The change of seasons brought on many things - school, autumn leaves, colds - and August was affected by all of them. He had been holed up in his room for the past two days, coughing, sneezing and sleeping, the victim of something his sister had deemed 'a stupid little head cold,' but was probably something more along the lines of the flu. August was sleeping right now, in fact, but he was restless, his hair forming interesting brown and green hieroglyphics as it fanned out across the pillow with every toss and turn.
His dreams were much more pleasant. It was as warm as summer out, even though the leaves still fell from the tree he was sitting in. If the red ones happened to look a bit too much like wet, dripping blood, August failed to notice.

Galleai loved how, now she had emerged from that dark place she'd been sleeping, there were so many more dreams to visit. It seemed that everytime she closed her eyes she found herself somewhere else, meeting someone else.
This dream was nice. It was warm and, blessedly, dry. It felt a little strange, Galleai didn't know what a fever-dream was but if she had she may have classified this as one such.
She was wearing her customary dreaming form of a large white cat with winged paws and a jewel set in it's forehead. A much easier and more comfortable shape, at least until she got used to her body in the waking world. She was still having trouble getting the hang of that whole walking thing.
Padding on the soft ground, Galleai found the dreamer easily enough sitting up in a tree. She sat below it and looked up, letting the leaves fall down around her and waiting to see if the dreamer would notice her. Something felt not quite right. Maybe it was those red leaves. They felt almost sinister, for some reason.

August caught a flash of white out of the corner of his eye and turned his gaze from the horizon, where he had been watching a pair of what looked like very large black birds as they pecked at something equally indistinguishable and far away. It was strange. Things outside of his immediate vicinity seemed hazy and wobbly, like mirages springing up off of a highway in the sun. He had to admit though, this white cat at the base of his tree was much cuter than the wavy giant crows, and more distinct as well. Much more interesting too, with its wings and jewel. August wished for the briefest moment that he actually knew how to get down from a tree, and suddenly there he was, down, sitting on the ground, still more than a few feet away from the cat in a subconscious act of wariness.
"What's going on?" he asked no one in particular.

"It's okay." Galleai said to the little boy with what could only be a catlike smile. She moved closer to him and butted her head against his arm, demanding to be petted. She didn't like the look of those crows and her voice sounded as if it were faint and echoey to her ears. She didn't know what was going on here yet either, but sometimes if you said something you could make it true, so she repeated herself. "It's okay."

He didn't immediately associate the voice with the cat, but August did reach out and pet the creature, mainly because it was so insistent. He was reminded of his puppy, Pepper, but Pepper was far away now so he didn't think about her for long.
Finally his brain put two and two together and he smiled faintly. Usually it didn't take him so long to figure things out.
"That's you, isn't it? Talking? And this is a dream." But was it hers or his? He got to his feet and closed his eyes, thinking of more pleasant things than giant crows, and when he opened them again, they were on a beach. "Better. Sorry." The sky was purple and the tree that rained intermittent bloody leaves remained, but everything else was almost ordinary, like the boy who dreamed it. How did one introduce themselves to a cat? "I'm August," he said. That would have to do.

"Oh! Well done!" Galleai said when the dreamscape changed. "It's your dream, but most people dont realize they're dreaming while they're doing it. You must be very special." Purring a little with pleasure (she did so love being petted) "I'm Galleai. I like your sky very much." Purple was an excellent color.

August looked down in an attempt to hide the slight blush that stained his cheeks in response to the girl's compliment. He didn't get many. "Well, things like this just don't happen in real life. Or maybe they do, but not to me." Truthfully, with the exception of the one or two very odd things that had happened in his life, August's day-to-day existence was quite boring. Perhaps when he was older he might realize this was because he was constantly privy to his sisters' thoughts, but for now that possible cause of his boredom didn't occur to him. Knowing what the only two people you ever interacted with were going to say before they said it made life less than exciting.
"This is more fun than being awake." August looked up at the sky then back down at Galleai. "Thanks, I like the sky too." He pulled off a shoe and curled the toes of his left foot into the sand. "Are you really here?" August didn't think he had ever had a dream with someone else in it before, or at least someone who appeared to have a mind of their own.

"I'm really here and then again I'm not. I'm sleeping like you, somewhere else." Galleai shifted from feline to girl in a fluid movement that was almost unnoticeable, except for the fact that she was no longer white and furry. "Since it's your dream, you can do anything, you know. You can even fly." She grinned at him. "Flying is really fun."

"Oh," he said as Galleai shifted in front of him. That was... surprising. "Do you do this a lot?" August was just full of questions, but in his experience he had found that asking a bunch of questions was really only fun for him. "Sorry. Forget it. Not important," he said, a slight smile flitting across his face again. He vaguely remembered meeting a girl with wings on her head when he had been smaller. She had given him a pair of his own for a while, but he hadn't been able to fly with them. "Let's try that. Flying." He glanced at a short cliff in the distance, then back at his tree, which he was sort of reluctant to leave. "Do you think we have to be up high to do it?"

Galleai smiled at him. "It depends... some people can get a running start and then just jump into the air. Or you can jump off a cliff or a tree..." She shrugged a little. "You just have to want to do it. Then it'll happen." She crouched down and jumped, somehow managing to hover in the air in front of him. "See? If you just want to do it... you'll find a way to do it. It feels kind of like a tickle in your chest." She held out a hand to him invitingly.
