearly he was wrong." Since Lilith was dead, and Edward had had nothing to do with it... He could only assume Attis was incorrect.

"Fates are cruel," said Odessa, the distinction clear. "Sorry, Bassy." But she wasn't really repentant. Her fingertips traced the painful spot gently- she could sense it with her recently expanded powers, like a knot of something under her friend's skin. "Want me to fix it for you?"

The death of the Queen of Demons. Bassett remembered Pey saying something about that. In fact, that was the only reason why the bloodsucking demon wasn't with him now. He was back at home in the wooden support beams of the attic, paying his respects to the passing of his queen. Bassett didn't think that the demon had any manners, nonetheless respect, but he was sure surprised when the demon stated solemnly that he had his Queen to think of that day. "Yes," the soldier said softly, "Pey told me something of that...I an sorry that it came to pass. Does anyone know who killed her?"

Then Bassett's attention was snatched by the little demon princess gently stroking his tender skin where Pey often chose to feed. It was a little ways above his crushed chest and broken ribs, "Um...Fix? You can heal it?" he asked warily with the lift of his brows. It was a proposition that promised both good and bad things. First, he would be healed, second, Pey would bounce on him the first thing when he got back to Galvin's mansion. Honestly, though, Bassett wasn't sure if he wanted to suffer or...Well, suffer.

Edward shook his head at the question, then made a gesture towards Odessa. "I see you've already met Her Majesty. Well; are those the books I lent you? Perhaps that was better..."

She nodded solemnly, brow wrinkled as she followed the trail of pain down his chest. Even if she started to feel full after all this, it would be better to help her friend than to feed off him like Pey did. (Odessa did not like Pey at all.) "I c'n fix it," she confirmed.

Bassett nodded at the man and gestured with the jerk of his head towards the books on the counter, "They did a great deal of help. I learned a lot, Edwar...daaahdaaaah....daaah!" the soldier collapsed into a fit of giggles and gasps as Odessa traced her small hand down his flannel vest. Flinching away from the small touch, he gasped again as the little demon princess looked him deep in the eyes and promised help. "Well...Um..." It would certainly make doing chores around the house a lot easier if his ribs were healed, that was for sure. Bassett could handle Pey as long as he didn't overfeed.

"If you wouldn't mind," the soldier replied, he glanced warily at Edward.

Edward collected the books and, hiding a small smile, headed up the stairs.

"Kay," she said sweetly, "Hold still, 'kay?"

If Bassett was expecting something showy, he expected wrong. The princess- well, Queen- rocked forward onto the balls of her feet and pressed a chaste kiss to his lips. Accompanying it was a jolt of energy that wasn't unpleasant, just strange, and where it went health followed. She had skipped back a few steps, looking embarrassed, as soon as she could feel it working. The sensation of her own power unsettled her, something like feedback on a microphone would a human. "Sorry, Bassy. That's how 's gotta be done, though."

Of course, Bassett was thinking that there would be magic. There would be a great welling of energy, of lights and auras sparkling things according to his imagination. He expected the kind of "healing" that was in the picture shows and described in books. When the demon princess leaned forward and pressed her small lips against his, the soldier all of a sudden felt like he was doing something very very wrong. He almost jerked himself away, but the small jolt of energy kept him in place as if he were holding onto an electric fence. It swelled through his body and he felt his broken muscle tissue sew itself back together, his bones melded back together, and bruises vanished like fog before a sunny day.

When she finally broke away, she saw the young soldier's amber eyes were wide, as wide as saucers. It took a few moments for him to regain control of his fingers and when he did, he lifted his hands and felt gingerly around his chest. Surprised that he felt no pain, the soldier unbuttoned the first few buttons from his shirt and pulled it open to stare at his chest. There were no bruises. There were no anything. Not even scratches, no trace of the crushing stairwell upon his person were evident at all!

With eyes still as wide as saucers, he looked at Dessy and gaped, "Thank you..."

"You're welcome," said Odessa, her golden eyes appearing greener than the heart of a forest for just a moment before returning to the flat, liquid gold. She tripped back to his side, wrapping both arms around one of his. "You gotta go soon?" Her expression was huge-eyed and sad, like she really wanted him to stay.

Bassett smiled kindly at her and he returned the hug with a sweet embrace of his arms. This time it didn't hurt to receive the embrace and he was glad. He put down his coat to actually take the demon princess into his arms. To be completely honest, he was sure he had to go back to his Master's home soon. He was allowed to come and drop the books off on his break, and he was sure he didn't have time to sit around and dawdle.

"I must return to my duties," he said sadly, "I have a lot of work to do today."

She hugged her friend and patted his collar back into place, or slightly out of place as it were. "Okay," said Odessa, when she really meant but what if I don't see you again? With a frown, she continued, "Be careful. Stay away from those stupid staircases, okay?"

Bassett noticed that he hadn't buttoned up the rest of his shirt and he jumped on that immediately. He chuckled awkwardly as he redid the buttons and straightened his shirt, "I'll do my best," he said with a smile, "I'll come back tomorrow on lunch break okay? I don't have much time to help today, but I would like to help the shop tomorrow, alright? Can you tell that to Edward?" He lifted himself up from this haunches to stand on his feet.
