Whats that now? THERE IS NO Music or Theatre post yet??? this is an outrage!!!! stressed haha...just kidding mrgreen Since I couldn't find one..I thought I'd start a thread here. I'm a musical nut case as any of you will easily figure out... I play the piano, guitar, and I'm going to take up french horn and flute...I also sing... and as musical nut cases should know... Basic Music History is divided into four periods:
Baroque Classical Romantic Modern
I thought I'd focus on Classical for today:
The word classical is often used to describe serious, artistic music that is different from popular or folk music, but Classical also describes a period in music history that begain around 1750 and ended around 1820. Artists, musicians, and architects greatly admired the styles and ideas of ancient Greece and Rome at the time. Ancient Greeks and Romans tried to create elegant, balanced art that was simple in form and structure.
Compared to the previous period, Baroque, melodies became simpler and even shorter. Music often followed symetrical "question and answer" phrases (aka the first and second passage seem like a conversation, one may be loud, the other soft...it creates a pattern) Texture of music was light and clear, the melody was normally set against a chordal accompaniment (homophony) to make it easier to hear harmonic progressions.
Composers focused on phrasing, articulation, and dynamic markings to express contrasts and emotions. The details were written in the music sheets so performers has very clear instructions on how to play each piece. This added variety and spark to their music. Orchestras grew in size and several woodwind instruments were invented. The piano was introduced and replaced the older harpsicord.
Composers earned a living by writing for wealthy patrons and by teaching. Some worked for churches and courts, but others were self employed. This gave artists freedom to compose what they wanted rather than what employees asked for. (Before, they would play for kings and queens...who demanded what they wanted to hear)
Since there were no television, radio, computers, or other modern additions, music was a source of entertainment and public concerts became popular as people had more time and money to attend them.
What went on in the classical period??? ~Benjamin Franklin discovered lighting is electricity ~Captain Cook discovered Australia ~American Declaration of Independence was Written ~Uranus, the planet was discovered ~French Revolution ~Lewis and Clark expedition ~War of 1812 ~Erie Canal
Noted Composers of the time:
~Franz Joseph Haydn ~ Mozart ~ Ludwig Van Beethoven ~ Johann Christian Bach ~ Cleminti
Comments please!!! and if you can...help me find websites where we can sample classical music! or name more composers... heart

Unforgettable in every way, And forever more, thats how you'll stay
www.classicalarchives.com
Or something around that realm. There is music from all eras.
I think classical music really calms me down. In my opinion, it just is music to listen to while you're cooking, or something like that where you don't have to pull your entire concentration on it. That's why, darling, it's incredible That someone so unforgettable, Thinks that I am unforgettable too....

Huge fan of Mozart! One of my absolute favorite composers (favorite one of this time period)! Have you ever seen the movie Amadeus? One of the best movies ever!!! It is a must see! I am an avid singer and take voice lessons. I love the song of Mozart's from The Magic Flute, "Der Holle Rache"! Just listening to the colortura sopranos effortlessly reaching those high F's makes me melt! I am excited because my voice teacher said that after our recital this year, she is going to let me learn that song! YES!!!

Romantic music is by far my favourite. Chopin, Faure, Debussy... their music never fails to inspire and uplift me. I guess being a classical pianist has something to do with it.. I enjoy feeling the drama and dynamic as I play certain pieces. This period also happens to be my favourite for literature, as well.

sweet_melody2 Oh I just love Motzart's Moonlight Sonota. I enjoy the baroque and romantic periods. But my favorite music period is modern, with romantic at a close second blaugh I think you're confusing Mozart with Beethoven dearie.... sweatdrop Mozart was the young genius who died at a young age...and Beethoven is the one who went deaf and composed his "best" compositions at that time...
