http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iPxuWgKJF4fy58hpf7YYJHQq_k6wD94PCE880I happen to disagree with this gentleman, there are plenty of problems we can never 'fix' but that does not mean we should not try. By that logic we should not worry about capturing terrorists, or eliminating poverty because those problems can never be 'fixed' either. Personally I think the fact that AIDs seems to be a lost cause is more of a reason we should pour money into the program to research for a cure or at least a treament, I mean we can only go up from here right?

Sure a disease where you can die from a common cold isn't too bad. But seriously, AIDS affects every person equally, no matter race, gender, size, or sexual orientation. That's why it's such a tragic disease. It isn't like starvation, a problem very few of us have actually seen face-to-face. The fact that anyone can get it if they aren't careful enough, and the fact that it is still a death sentence is mind-blowing.

I do not agree with the author that UNAIDS should be disbanded....but he does make a good point that other diseases actually kill more people, but it is not fashionable to fight those more mundane diseases like malaria or pneumonia. If we are talking sheer number of lives saved, it makes sense to divert funding from AIDS to these other diseases.
