As A christian artist I have been struggling with the human form traditionally nudity is accepted in the art world and can make for some of the greatest work. However I my self am opposed to some because its to sexual in content. Where do you draw the line? What is acceptable and what is not?
The lines have become Gray in our society and since most teens now a days wear less than some greek statues....

*snickers at last comment* True.

I am also a student of art and I understand your point of view somewhat. All I can advise is that you just to what you have to to exceed in your form and nothing else. When you study human anatomy, obviously you will have to practice such forms to understand human proportions and such. The best you can do is practice what you need to, and if you use such content in your work, think about what message you could portray and do your best not to make it provocative in any way.

I'm afraid that's all I've got, I don't really know what else to tell you, or if what I told you is even the right advice.

I understand if it's Michelanglo's statue, but if the art is Japanese hentai then I'd have to say no. If you don't know where to draw the line, ask for the opinions of others or avoid it altogether. wink

I don't think there's anything wrong with studying the human anatomy from an artistic point of view (I have several anatomy books myself, and I had to take a Life Drawing class in college). It really depends on the intention of the artist, I think, and the context in which the artist presents the work.

In painting, sculpture, and technical drawings there can be some tasteful nudity. It's different, though when some artists tend to focus only on sexual poses and try to accentuate um, certain areas that can be played down a little xd

I think there's a big difference between tasteless magazines and films and the work on the Sistine Chapel. I don't know if that helps, but that's what I think ^^

Thank you For you posts I value them. In some of my work my fairies specifically I hide parts with leaves or flowers but I feel Fairies should be nude but can be done in such a way as they are beautiful and not sleeze. I've always been a fan of Tolkien and C.S.Lewis and Fantasy in general. And I am comfortable with what I do but full nudity is uncomfortable I could not even take a life drawing class with a full nude model. I have done well but its a gray area sometimes and wanted more opinions. Thank you

You're welcome ^^

Have you heard of IMFX Magazine? It contains some pretty amazing work from fantasy and sci-fi artists around the world (sadly there's also a fair amount of sexual and/or demonic imagery now and then sad )

Personally, I'm with the Greeks that the human body is indeed a beautiful thing. I'm perfectly fine with nudity, but in the right contexts, I wouldn't draw a naked couple kissing, because I find this an abuse of my artistic ability and a couples intimacy is for them and God. If I were to come along a picture of a naked guy in a tub, I wouldn't be overly offended, because as long as it's not meant to be sexual or arousing, I consider it fine.
As for drawing it myself... I'd avoid it, just because of the society we live in with all the controversy. Although I am not opposed to drawing bums. xD

In summary, keep the context clean, and you'll be fine.

Okay here's the thing: nudity is not bad, God made us that way. Adam and Eve were naked and didn't care a bit, but when they sinned, they saw their nakedness and were ashamed. So God didn't make it bad, WE do. It used to be"pop art", now it's "STOP ART". In other countries they don't care. Now, to your artwork. don't make it(nudity) a big deal, or the thing you're going for. As in, don't make the nudity the main thing of your art. God made us in his own image, and we are beautiful in his eyes. Like the painting of God creating Adam. That's artisic nudity, because back then, it wasn't as bad.

I guess................. Hope I helped! biggrin

I honestly don't really care. As long as it's not illegal, or me in the artwork.....nothing's wrong with it. God made us naked. I'd say He wants us to express ourselves as long as we're submitting to governing authorities.
