[HELP/ADVICE] Monkey D. Luffy

Okay, so after reading some tuts, I'm trying to make my very first avatar edit, and I chose Monkey D. Luffy. But the part that I'm stuck on, and would like advice on, is the face. First of all, this is where I'm at:

And ummm, this is the kind of face i want:

So umm... Any advice on how to do it? 'Cause his eyes are very simple, just an outline and a dot... But that doesn't really match the gaian style T^T And what color should I do to outline the eyes and mouth? Black is too strong of a color... But dark tan skin color looks weird for the mouth n eyes... Help? I didn't mark the face, so if anyone would want to edit it with an example of how to do this type of face, i would really appreciate it!

I would say using black and simple lines would be okay for this edit because of the character. He's meant to look cartoony, so make it cartoony. If you want to make the eyes not look flat shade the white around the black edges with a little gray. Then they'll look more 3D and still look like an avatar. You could also use gray for the mouth instead of black so that it looks like there is no outline of the mouth, but I'd just got with black personally. Try both and see what works.
