User Image Iroh was content with his day. He hadn’t done anything of interest, finding a nice patch of sun to sit in and listen to the world moving around him. He found a soothing, incomprehensible peace in the flow of nature, and just sitting amidst its movements made the young cub feel serene. He kept his eyes closed for some time, not sleeping in his upright state, but lost in his reverie. He blinked his eyes open, however, when his stomach grumbled.

Sniffing, he wondered where he might be able to get some food. He had only just eaten, so he doubted he could convince someone to hunt for him. Plus, he was too comfortable to really drag himself from this perfect little spot he had found. If he returned to his siblings now, he’d probably have to stay there. As much as he loved them, he did enjoy these moments of quiet and solitude. Sighing, he looked down at his youthfully pudgy, as he thought, stomach as it grumbled again.

“Hmm…” he murred thoughtfully. His eyes were drawn to the ground just beneath him, catching sight of a lone flower he had unintentionally stepped on. Carefully using the tip of his claw to move the flower, he did his best to return it to life. It was just an idle occupation, drawing his attention and keeping it.

After his encounter with Lake, the red male couldn't help but shake his head at the memory of it. To think that there were so many varying personalities within the desert, he'd never get tired of all the new things that he was uncovering.

Vanhi's purple gaze shifted across the golden dunes, thinking about his family. He hoped that they were proud of him...proud of his accomplishment. It had been so hard to fathom that he'd be standing here, in the sand dunes of the Firekin, but he was. It was just something that he'd never forget.

It was during this scan that he had almost missed the pale cub and he had to do a double take. So it was, a little pale cub some distance off. Was it apart of the pride? But it lacked the necessary colors that he knew was customary of the pride, so perhaps he had gotten lost from his mother? But if that was the case, then where was his mother? Not wanting to ponder any longer on the subject, he started to make his way over to the cub, all the more curious.

Sighing, the flower that should not have been there was too squished to be revived. He shook his head at the loss, wondering if he'd ever see something like it again. It didn't mean anything to him, really, but he couldn't help but feel slightly sad and, more ridiculously, a bit guilty by the way it had all turned out.

His ears perked as he heard footfalls near him, though they were dampened by the soft terrain. He turned and blinked, not having an ounce of challenge in his body as he spotted the large male lion. It wasn't difficult to spot the bright red fur, and it never really was. Iroh, on the other hand, had a habit of going unnoticed.

"Hello," he said when the lion was close enough, smiling genially. He was sitting with his paws splayed, looking rather rolly-polly and not in any way combative or on his guard. He never seemed that way, actually, because he liked spending his time being friendly. That didn't mean he wasn't learning how to defend himself, of course. "Who are you? My name is Iroh."

As the red male had gotten closer to the cub, Vanhi had been noticed by the cub's greeting. He returned the cub's smile with a small one of his own as he came to the cub. His purple eyes ran over the cub, noticing that he looked quite comfortable in his current position. "Hello Iroh, I'm Vanhi. It's a pleasure to meet you."

And of course, his curiosity got the better of him as he tilted his head slightly, "Are you out here in the desert by yourself?"

"Vanhi." Iroh repeated carefully, as if trying the name out to see if he liked it or not. He concluded that he did, and he smiled up at the bigger, unfamiliar male, "That's an interesting name. It's a pleasure for me to meet you, too, because I don't see many strangers around here. And you don't look like you come from here, do you?"

He blinked, noticing that he had been asked a question first, and it was rude to ignore it so blatantly. Smiling peacefully, he shook his fur to free it of some clinging sand and pushed his little body into a more direct position, "my family is near by, I just like to come out in lonely areas to keep the lands company." He said, his tone curiously vague.

"I like your white mane," the soft cub said, not making any mention of the red in the other lion's fur.

He shook his head, "No, I'm not from around here. My father is though, which is why I am here. I want to bring honor back to his name by coming back to his birthpride." Vanhi replied softly, he cared deeply for his family. "It's been taking quite a while to get used to walking on the sand. It is much different than walking on the harder ground of the savannah."

And then he tilted his head at Iroh's comment, "Keep the lands company? It is nice to get away and take in the desert's beauty. There is nothing more beautiful than the sun setting in the desert. I didn't believe my father when he told me when I was just a cub, but now I know that he was telling the truth."

The comment about his white made his features soften, "The white is from my mother and my eyes. My mother was mainly white."

"Honor? That's something I'm still learning about," Iroh confessed with a sleepy smile, "but I already believe it's important. There's just so much about it that's complicated, it's hard to know what is honorable to everyone, and what is just honored in someone's head. Or maybe I think too much."

He laughed. He knew he thought a lot, but it seemed like a good thing so far. He loved to learn, and to experience. He wanted to absorb everything he could, and become not only a strong lion, but an intelligent one. It seemed that strength was only truly a sign of power if it was coupled with understanding and thought.

"It is pretty," he said as an afterthought, "watching the way the sand is always moving, and the colors it turns when the sun goes down or comes up. I don't think I'm ever close enough to the sun, though, because my fur never changes color. I kind of wish it would, since it's light like the sand. I wonder if your white would change color?"

With a soft smile Vanhi replied, "It is a concept you learn with age, and something I never fully understood until just recently." But every lion was different, some understood those complicated concepts before others. And Iroh seemed like a lion well beyond his years to the red male.

Curious though, he tilted his head to the side as he thought for a brief moment, "Perhaps my white might change colors, but I don't know. Other than getting dirty, I don't think it's really changed since I was a cub. Why would you want your fur to change colors?"

Iroh nodded slowly, absorbing the older male's words with a peaceful expression on his face. The pudgy lion was serene in his every movement, and he did not rush as he looked around for no discernable reason before looking back at his new companion.

"Well. Because it looks pretty in the sun light," Iroh said with a smile and a shrug. He imaged the setting sun, deep red and purple stretching into the sky and across the sand, changing everything that was normally so yellow into a blaze of reds and oranges, "I wouldn't want to keep my fur a different color, though."

He nodded sagaciously, "I think it's good to like yourself the way you are, and my fur is one of my best qualities, I think. It's warm, and allows me to see when I'm too dirty, and I can blend in with the sand and rocks. Not that I like to hide, but I do like listening to the earth, and it makes me feel closer to it."

He purred, "some time, we should listen to the sands. If you're new here, you haven't done it yet, right? They speak when they move."

His ears flicked at the cub as Iroh spoke. Vanhi couldn't help but feel that the cub was well beyond his years, in the way he spoke and the way he held himself. With a nod, "Your fur is a nice color, it reminds me of the sands when the sun reflects off of it."

And then the cub's question piqued his curiosity as he shook his head, "Oh no, I'm afraid I haven't done it yet. Would you care to show me? It sounds interesting...and fun."

"Okay!" Iroh said, showing more energy in this one word than he had through the entire conversation. He moved off suddenly, pulling himself up a small hill of sand, he looked back and wagged his tail, an indication that Vanhi should follow him. He grinned, a goofy expression, and sat down at the top. He made sure to leave some room for the much large male to join him.

"It's easy!" He called down, some sand rolling down the hill from his paws, "all you have to do is close your eyes and make your body as quiet as you can!"

He closed his eyes and breathed a deep sighed, readying himself but not focusing too much so he could give his new friend enough time to come up and sit down. He just wanted to be calmer, since he had gotten so excited about the chance to show off. Breathing deeply, he smiled serenely.

The red male could feel the cub's energy and Vanhi could feel himself get rather excited as well. He followed after the cub, careful to mind his step and keep an eye on him. Iroh blended in more with the sands than he did.

And then he watched the cub's movements before mimicking them. He laid down next to the cub. Once Iroh spoke, he took it upon himself to do just what he was being told. His purple eyes took one last look at the sands before he closed then. In the darkness, he took a few deep breaths before he calmed himself.

As his ears started to adjust to the quietness, they were starting to feel more acute, like all the little sounds that the desert made were catching up to him.

Iroh didn't speak for a long moment, listening to the desert around them and getting lost for a moment in the subtle, quiet song of the shifting sands. His ears flicked gently back and forth, following the melody and the words he couldn't understand, but some how knew the meaning of. He opened his soft eyes slowly, looking at his new friend to see how he was going.

He spoke quietly, not wanting to interrupt but feeling like he should check in.

"It's like a song, I think. Only without music. Just this feeling in the sound. The desert, I think, is at peace right now. I think it's happy for new members, and just because it's so nice here these days. I think there are good things ahead, don't you?"

He closed his eyes again, breathing in deeply, taking in the familiar scent of the home he loved so much.

With the silence that surrounded the pair, Vanhi closed his eyes and just listened. A couple of deep breaths in and out, he opened his eyes once Iroh spoke. He paused briefly before he nodded, "I'd like to hope so. I know just being able to survive in the desert and find this pride, it brought my hopes up."

His gaze shifted around, taking in the calm of their scenery. He stayed like for a few moments more before he stood up slowly. He didn't want to leave the cub, but he needed to go and hunt. He had promised Karana he would join her. Purple orbs settled on the cub with a soft smile, "Iroh, I must depart and meet up with my friend for a hunt. I hope I see you again very soon, I've enjoyed our time together."

Iroh looked up at his new friend, for it was that easy for him to consider relative strangers friends, and smiled. He knew he should keep the adult lion for too long, so he wasn't upset by the lion making it known that he needed to move on. He stood and nodded, looking bright and content.

"Okay! I hope you have a good hunt," he said honestly, moving and rubbing his pudgy little head against Vahni's leg before padding away, back toward his own den. He should probably be getting back to his family. His tummy was telling him to, in its clear, persistent voice

"I'm sure we'll meet again! I'll listen for the sands to tell me when you're around," he grinned, flashing his teeth, then bounded off over the dunes.
