http://www.abneypark.comReally good music, interesting sound, and totally steampunk, they have some of their songs available for free (legally) from their website. Also some music videos and the like, I found this band by Accident and absolutely love them.

I saw them live and they totally rocked. Captain Robert was really sick, but he gave 150% anyway (probably killed himself in the process) and they did not disappoint!

I've listened to 2 or 3 of their albums just recently, and while I won't say I was impressed, I definitely wasn't disappointed.
In my opinion, too much gothic techno, not enough steampunk classical (industrial classical, even). In other words, needs less electric guitar and synthesizer noises, and more actual instruments (or at least, synthesized instruments). I'll take violins, cellos, double basses, pianos, etc. over mere sound effects and distortions any day. I also have a hard time hearing the singer, but I have that problem with way too many bands for that to count against just this one band.
Oh, and the lyrics sometimes drop to "generic" or even "trying too hard," but they get an A for effort. I hope this doesn't sound like I'm outright bashing them, I did enjoy the music, but I'm not much of a fan of this type of music to begin with. If I keep playing the music, it will eventually get stuck in my head and I will figure out the parts I really do like.

I absolutely adore them. Captain Robert actually talks to his fans on http://abneypark.gothicamerica.com/index.php Which is rare for someone to actually do that. I mean who can talk to Rihanna or.... The anyone from Avenged Sevenfold, Three doors down- Or whatever! I find myself attached to the vocals of both Robert and Finn but then the great beat that the songs have :3 The mysterious aura in 'All the Myths are True', 'Breathe', and 'The Only One' have also get me. Right now I am in love with 'Airship Pirates'.... It makes me want to dance even though I'm sick...

I always thought that steampunk music ought to have more Romantic (the music period, not "lovey-dovey") influence. Although I do occasionally enjoy the whole techno/industrial thing, I feel that to have that element of anachronism/speculativeness or what-have-you, there should be a combination of old and new or at least some influence of old.

Although I do occasionally enjoy the whole techno/industrial thing, I feel that to have that element of anachronism/speculativeness or what-have-you, there should be a combination of old and new or at least some influence of old. Exactly! My favorite Abney Park songs -- after about a week of switching between them, Pink Floyd, and Dr. Steel -- are the ones like Dark and Twisty Road and Dr Drosselmeyer's Doll (both from their latest CD). While Airship Pirates is catchy and I love the whole chantey sound, it sounds too forced. It's like they sit down, and say, "Alright, we have to make another obvious steampunk song if we want to keep our image!" and went from there, rather than getting natural inspiration and writing from the heart. I really do like Abney Park now that I'm familiar with the music, but I still feel like they're covering their asses, playing it safe, and making sure that if nothing else, the industrial goth crowd will still like them. I bet if they pulled all the stops and went nuts, they would be amazing.

my turn off to Abney is they used to be goth. I'm not downing goths but I'd prefer to listen to a band who started steam and stays steam.

Lilith of the Black Rose my turn off to Abney is they used to be goth. I'm not downing goths but I'd prefer to listen to a band who started steam and stays steam. That's a little single minded, I mean, fair enough but good bands evolve, they change and try new things, test the waters. Abney Park may have started off as Goth but then again so did alot of similar bands. Steampunk in the music industry is still being defined, I'm not sure that it ever will be because "Steampunk" itself covers a lot of little sub-genres.
You cant just expect a band to do the same thing forever, after a while it'll all just become the same thing.
Im not a huge fan of Abney Park but there are a few songs they have made that I adore, Dear Ophellia is one of them.
