Snowy Owl calls are varied, but the alarm call is a barking, almost quacking krek-krek-krek-krek; the female also has a softer mewling pyee-pyee-pyee-pyee or prek-prek-prek. The song is a deep repeated gawh. They may also clap their beak in response to threats or annoyances. While called clapping, it is believed this sound may actually be a clicking of the tongue, not the beak.
The Snowy Owl is typically found in the northern circumpolar region, where it makes its summer home north of latitude 60 degrees north. However, it is a particularly nomadic bird, and because population fluctuations in its prey species can force it to relocate, breed at more southerly latitudes has known it.
This species of owl nests on the ground, building a scrape on top of a mound or boulder. A site with good visibility, ready access to hunting areas, and a lack of snow is chosen. Gravel bars and abandoned eagle nests may be used. Breeding occurs in May, and depending on the amount of prey available, clutch sizes range from 5 to 14 eggs, which are laid singly, approximately every other day over the course of several days. Hatching takes place approximately five weeks after laying, and the pure white young are cared for by both parents. Both the male and the female defend the nest with their young from predators. Some individuals stay on the breeding grounds while others migrate.
This powerful bird relies primarily on lemmings and other rodents for food, but at times of low prey density, or during the ptarmigan nesting period, they may switch to juvenile ptarmigan. As opportunistic hunters, they feed on a wide variety of small mammals and birds such as meadow voles and deer mice, but will take advantage of larger prey, frequently following traplines to find food. Some of the larger mammal prey includes mice, hares, muskrats, marmots, squirrels, rabbits, prairie dogs, rats, moles, and entrapped furbearers. Birds include ptarmigan, ducks, geese, shorebirds, ring-necked pheasants, grouse, American coots, grebes, gulls, songbirds, and short-eared owls. Snowy Owls are also known to eat fish and carrion. Most of the owls' hunting is done in the "sit and wait" style; prey may be captured on the ground, in the air or fish may be snatched off the surface of bodies of water using their sharp talons. Each bird must capture roughly 7 to 12 mice per day to meet its food requirement and can eat more than 1,600 lemmings per year.
Snowy Owls, like many other birds, swallow their small prey whole. Strong stomach juices digest the flesh and the indigestible bones, teeth, fur, and feathers are compacted into oval pellets that the bird regurgitates 18 to 24 hours after feeding. Regurgitation often takes place at regular perches, where dozens of pellets may be found. Biologists frequently examine these pellets to determine the quantity and types of prey the birds have eaten. When large prey are eaten in small pieces, pellets will not be produced.
Though Snowy Owls have few predators, the adults are very watchful and well equipped to defend against any kind of threats towards them or their offspring. During the nesting season the owls face Arctic foxes and swift-flying jaegers and must be very careful not to leave their eggs unattended. Environmental conditions also cause local threats of food shortages, but their ability to be mobile permits them to move to areas were supplies may be more sufficient. Human activities probably pose the greatest danger to these birds, through collisions with power lines, fences, automobiles, or other structures that impose on their natural habitat. Now, Canadian provincial and territorial regulations have introduced prohibitions of killing of these birds in all parts of Canada, where they are most abundant, but the owls are still used for certain study programs.
This species is an extremely important component to the food web in the tundra ecosystem and during its visits to the south, the Snowy Owl may play a useful role in the natural control of rodents in agricultural regions.

Personality :: Quick witted, intelligent and sharp by nature Sammy makes himself a force to be reckoned with, that is if he isn’t busy apologizing for his clumsiness. The boy is actually quite sensitive and rational with his thought process however he is more often than not caught with his pants down, so to speak, when it comes to his overall thought process. The intelligence and care are definitely attributes that rule his heart however he has issues when it comes to actually portraying them. Because of this he comes off as a little more reserved than he means to. He is deeply analytical and very intuitive when it comes to new people. He cares deeply about what other people think of him personality wise and physically. Sam is easily embarrassed by his height and lack of weight and is all too aware that his eyes may creep a few people out. Often flustered, it is easy to say that Lucas is a fun guy to be around. He is energetic in his lectures and is constantly a prankster with his coworkers and students. Often picked as the fun professor for History he tries to be more difficult but then there is a coffee and he is gone. As a father he is a little less excitable and just wants to raise his children to be intelligent, well behaved yet still fun loving people.

Her clothing is ruff around the knees, overalls or jeans sporting a spattering of patches and holes. More often than not she chooses to adorn a simple pair of overalls atop a plain white tee shirt. Oddly enough it compliments her personality and her rough beauty. Scout can also be seen adorning jeans and a somewhat nice button down blouse if she must appear more feminine, but this is not practical for roughhousing. Her feet are, more often than not, barefoot but can also be spotted wearing a pair of converse or another equally simple shoe. Her tomboyish looks are most prevalent in her wardrobe, very much like a security blanket.
{ Personality }
Scout’s personality is just slight of complex. Her mannerisms never wander far from the naïve nine year old state where the world is large and she is invincible. Scout walks blissfully through life, arms open for adventure and craving something fun and exciting to pounce on. Whether it is bugging the creepy next-door neighbor or tackling the largest tree, you’ll be sure to see Scout atop it all. She has a natural affinity to make her place within any group, immediately staking her claim and her position within the pack with ease and jubilance. Late nights, early mornings and full days create her schedule, as she is never one to waste a second journeying into what is unknown.
With all of the dust kicking up at her heels it is easy to say that Scout isn’t much of an intellect. Academics, while never her strong point, stay at a constant. She doesn’t like to study more than she has to in order to appease but doing poorly is not something Scout strives for. Yet, for a girl who views science to be for old grumpy men and mathematics to each his own devil, its understandable. The street is her classroom, rather the open meadows and tree houses built in the summer. She loves to live and living teaches what she needs most. However, despite her dislike towards anything academic she’s fond of books. Any story, bedtime, daytime or lazy time on a stormy day Scout will attempt to get through a chapter or two before the scent of adventure drives her away from her calm spot. Needless to say, she is easily distracted.
Skirts and dresses, soft bits of lace and satin ribbons have never appealed to Scout. Paten shoes are horrible for running and skirts would only drag her down while crossing a stream or climbing a tree. In Scout’s eyes, the world is too dirty to look pretty. Not to mention it smells too sweet. Where femininity stands, Scout shrieks and runs for the hills. She is a tomboy, not caring much for personal appearance as she slides through muddy banks to catch that one frog or tackles a haphazard kid in the middle of capture the flag. She likes being with the boys, as most girls are just too sparkly and pretty for her tastes. Scout loves getting dirty, kicking up dust, doing what she oughtn’t and working up a sweat. She lives, breathes and sleeps activity. Despite her distinct dislike for all things overly feminine she holds within her a hopeful section that maybe sometime she will be accepted as a girl while not being completely shunned by her friends.
Scout is by nature an accepting spirit. There isn’t a soul out there she won’t try to befriend. When need be she is courteous and knows how to throw around a nice complement and be overall likeable. However, she isn’t struck to the ground when she is denied friendship. She keeps a high and friendly smile for anyone and anything, unless instructed not too. This is another quirk of Scout. As said earlier, she tends to find her place within the pack, which is hardly ever the leader. She loves to explore, loves adventure but hates holding others at stake. It is far too often that Scout will take the blame for someone she cares about yet, this all falls into her protective spirit.
Family is held as close as her friends and again vice-versa. Scout tends to keep strong emotional bonds and feels the need to protect everyone whether she cares about them or not, simply because ‘it feels right’. She doesn’t care a smidge about her own safety as long as the ones she loves are okay she is content. Black eyes are sported like metals and bandages are added stars to her uniform of defensive nature, she’ll even throw a punch if it will protect someone she cares deeply for. Of course this leads to her mothering instinct. Anyone younger, vulnerable or someone with the ability to pull off the kicked puppy look has Scout’s sympathy. She is uncharacteristically mothering to those in emotional need. While never having a mother herself she finds the instinct to be formed from what she thought a mother should act. She is kind and sheltering.
It’s not a surprise that Scout is also rather polite when the times ask for it. She is not a complete rascal as one would think from her tomboy appearance and no bounds attitude. She respects those with authority. These selective people are, more often than not, her elders. She always first addresses strangers as ‘Sir’ or ‘Ma’am’ unless they have done something right off to set her psyche out. She attempts to act, for all her worth, as a polite and well-mannered child.
Likes: Spitting, making loud noises and a mess out of things, catching frogs, running through the meadow, swinging on a tire swing, bare footedness, teaching Sammy how to be a man, cold drinks, warm days, sunsets and fireflies.
