I wanted to make a thread about auditioning for something... honor bands, Marching, orch, etc.

Tell your story and if you'd like, say what resulted.

My story...

I was auditioning for this Jazz and Concert band. (Tenor sax and Clarinet)

And we got there about an hour late, so I had to immediately run up there audition!

So, of course my clarinet was ice cold and I got in the solo line. I was so ready, until my mom came upstairs to tell me that I had to get out of line and go audition on my saxophone.

So, I went up with my ice cold saxophone . I was sitting with another Tenor Saxophone girl whom I knew from before, and two guitarists and they were both pretty cool. I think they were Juniors and Seniors.

I waited and went last in the bunch and another girl--- guessing she was a Junior and Sophomore came to audition on the Tenor Sax too.

So I went in, they had me play three scales. The two people auditioning me were a man and a woman. Apparently the woman's name was Nicole (my Sax teacher knows her) and she is a really good Saxophonist.
The man was the late saxophone girl's BD, apparently... I was worried it would give her an edge.

so I did the F scale, D scale and Eb scale...

I played one octave of the Eb scale... and epic failed. XD So he asked me to do the second, which I did. biggrin

I played the F scale...... and messed up so the guy told me to slow down and I played it slower.

Then I started my solo, not paying any sort of attention to the dynamics and I played through it... afew squeaks and a few wrong notes.

Then I had to run, get my clarinet and go back up to do my solo right away.

I couldn't stop my heart from racing... and I played it pretty loud, and the room was echo-y so it sounded very different..... I squeaked on 3rd register D a few times and a few wrong notes too.
Then I went to do my scales which went pretty well!

And I left.

And on Tuesday I got the results from my BD, I'm 5th chair for clarinet and the only Tenor Sax let in at this audition (They kept everyone from last year....)

Please post your stories, I'd really like to know~

All district band tryouts

i got there at about 8:00 to see what my letter was for auditioning
i went through the page and i saw my name the letters "AA" where next to my name
i had to play my Bb, Eb, and chromatic all the way to the high G (Im a clairnet)
which i couldn't get out my last notes uz my clairnets retarted.
so i was in line and my old band directer walked out of the room
Knowing her she probley graded me harder
so i walked into the room played my Bb and Eb scales and SUCKED on my chromatic
(chromatic was worth 20 of 160 points the other scales were 10 each each etude was 50 points a peice and sight reading was 20)

so i played my etudes and i thought i did pretty good and then sight reading
i was so scared
the room montier placed to music on my stand and i was so shocked
the music was so easy
it was a 4-4 time sigintare and all of the notes were natural no accidentals fastest note was a 16th note and there was only 1 of them
i played the music
thought i did good
and left the room
i came back at noon for results
and i didnt make it

i just did SEIBA(for middle school) audition last thursday, first i had to wait 20 min. to just get in the band room(6th grade BD had an advanced 5th grade band) tehn i had to wait 20 more min. because the person auditioning before me was a percusionist so they had to go to the other band room, so i had 40 minutes of worrying. When i finally got to audition i had to play 4 scales and the chromatic, i played C, G, Bb, and Eb. I played C and G perfectly, then i messed up on Bb(even though its supposed to be the easiest) because of having to do 2 octives(im an oboe) then did pretty good with my Eb and messed up a bit with chromatic. Then i had to do my to atudes and almost fell of my chair afterwards because i was so out of breath(they were both long and slow)
And i made it, but i have to do another audition for it in January for it

In our band instead of band geek or nerd, we are band fags. The 2 biggest reasons for this is because there are at least 6 ppl in a band of 40 that are gay or bi and because our band teachers are nuts.
We have cameras filming the audition for no reason but it adds 2 the nerves. Right after the crazier of our 2 band directors turns on the camera, he looks at the person about 2 play and says, "Hi band f**!!" and waves expecting the kid 2 respond and wave 2 the camera.
Anyway afterwards I sucked badly but still better than most ppl. My friend has decided it is because of the extra low cut shirt I was wearing that day 4 the spirit week (we wear costumes). I have decided that since both directors are above 55, I'm creeped out eek

I had to do a Jazz auditiion on Flute. I had to memorize the F scale, it kept messing up. xDDD Then I got it! =] Then Mr.H made me play Bb in front of everyone. Then he made me play Ain't Misbehavin twice because I forgot the long notes.

I don't have any horrible audition stories. My auditions have always been straightforward and fine. Now exams...those are another matter. This is all for trombone.

In my grade 2 exam, the examiner asked for a scale that wasn't on the syllabus, but I was too shy to point it out, so I tryed to play it and it went very very wrong. Then, in a panic, I let go of the slide and the outer slide fell off.

In my grade 4 exam in a moment of insanity I started playing one of my scales and it mutated into greensleaves.

In my first ever exam as well, in the aural texts, he asked me to sing him back a piece of music and I sang mary had a little lamb for some bizzare reason.

Amazingly, I passed all those exams.

Why I Didn't Make All State:
The first noise that came out of my bass clarinet... was a squeak. (Stupid reed was too dry because I was playing on a 5 and I couldn't produce spit to save my life because I was nervous.) So the guy that was recording me peeked around the corner and said "Hey, girlie, you OK?". His voice was soooo strange. So of course, I just started cracking up, and it was all on the recording!! Eheh. I must remember to bring a piece of something to muffle my laugh with - next time...

This past week on saturday I went to the all district try outs.
I was play through my second etude when the most horrible hing happened: A bug flew in my nose and made me sneeze. Now normally, a person would stop, cough off to the side, and play again but I was really into the cadenza and it was at the fastest point and I was really into the music. I compleltly oblterated the note I was on; BADLY. it wasnt even a a minor honk; it was a BLAST. I could hear the judges laughing and all the student behind me. I was so embarassed lol.
But on the bright side, I made it to all reigon tryouts and even beat my section leader in the rankings =D

So I'll prolly have a horrible story to tell when it comes to region next monday but for now here are 2 stories telling of my 07 region tryout and honors band tryout.

Region 07:

So I thought I sounded so good and I thought for sure I would make it into phase 2 however I get into my room and the first note out of my horn is a squeak. well from there it went down hill. You couldn't even tell what I was playing it was so butchered. Well let's just say that I played 2 measures of the 3rd etude and just stood up and walked off. I knew that weather I played it or not I would've made last chair either way.

Needless to say I was last chair of 267 clarinets XD

Honors Auditions:

So we have to try out for the 2 top bands and well I really wanted it and I practiced the audition peices so freking much I had them memorized and low and behold the day of my audition I'm sick. I was so freking upset cause even when I was sick I still beat out half the clarinets and I still got stuck in the lowest band. It wasn't fair.

I'll prolly update this post with my Region 08 audition messups XD

A couple of weeks ago I had an all-state audition. I got there a little early, and I had to wait a long time. I went through my pieces, which sounded fine, and before long I had to go to the performance room. There was a long line, full of extremely nervous people, so I got nervous too.The guy before me walked out, and after he walked away, the two judges started laughing! Then it was my turn...
The scales were perfect, D major and Bb chromatic...
The Lyrical piece was also good, though I messed up the two most important notes...
The technical piece was worse, I messed up a transition line...
The sight-reading was an epic failure. I was so sick with worry that I walked out of the room, and left my folder there!

Turns out that made me Bass Trombonist of the All-State Orchestra, supposedly the highest spot I could audition for!And I'm only in the second-best band at my school! xd

7th grade district:
I had to take the SAT before my audition. It was this Duke TIP 7th grade SAT thing . . google it if you're curious . . anyway . . it took 6 hours. I was a wreck after it. Then I had to go audition, how fun. So I went, played okay to bad on my scales, then came sight-reading. Fail, fail, fail. Halfway through, I was about to start crying, so I just said "Um . . I don't think I can do anymore." and I left and cried for the next three hours. Didn't make it, obviously.

8th grade district:
This audition was more normal. No SAT beforehand, heh. My scales were pretty good, not as good as usual, but not bad. I even saw the judges nod to each other after I played my F scale biggrin . I thought I totally died on the sight-reading. I left, thinking I might've made at least a low chair. Out of the 7 french horns that made it, I was 1st chair! Soo shocked . . and soo happy . . that was one of my happiest days ever . . haha.

EDIT: 9th grade district auditions were today . . (the 13th).
I think I did okay to good. My scales were pretty good, no major errors. I screwed up a bit on my chromatic scale, but that's mainly because up until last night I thought the range was from low F to high F, while it was really from low F to high A. Oh, how fun. So I did well until I got up to A, messed up going down, but got back on track and kept going. Sight-reading was . . eh . . not so good. I kind of got the general idea of the notes and rhythms . . heh . . it wasn't a hard piece, I just hate sight-reading. And there was something in 7/8. I had no idea what 7/8 was. So I just kinda pretended it was in 3/4 still . .
UPDATE: I made 4th chair out of eight! biggrin

If you're reading this and trying out for something soon, I hope you do well heart
