User Image Sinzia was not too worried that monsters weren't real. In the dark, anything could be a monster. In fact, if he played his cards right, even he could be the beast they were hunting. He'd just have to convincingly get them separated, don some mud and sticks, and bam. Instant terrifying monster that clearly needs hunting.

Yawning, he sat up and blinked at the night sky, not particularly happy that this story had involved being up when the moon was. Sniffing indignantly, as if he had someone else to blame for it, he scratched lazily at his large ear with his back foot, slowly shaking his body to relieve himself of the lingering tingles from his itch.

Patiently, tail wagging lazily behind him, he waited for his young apprentice monster hunter to arrive. it was going to be an interesting night, he had no doubt of that. It would definitely test his ability to improvise and maintain character, that was for sure. And, he found himself admitting silently, he was actually looking forward to it all. The kid, though obnoxious in some ways, hadn't been all that bad, and he was almost looking forward to hanging out with him some.

And then terrifying and/or disappointing him. That thought was only vaguely formed in his mind, and only warranted half a moment of guilty consideration before it was banished. He knew what he was doing, and he wasn't going to back down now.

It was going to be fun.

It wasn't hard to sneak away. Not being small and as dark as the night itself. He waited until Marzi and Atreyu were fast asleep before making his escape. The loud snoring uttering from the lion's big nose masked his steps as he crept away from the den and into the undergrowth in the direction he had met Sin a few hours prior.

He'd barely slept at all.

Excitement had gripped him and now refused to release its hold. All he could think about was being a hero who protected innocents from the evil of monsters. And then, when it was over, he could tell people what he had achieved. That Marakl the Brave had fought monsters and survived. He hoped, silently, that he could grow up to become a hyena like Sin. Fearless, brave and downright awesome.

His tail wagged fiercely back and forth as he trotted towards the clearing. His little head was held high, large ears twitching this way and that.

And finally Sin came into view and the hyena burst from the leafy undergrowth to hurtle towards him. "Sin! SIN! I'm here! You waited!!" And he slowed, tongue lolling as he panted his exhaustion.

Sin turned his head at the abrupt entrance of his new partner in crime. He let out a laugh, though he tried to stifle it. He couldn't afford to let out his wild, uncontrollable laugh if he was going to be taken seriously for the rest of the night. Shaking his head, his thick neck moving and beating his thick mop of hair back and forth, he forced a serious expression.

"Shhh," he said, the sound punctuated with half chuckles, "you'll warn all the monsters that we're up if you yell like that!"

He took a moment, drawing a deep breath and leveling himself before nodding and offering a sly grin, "of course I waited. You're all puffed out, and we haven't even begun yet! Get yourself together, and we'll get this mission underway. I think I knew just where to start, but it's going to be tough."

He eyed his ward suspiciously, as if appraising him sceptically one last time, "you're sure you're up for this? One last chance to back down. There's no telling what might happen out there tonight." He stood, moving off slowly.

"If you're sure, then we can get going."

He clapped a paw forcibly to his mouth in an effort to quiet himself - not trusting his mouth to keep flapping unless it was actually held closed. Then, when his excitement had faded to nothing but a buzz in his chest, he released his mouth and nodded fiercely.

"Dun worry about nuff-ink, Sin. I gots me lots of energy." He wagged his tail and moved closer. "Wait and see. I'll keep a good look out for those monsters and I'll chase 'em down like a mouse!" He lifted both ears proudly and nodded again.

"I'm ready if you are...uh...lead the way!" Realising his voice had grown louder again he pressed his muzzle to the ground and gave a whimper. When he spoke again it was a whisper.

"Ready."

Sinzia wagged his tail and nodded sharply, almost believing they were really going to hunt monsters for a moment. Gathering himself, he heaved a calming sigh and grinned once more at his young companion.

"Then here we go," he said, bouncing forward and moving carefully through the night. He made sure to move at a quick clip, but not one Mar couldn't keep up with. Soon enough they were entering a line of trees, into a wooded area that was perfect for finding monsters.

He slowed down suddenly, looking around as if he really could pierce the darkness, "I don't see any sign of a monster," he whispered, lowering his voice and himself to speak to his partner in crime, "but it might be deeper in. We can go together, but it could get the drop on us. Splitting up might be a good idea, but I'm not sure you're ready for that kind of a step. You can't see in the dark, after all."

He frowned thoughtfully. "Maybe we can find a cave or something, huh?"

He trotted eagerly alongside his companion, feeling brave despite the danger they could possibly be facing. One look at Sin told him he had nothing to worry about. The big hyena seemed to know exactly what he was doing. A real pro!

He slowed and kept close to Sin's flank, glancing up as the trees creaked in the wind. Creaked or groaned? Were they trying to warn them away from the area? Ha, nonsense! Stop letting the thought of monsters get to you!

"Splitting up?" He tried his best to be quiet. "But what if it whips off with me and you ain't fast enough to catch up?" He wasn't afraid, really he wasn't!

His ears drooped. "A cave? Like, the monster's den? I guess that'd make sense. If it heard us coming it probably ran like the wind, yeah?" He took a shaky step forwards and scented the air. "Um...that way? Or..uh...that way? D'yah know this area, Sin?"

"I won't let anything make off with you, don't you worry," Sinzia said quietly, with more sincerity than he probably should have. Though, it made sense that this was something he actually meant. Of -course- nothing would run off with the pup. There was nothing out there. Still, he felt obligated to reaffirm it out loud, "I'm a trained professional, remember?"

He grinned in the darkness, then moved forward, letting Mar stay close. He nodded slowly, "Yeah, I know it, like the back of my paw. I'll keep close to you, no worries: you won't get lost. The den is this way. I think?" He feigned confusion, then chuckled and nudged the little hyena as he led the way.

"Don't look so frightened." He lowered his voice further, "shh, now. We're close. I'll scout ahead, and see if it's around. You stay here, and if I howl you come in, alrighty? If not, I'll come out and get you."

He bounced off and kept up his character until he was hidden in brush. He didn't go into the empty den, having scouted it out earlier and deciding nothing lived there. He certainly hoped nothing was in there. That would make this whole game a little less fun. Grinning and taking the risk, because he couldn't stop himself, he let out a terrified, pained howl of a call, then hid himself and watched the cave entrance.

Marakl nodded. "Okay Sin, I trust yah." And he did. He had no reason to think otherwise, no reason to think that - if danger did occur - that he would not be protected by the larger hyena. It didn't stop the pang of nervousness, however. Then, when Sin showed him the way he gave a nervous laugh and pulled up alongside him, walking so close to the other that he could have been in danger of tripping him.

His ears twitched then fell against his neck. His only reply to Sin's instructions was a curt nod. Then, slowly, he seated himself, gingerly curling his tail around himself. "Okay." He whispered. He shook with a mix of excitement and nervousness, but seemed intent on staying put and following orders.

For as much as he was worried, he also wanted to carry this out so he could tell everyone back home about his adventures.

As he watched Sin dissapear he let his mind drift slightly. He never did have much of an attention span. His eyes lifted to scan the skeletal branches of dark trees against the dark sky. They rustled and rattled as if they were turning into monsters themselves. Piercing the silence came the heavy 'clack, clack, clack' of birds flapping noisily through the branches. Then, somewhere distant, he heard another odd call he he leapt to his feet, whining, tail tucking between his legs.

"Uh...Sin?"

Just then the hyena's terrified howl rattled through the undergrowth, putting fear into the little hyena's heart. Sin! He was in trouble! What should he do? Should he go get help? No, no he had to go after him!

Raising his head he gave a higher pitched, answering howl and galloped off as fast as his little legs could take him. After a few frantic moments he arrived at the den's entrance, and, without hesitation plunged into the darkness.

The den smelt of earth and fungus. An odd smell but not horrible. His noseworked maniacally for a moment. Occasionally he caught a straggling scent of his friend - from when Sin had visited before - but nothing strong enough to tell him where he was. He opened his mouth to call out, but hesitated as he peered into the darkness.

What if he startled the monster and it came after him?!

Oh, to hell with it.

"SIN!! SIII~IIIN!!" His voice echoed horribly in the recesses of the abandoned den and he cringed back, expecting the worst.

Sinia was no longer in danger of feeling bad. He was having too much fun, a condition which often left everything else, any thoughts or concerns, flailing uselessly in the back of his head. All he could do was see his next trick, the next step. All he could feel was the exhilaration of the game, and the ridiculous thrill of execution. He was so involved in his character, in this world of monsters he had created, he had no thoughts to spare for the young hyena he was lying too.

When he heard his name being called, Sin grinned and silently moved through the underbrush. He collected brambles and strangled branches that had fallen from near by trees. He built himself into the monster he had warned his partner in crime against, not yet aware of the irony.

Bouncing through the bushes, he scrambled, making wild noises and throwing himself with more weight than a normal creature might, into the cave. Growling in the depths of his throat, the noise resonating and twisting in the empty space and bouncing back to his own ears as a far more grotesque sound than even he had imagined, he moved toward the smaller hyena.

"Your friend was delicious," he said, his voice thick and unrecognizable, "but I think you'll be better! Little pups... my favorite. I can almost taste your fear!"

Baring his teeth, Sinzia charged toward Mar, trying to tackle him. Once he had him pinned he'd show there was no monster, have a laugh, and the whole thing would be over. It was just that simple in his head.

(( I'm so sorry. I could not find this RP for the longest time. Then I remembered I'd kept the link ;___; *fails* ))

Then all was silent. No noise. No Sin calling for help or crying out in pain. The only sound was the racing thud of his heart and the sound of his quickened breathing. He took another step into the cave and called out again, quieter this time.

"Um...Sin? Hello?" His ears pinned back against his neck and his tail curled around a hind leg. Oh no, what was he going to do now?! Sin said he was going to protect him, but if he was hurt, he couldn't do that anymore. It was up to him to save the day and beat up that monster.

He was about to head deeper into the cave when the howling, angry sound started, somewhere behind him. The fur on his neck and back stood on end and he whipped around intending too run but---

---Too late!

Trapped!

The monster was in the cave now, moving towards him, the walls enhancing the sounds of his manic growl. He was large and was covered in what looked like spines and bulges. Marakl cowered, whimpering. What was he going to do against that?!

"What did you do to Sin?" He cried, silencing himself as the words sank in. No. No! "You didn't. You wouldn't. Not Sin! He's my friend. He's the monster hunter. He's supposed to get you! Now I'm going to have to do it!" But he'd spent far too much time talking and now the monster was chasing him down. He tried to turn but his hind legs tangled and he rolled across the floor, squealing in horror.

"No, no, wait! I'm not tasty!!"

(No worries! I've been really... disconnected... from the interwebs, so I don't mind at all. I totally understand technical difficulties ^^;;; )
Uh oh.

Sinzia's 'fun' rating dropped dangerously low as he watched the pup try to run and fall down. Still, he couldn't stop himself as he pounced, landing lightly, with particular care not to put his heavy paws on the younger hyena until after his weight had settled and there was no danger of harming him, looming high above him and laughing darkly. The laugh eased off however, into a familiar sound as the yellow hyena leaned his face closer to Mar's.

"I don't think you would be tasty," he said, grinning and tilting his head, "and I don't think any monster would have either." He laughed wildly and stepped back, shaking the collected debris from him as he sat down heavily, his body still shaking with his laughter despite his best efforts to stop it. He wasn't sure what he was laughing at, really. His cruel little game, or the young hyena's reaction, or maybe he was just reacting to the thrill. Or, more likely, he was feeling guilty and masking it by pretending this is exactly how it was supposed to go.

Which, it was, except for the fact that he wasn't enjoying it as much as he had imagined.

"You should have seen your face! There are no monsters in here, or anywhere, kid. Well, except for me," he grinned, though his eyes dimmed with what was supposed to be a joke, "you okay?"

His eyes wide, unblinking but filled with fear. Marakl had never been scared in his life and now he realised how terrible it was. His heart was pounding so hard and so fast he thought it was going to burst right out of his chest and do a little dance right there. But it didn't and a moment later the fear died away a little...

He ws being released and suddenly the monster was shaking himself. The odd bumps and claws that covered its body began to drop away and suddenly realisation hit him.

It was Sin!

He wasn't sure whether to just collapse with disbelief or burst into relieved laughter. He chose the laughing option and when Sin asked whether he was okay the uncontrollable giggles burst forth.

"I...I....I thought you were gonna eat me!" He managed to splutter through his laughter. "I can't believe...how...bad you got me, Sin." His laughing turned into coughing and it took a moment for him to gather enough breath to speak again, calmer this time.

"You sure did make a convincing monster. I thought I was a gonner!" He drew in a deep breath and wagged his tail. "So, that was all....a game?"

Sinzia cleared his throat. This, he imagined, was the perfect time for another lie. He was glad the kid was taking it so well, the guilt lifting off his shoulders almost immediately. He didn't need much to make him feel completely justified and without remorse. Laughing again, he nodded, realizing there was no need for him to make anything new up.

"A game, sure! Why not? I'm a playful guy." He laughed. Of course it had been a game. After all, Sinzia certainly had been having fun, "you shoulda seen the look on your face, small fry. I thought you were going to pee yourself or something." He grinned, his ears perked forward and his tail swishing wildly behind him.

"There aren't no monsters, not here, not anywhere," he said again, shaking his head and looking a bit pompous, "there are only bad guys, like me or some lion or something. But man, that was fun. For a second there, I was almost believing it."

He hooted, panting, his tongue lulling out the side of his mouth as he spoke.

"Still, you made a good little partner, and I'm glad you're not all whiny and crying at me about it. Show some real fortitude, I think. I like guys like you. You know how to have fun. That's something to take pride in, I think. Makes you smart." He grinned, not knowing when this became a lesson in life, but rolling with his impulses.
