Welcome!

I've noticed lately that the "nice" prides far out-number the "mean" prides, and that most of the latter know that others don't respect their actions. So, I propose the idea of an isolated pride with a superiority complex that whole-heartedly believes that they are the good-guys. I present to you the Da'mumachozi.

Okay! So after reading about how various utopian societies are run, I propose to have this pride loosely based on the Oneida experiment. So... a few of the policies are going to be changed to reflect that. Primarily the principle of complex marriage and the loosening of parental control of arranged marriages. However, the main distinction between the two groups is that the D'M is, ultimately, a monarchy (although it does have a panel as well), where as the Oneida experiment was very communal/extremely equal. So yay for a democratic communist monarchy, right? *shot*

To come...

Summary:

The Da'mumachozi have always been an isolated pride, but they used to have a more open "guest-policy." Ultimately, this led to an infected leopard eventually gaining entry and infecting almost the entire pride. Thus, the already low numbers of the pride dropped ever lower, the pride grew more suspicious of rogues, and the Gawa resorted to more desperate measures to bring in new blood.

Full-blown version: (still being edited)

A long long time ago, Empathy fell deeply in love with a mortal named Azizi. The two vowed devotion to each other, and the bond was sturdy. He got a group of friends and family and assembled a tribe of followers, dedicated to being a light in a dark and evil world; to help and protect the less fortunate. She took them to her birthplace & home: the mountain valley. She told them it would protect them from outside creatures that may wish to cause them harm. The lions agreed, and lived there happily.

The problem came when Empathy bore the mortal's cubs. They were seers, and with their mother's tendencies, often were emotionally taxed by their visions. One of the cubs had particularly strong visions of wars and destruction. The pride poured their efforts into keeping him stable. He was the most benevolent of the litter, and chosen to be heir. The pride was distressed about their most prized member, but lived in peace and happiness, allowing members to come and go as they pleased--though few wished to leave. The heir took the pride's most beautiful lioness as a mate, and she gave birth to one litter as an adolescent.

But it could not last. The heir's health declined further as he reached adulthood, and on his death bed, he conveyed his most frightening vision; a plague would sweep all lands, and kill many. It would find its way into the pride, and most would die. This vision drained the last of his strength, and he fell into the paws of death. Empathy, who sat beside him as he lay dying, could not bare the pain her empathy was causing her: she felt the pain that her son felt, the pain of thousands of deaths happening simultaneously. She flew to a cave high in the mountain-side and forced herself into a deep sleep, desperate to escape the pain.

Azizi soon passed away from old age. Even her sleep, Kia could feel the loss. The pride was left to the deceased heir's wife and children. Panic arose in the pride; disputes abound as to the Great Seer's intentions.
Did he mean for them to stop the plague from spreading? Though that meant killing the source, it would save thousands; they sent out a small, elite team. Did he mean for the pride to be lion's last remaining society, to spread out on the plains once more at the dawn of a new era? They set up guards on entrants, and refused to let members leave, claiming it was in the pride's best interest. They captured foreigners; hid them away to protect them from the plague as well. They were the light--they had to survive.

But as decades passed and belief that the plague was actually going to come faded, their policies eased up slightly and the kings believed it to be merely a story from the past; a fairy tale, a myth, a legend... They forgot why their traditions existed. Refugees became prisoners, protection policies became discrimination against outsiders.

Empathy awoke from her sleep, and looked out onto her pride. They had resorted to unsightly measures, but they still fought for the protection of the species. She felt their need to survive, their pain. And she felt their happiness at forgetting her son's vision. The vision that had resulted in such restrictions. She flew down to the borders, and disguised herself as a member. A brown leopardess approached the territory, so Empathy approached her and asked her purpose. The leopardess said she was running from a sickness that was wiping Africa clean of prey and predator alike. Empathy knew this was the plague come at last, just later than anyone had expected, but she felt the skepticism of her pride wash over her, and the desperation of the leopardess, and so she allowed her entry as a "Prisoner Protectorate of Life," a glorified Habusu. But Empathy's first thought had been right. The plague manifested within the leopardess within a day. The Paroko and Kesha panicked and tried to find a way to heal her, but their attempts were futile. They became infected, and upon discovering their was no cure, they were killed. The plague spread still, and the Pride of Empathy slaughtered one another, desperate to save their own family, own mate, own self. Some fled higher into the mountains, the rest died. Overcome with guilt, pain, and grief, Empathy retreated into her cave once again, into another forced coma. She had destroyed her followers and her descendants because of her powers. She had ruined lion's hope.

The dispersed members hid in small caves in the mountain-side with whoever had come with them. Their hearts had hardened, they were bitter and pessimistic, and they harbored a deep hatred for outsiders, leopards in particular. There seemed to be no hope of returning to their usual life, and they despaired and sulked. Their patron goddess had abandoned them, and what had they done wrong? But one day the ground trembled beneath their feet. "She has returned," they thought, and drew out of their caves, gathering upon the old pridal grounds. It was the sign they had wished for day after day after day. It was time to rebuild the pride, stronger and better than before; only this time they wouldn't repeat their mistakes. Leopards would never be welcome again, they honor their patron more, and outsiders... would pay. Unaware that the reason for these restrictions had passed, the lions became even fiercer and more strict than before. "Let us give empathy to those who deserve it, and death to those that don't" they chanted, their cold hearts alight with rage.

And Empathy fluttered in and out of consciousness. When she finally awoke, and saw what her pride had become, she was disgusted. And yet a small part in the corner of her heart tugged at her, "They're your people. They do what they do for a reason, look what empathy has brought them." And so Empathy, for all her good character, decided that now was perhaps not the best time to show herself--there was quite some anger directed her way-- and a better time to help rebuild her pride undercover, in whatever way she could.

Earthquake: The Da'mumachozi saw the earthquake as their "Call to Action." When the plague finally found it's way into the pride, members were forced to dissipate further into the mountains to avoid contact with those infected. They were far enough from the earthquakes source that it was only steady tremble where they were, but it caused the remaining members to come out of hiding and begin to remake their pride. They "cleansed" the land with rituals then prayed to Sikia'moyo to not become sick again. It was a success: they reclaimed their lands and remade their pride.

Lions that are born into the pride are considered part of the Kubwa’Jamaa, or “Big Family.” They may have the following ranks:

Rubani
The current executive ruler; he or she is frequently referred to as the king or queen. They are not considered above the laws, but they hold a massive amount of say in the changing of the rules. They lead as a pride figurehead, and hold counsel once a month for any group that has had problems to come to her for a resolution. The king or queen may have a mate (in fact, they must), but their mate does not gain the title of king or queen and carries on fulfilling his or her role in society. Some of the duties of the Rubani include certifying betrothals and names, as well as serving various duties with each of the members of the Hekima’baraza.

Hekima’Baraza
The Hekima’baraza, or “Wisdom Assembly” acts as the representative house and has a considerable amount of say in the goings-on of the pride. The council is made up the Mkuu’mpigani, the Mkuu’paroko, the Mkuu’msaka, and the Mkuu’msomi. These position may or may not be hereditary, as the current lead of each position chooses his successor, who must then be approved by the other council members and the Rubani.

Mkuu’mpigani
The head warrior, the Mkuu’mpigani is responsible for the military success of the tribe. Together with the Rubani, the Mkuu’mpigani assembles and recruits troops and guards. The Mkuu’mpigani is expected to train and lead his troops. The Mkuu’mpigani may be either gender.

Wapigani
The warriors of the tribe that guard the entrances to the valley and various other caves. May be of either gender.

Mkuu’paroko
The head priest of the tribe, the Mkuu’paroko may be either gender, but is always a seer. The Mkuu’paroko is usually the strongest seers of the priests, and serves the Hekima’baraza by informing them of his or her visions, as well as (occasionally) conveying what the gods might desire the tribe to do or how to handle a situation.

Paroko
The Paroko are the priests of the tribe. All Paroko are seers. The Paroko busy themselves by making sure the gods are happy and discussing philosophical matters with the Msomi. The Paroko are also proficient in healing. Their healing methods are shared only with the Hekima’barazi, the Rubani, and the Kesha. Red is the color of the paroko; they may have this color in addition to the pride's normal colors, and they will not be looked down upon. Many paroko that lack red will use their dye to add red to themselves.

Mkuu’msaka
The lead hunter of the tribe, the Mkuu’msaka keeps track of the tribe’s food supplies, and directs the hunter’s circuit. May be either gender.

Msaka
The hunters of the tribe, the Msaka seek out and kill suitable food for the tribe.

Mkuu’Msoni
lead scholar, most knowledgeable, works frequently with the Saidi’mnyama. May be either gender.

Msoni
the tribe’s scholars, they seek to gain knowledge through the Saidi’mnyama’s charges. They spread their knowledge to the other Msomi, who continually tell it to the new members, and thus preserve all of the pride’s wisdom and knowledge.

Kesha
the nannies of the pride, the Kesha look after the young. During times of unrest, the Kesha also look after the sick and/or wounded, and have a wide knowledge of remedies and healing. The Kesha benefit from meetings with both the Paroko and the Msoni. The Kesha are also responsible for raising the cubs to respect the beliefs of the pride.

Saidi’mnyama
the “beast-master” of the tribe, there is only ever one or two Saidi’mnyama at a given time. A Saidi’Mnyama may only ever take on one apprentice in his life, and only after his master has passed away. The Saidi’mnyama manages the foreign creatures unlucky enough to have stumbled upon the Da’mumachozi. He keeps track of every movement his prisoners make.

Gawa→ the distributors. The Gawa travel in groups and are the only lions allowed to travel outside of the clan’s territory. They distribute the On’gon’go. Gawa are usually female, with one or two males. Due to their fierce privacy policy and limited genetic pool, it is not uncommon for female Gawa to return pregnant, having seduced a male with the correct coloring. Similarly, the males will often get lionesses or cheetahs pregnant, wait until she gives birth, and then steal away the cubs. The Gawa do not traditionally recruit older creatures to join. They only drop off their charges and, if the opportunity presents itself, cubnap some pretty cubs.

Mtoi→ the pride’s youth/cubs. All cubs born into the Kubwa’Jamaa have this title.

Mrithi→ the heir to the throne. Siblings of the heir do not get a special title, and are treated as any other clan member, though when they are cubs, the entire litter is treated specially. The Mrithi is always the offspring of the Rubani.

On outsider’s ranks:

Habusu→ the prisoners. Any adolescent or adult outside creature that wanders into the clan territory and is found. The Habusu are kept in a secure part of the valley and kept under almost constant watch. Males and females are separated. More in "The Habusu System" under "Beliefs."

Mgeni→ The Mgeni are the adult or adolescent lions or cheetahs that are considered to have “proper coloring.” They are allowed into the pride but have a Wapigani escort them to make sure they do not try to escape. They are allowed to and encouraged to mate. If they continuously prove their loyalty, they may join ranks that contribute to society. Basically, new members that are disallowed from having jobs.

Wanageni→ The Wanageni are the cubs and young juveniles with “proper coats” that are welcomed whole-heartedly into not only the pride, but also the Kubwa’Jamaa. These lions or cheetahs are given to the Kesha to be supervised by until they are adolescents and free to do what they please. Because they are treated no differently, the title merely signifies that the cub is an orphan with unknown parents (and thus can be used for lions born within the pride on the rare occasion that both parents die)

On’gon’go→ “The ugly” These are the juveniles that have the wrong color coats and are knocked unconscious or sedated before being given to the Gawa to relocate. If the juveniles are too old for the instance to likely be forgotten, they are grouped with the Habusu. Despite being informed by the Habusu that not all prides are so picky, the Gawa normally place the cubs where they think they will “belong.” Ex: Gold cubs to Pridelands and pink ones to Kunanda’Nakhun, etc.
Before the cub is relocated, the Gawa dye a black spot on the forehead, so that they will know the cub if they see him or her again. If a cub or young juvenile is revealed to be a seer, they will kill it out of fear of it seeing the past or keep him/her as a Habusu.

THIS HAS BEEN HUGELY EDITED ON 10/13/09

Cubs are encouraged to have fun and be themselves. Cubs are doted upon and supported in almost anything they choose to do.

Unlike many prides, the juvenile stage is the main transitionary life phase. Juvenile members get to choose which profession to apprentice in, or, if they are seers, they begin their Paroko apprenticeship. In addition, heirs are chosen at this stage of development. The Rubani and the Hekima’barazi decide which juvenile will become heir based on the leadership qualities displayed during cubhood.

By the adolescent stage, lions are now considered competent in their trade and function as full members. Felines entire into the complex marriage, although they may not be arranged into a breeding at this age. Heirs begin the gradual transition to assuming the throne during this stage.

Adulthood: The panel may now suggest that certain couples breed, and disallow others from doing the same (IC not OOC). This selective breeding process supposedly creates stronger individuals. The "complex marriage" is still in effect, meaning "free love" -- this allows total cross-species & same gender mating. However, individuals cannot be formally bonded because exclusive relationships, in theory, cause jealousy, violence, and drama. Adults are expected, as always, to put their full effort into their work until they are physically unable to continue (old age, sickness, etc)

On outsiders:

The Da’mumachozi value their privacy greatly. Thus, if a creature beholds a member, or even enters the pridal lands, it will not be allowed to exit. The Habusu, despite being confined to a small area and examined by strange scholars, are allowed to live rather luxuriously. In their spare time, the Wapigani assemble piles of soft bedding, and the Msaka contribute large amounts of meat, and some even gather herbs for the herbivore familiars that they haven’t eaten for some reason (if they have knowledge of outside prides). Since the reformation after the plague, even young adolescents are sometimes accepted as wanageni if they willingly join the pride and vow not to leave under penalty of death.

On coloring and appearance:

The Zuri'rangi are creatures with what the Da’mumachozi deem the “proper coat,” or a coat that includes mainly colors from the spectrum between blue & red (primarily purple/pink, but others works as well), or grayscale colors. Any offspring that do not have any of these colors present are deemed On’gon’go. Small amounts of other colors are accepted. The problem comes when a lion is more orange than purple, or a rusty brown, and then they wouldn't fit in at all. Loved ones of the Zuri'Rangi who are not Zuri'Rangi are occasionally allowed to join as Mgeni, and a few have been fully integrated into society (& are treated equally), but their children are still fully at risk of being deemed On'gon'go.

The mountain-valley that the Da’mumachozi live in has a chill climate, and as a result the inhabitants have slightly thicker coats to compensate as well as thinner bodies useful for weaving through the forest.

On non-lions & hybrids:

The Da’mumachozi view lions as superior to other species, though they are strangely fascinated by cheetahs, whose speed, grace, and slight build they admire. Thus, cheetahs are welcomed into the pride as Mgeni or Wanageni, although none of the lead positions may be filled by a cheetah. The Msomi understand hybrids and know that they are nothing to fear, though they have also observed that most are infertile. The council and the Rubani have decided that any cheetons will either be Msaka or Wapigani in order to make full use of their unusual combination of speed and strength. They exalt fertile cheetons, as they believe that these may well take the throne at a future date.

Other hybrids may join if they have Zuri'rangi. Once in the pride, they may not leave.

The Da'mumachozi blame leopards for the plague entering their lands and thus the pride will never accept leopards. Leopards found in pridal lands will be caught as Habusu, like other species, but are often abused, with the exception of those with the Zuri'Rangi, which are reluctantly left alone.

Wild Dogs are respected for their sense of smell, and while none will ever gain full rights, they are the most equally-treated Habusu if they have Zuri'Rangi. They are often brought along for hunts, and will occasionally make friends with a member. While fierce conservatives hold that the canines should be treated as pets rather than equals, the more liberal side (though that's not saying much) believes that since Wild Dogs can prove helpful if they are treated as friends, they should gain rights that place them somewhere above Habusu but below Kubwa'Jamaa.

Hyenas are considered annoying, and are treated accordingly.

On Familiars:

Members are allowed to keep familiars, and on occasion a serval will gain the full rights of membership, due to their similarity in species to the lions. Birds and snakes, in contrast, are viewed as extremely inferior and untrustworthy, and are members are therefore suggested not to take one on as a familiar.

Index:

Mazishi: funeral: the Da’mumachozi lay their deceased in the Pongomata, a cave dedicated to the dead. It is the duty of the Paroko to dig up the opening to the cave again and place the body inside, as well as to console the family of the deceased. Mazishi are not sad events due to the belief that once one has died, their spirit (and eventually their body) become one with nature.

I'll probably have more to put here later.

The Da’mumachozi live in a small mountain valley to the west of the Mwako’bi’Giza. A small stream runs through the isolated valley, and the clan resides in caves along the eastern edge. The purple area below:

& Other Beliefs

Sikia’Moyo—Goddess of Empathy
God of Apathy (subconsciously) (questing)
MAYBE Goddess of fertility, since they exalt fertile hybrids... :/

The Da’mumachozi try to limit religion so that it may not interfere with their daily life. A very Romantic pride, the Da’mumachozi do not believe in reincarnation, but rather accept the belief that death unifies the spirit of the creature with that of Nature. Their hunger for knowledge far outweighs any faith they may have, and are not swayed by the religious beliefs of those they encounter. Almost ironically, a lion’s standing in the pride depends primarily on other’s opinions of him. The scholars of the pride inspect foreign traditions and religions with a critical eye because they wish to better their understanding of the world without losing their own belief system.

And just a note to avoid confusion: Even though the pride prays to the goddess of empathy, they use a very oddly worded & self-contradictory "prayer" to do so: "Help us be empathetic to those who 'deserve it', and apathetic to those that do not."

As you can tell, they can justify almost any actions by this paradoxical phrase. The motto seems hypocritical within itself, and yet it very accurately describes the pride: kind and loving to all within their pride, but capture or kill-on-sight foreigners.

Other beliefs:

The D'M stresses a highly individualist society because they they believe that if everyone strives to do their best individually, the quality of living and effectiveness of the pride will increase. Consequently, many members are very self-reliant to a point of being borderline anti-social or over-aggressive.

Pride members must be polite to one another, however, in order for the pride to function peacefully. This common courtesy policy does not extend any further than the Kubwa'Jamaa, and Habusu are frequently abused mentally and physically despite their comfortable living area.

Da'mumachozi literally translates to "Tears of Blood" which is an odd pun, in a way. Empathy can feel other's pain, so she would cry at blood/feel the injued creatures pain. Also, since she was the one that let the infected leopard in, she felt guilty, and though she cried about it in her cave, she did not/could not act or cure her people, so the blood continued to flow over the pride lands. The last meaning is the ancestral one, in the sense that pride, Empathy's fears personified (& the result of her mistake), are also her descendants, or of her blood... So:

As the pride is a theocracy, every time a new king ascended to the throne, he picks a paroko that had proved himself dedicated. They pierce the skin below each eye so that the paroko had the appearance of crying blood. The pride chants/prays for fortune, and say they're trying to ease Empathy's pain by sharing in it. This would not usually be fatal, though mistakes sometimes happen, and other paroko bandage the honored priest below the eyes, though small circular scars would remain.

Paroko paint red lines of tear stains on themselves as a mark of honor. Paroko are already known to have red dye.

Beliefs on Specificities in Mating:

While direct inbreeding is not allowed, the Da'mumachozi accept the mating of cousins (& more distant) if there is a shortage of new blood.

Other "truths":

1. The Kubwa'Jamaa is superior to any and all other organizations of creatures. Despite its beginnings in Complete Charity, the Da'mumachozi have grown into a stubborn, elitist group that frowns upon colors dissimilar to it's long-lost patron's.

2. The Da'mumachozi are just in their actions. The pride acts out of the interest for self-preservation and on account of the prophecies. They were created to save the world, and they, in a bent and twisted way, still claim to fulfill this duty.

3. Do not try to leave. Only the pridal lands are safe from the "next" apocalypse. Any threat to the security of the pride will be dealt with swiftly and without reservation.

4. Mighty Empathy has returned. Obey her. The Da'mumachozi fervently follows the directions of their ancestor, the goddess of Empathy. Her instructions are often created or misunderstood by the Paroko, however.

5. The denial of any rule's absolute truth gives a member a temporary demotion to Habusu, with whom they will live with for an allotted amount of time. Violation by a Habusu results in death.

The Habusu System:

Habusu are separated by gender to prevent further breeding, though cubs are left with mothers until weaned, no matter their gender. The Saidi'mnyama runs a "renting" system that allows members to check out individual Habusu to serve a specific purpose (for a hunt, to help a nanny overwhelmed by cubs, to help clean up the meal area, etc.). The Saidi'mnyama must keep track of (1) who is checking out the slave (and which slave), (2) what time the creature is checked out, (3) approximately how long the member desires to keep the helper, and (4) mark when the creature is returned. He or she must then report these statistics to the guards, so they will know the location of Habusu, and are thus more able to prevent them from escaping.

The "Complex Marriage" System:

"Free love" -- this allows total cross-species & same-sex relationships. However, individuals cannot be formally bonded because exclusive relationships, in theory, cause jealousy, violence, and drama. This does NOT mean that lions are monitored to make sure they don't establish family units, i it just means they don't get the fancy title of a married couple, and other relationships aren't frowned on for being non-exclusive. However, a couple wanting to breed has to gain permission from at least one member of the panel. On the reverse, the panel will occasionally decide that a certain pairing would create ideal offspring, and request that the two breed (IC not OOC). This is an honor, and the two usually end up raising their offspring until they are juveniles anyhow (at which point most cubs are transferred into the care of the Kesha). The whole system may abhor their neighbors, which is actually the desired response, since the D'M rather need some enemies at the moment.

Would you like to join?

Ways to join:

“Old member”—if you’ve got an SoA that would fit the description and has no relatives, the old member position is open to you.

“Mgeni” –if you have an SoA that has a family but you still want them to join, the Mgeni position is available. Read in the “Ranks” post what this entails.

“Cubnapped!” Yep, if you’ve got a cub that fits the description and you want to join, the Gawa are not above cub-napping to increase the pride’s numbers.

“Habusu” –If, for some reason, you want your SoA entrapped, this would be a great choice! 8D Please do not join as a Habusu if you want him/her to be rescued, because (1) the Da’mumachozi are very secretive, and no one would know that an animal was captured by them, and (2) the Da’mumachozi have guards to ensure that no one who enters may escape. >> ALTHOUGH, possible plots may be discussed, as long as your fellow doesn't go all over the land shouting about how the pride abused him/her.
