So wasn't sure how long he'd been absorbed with his task. To be honest, he'd never stopped to think about thinking about it. Had he know he'd been working on this since sunrise and it was nearing sunset, he would have just told whoever informed him of it to stop bothering him while he was focusing.
Making a replica of Priderock out of pebbles and sticks required the upmost attention and eye for detail, after all. Shwari was a vicious competitor. Figuratively. No doubt he'd have an amazing specimen himself, and if So's wasn't absolutely perfect, there was no way he would win.
Careful... careful...
The miniature Priderock reached, just barely, above his paw. It was almost complete. Just needed a few more little stones here and there. Carefully, very carefully, So reached over and lifted a stray pebble between his claws. His paw hovered over the side of his creation.
Careful... careful...

Irit knew she probably should have gone back to the den by now. But she was still full of energy and mischief. This was no time to be sitting and hearing the rest of the family talk of their day! No...this was a time when the 'hunting' was best. No one expected a little cub to scare the bejesus out of them this late. And woe on the one who attracted her attention.
Like the poor purpley lion she was creeping up on now. Her face was a mask of cubbish concentration, marred by a gleeful grin. She lived to cause trouble in her opinion...to keep EVERYONE on their toes.
With a cub's attempt at a roar, she leaped. Originally, she'd been aiming for the lion himself...but she had miscalculated and hit the strange thing he'd been making. She landed flat on her belly on the remains with an 'oof' and 'ouch', shaking her head to reorient herself.
"Dung beetle..."

So's cry of dismay would have left Charlie Brown green with envy. No doubt the horrible wail of terror could be heard through all of the Pridelands. Birds even fled from the trees around them in fear at the echoing, "AGGGGH!"
His work! He'd spent forever on this! No way he could redo it in time to such quality! Had he not been three points (rocks) ahead of Shwari, he might have smite the cub. That wasn't to say he still wasn't furious. Oh, he was furious. So furious. No pun intended.
His claws extended and he picked the cub up by the scruff of the neck. It wasn't a violent enough action to cause her any harm. But he did have an extra annoyed growl for her when he lifted her up to his face. "What do you think you're doing?! You've ruined it! What is wrong with you?!"

Irit squeaked as she was picked up, flailing a little before she was met with the lion's face. At that point, she stopped flailing and gave a stern look back. What was WITH this guy?! It was just a buncha rocks and sticks!
"Ruined what? The strange thingy you were making? Pfft." She let her stern look go and rolled her eyes. "To be honest, I was aiming for YOU and not IT...but I got your attention anyways." She giggled and grinned.
"You can always make another one. Maybe better too." This hadn't been the reaction she'd been looking for, honestly...but she wouldn't tell anyone that. After all, everything always went according to plan.

So stared at her. That I-will-end-you kind of look he wasn't true to since he did not, in fact, "end" her and actually did just the opposite. "There is no better," he hissed at her. Stupid kids didn't know perfection when they saw it. Parents these days didn't raise their brats properly. They didn't have manners like his generation.
With that thought in mind, So flung her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes and let her drop. When all else fails? Ignore, ignore, ignore. That's just what he did. Rock by rock he began constructing his project in a futile effort to make it decent enough to win.
His first mistake was assuming the cub would have let him be after that.

Irit yelped as she was tossed over his shoulder. With a 'thump', she landed on the ground belly up. For a moment, she lay there dazed...and then she shook her head and rolled over onto her belly. He did not just...she growled, red eyes narrowed.
She would NOT tolerate such treatment! The cub turned around and readied herself, muscles tensing in preparation....
And then she pounced. This time, she got her target, landing on the purple lion's back. "There is TOO better!" There would always be someone or something better! It's why she worked so hard to be good at what she did! "And tossing me aside like last week's kill is stupid." Oh...she would get her revenge. Yes...yes she would~

To So the growl of a cub was equal in ferocity to the squeak of a hare's kitten. There wasn't much threat there. Plus, what did she weigh, like four pounds? Please. He could have laughed outright when she tackled him. He didn't because he was too busy being annoyed, but he could have!
"No, there isn't." Being mindful of his new, incomplete structure, So stepped back before attempting to rattle around enough the cub would fall. In the event she did, he had plans to squash her into the ground with his paw. That'd show her!
"What do you want, you little brat?"

Irit fell to the ground again, but this time...she was ready. No grown-up was gonna get the best of HER. She scrambled out of squishing range, in case he was gonna sit on her.
"There's always better! You just gotta look for it and try harder!" She practically fluffed up as she held a paw to her little chest. "Like my honey-trap. Just honey alone is wonderful...but add feathers to it, and it becomes a better trick!" She had a sly smile on her face.
"What do I want...why...you've been giving me what I want! A range of reactions I've never seen from others!" Silly, silly grown-up...like all the others, they never quite got it. And of course...by the end of the week she'd started plotting in her mind...he'd give her many more reactions!

What was a 'honey'? So hadn't ever seen it, he didn't know what it was. In terms of caring? Didn't do that either. This little pibsqueak needed to run off to bother her parents or whatever was raising such a little monster.
He stared at her for a while, just letting her answer sink in. Ah, so it was reactions she wanted, was it? Well then. He turned back to what he was doing and ignored her.
Just ignore her.

So it was that game, hm? Irit just smiled and sat there, looking sweet and innocent to anyone who didn't know better. She could wait. And sometimes, just being there drove others bonkers. Oh yes...Irit would wait and watch.
And then she could run home and hide behind Tama or Dari. Whichever was home and closest.

If there was one thing So was good it, it was ignoring someone. It was something he'd practiced. Sort of. If you counted him being bothered by his siblings back when he was her age and they hadn't lost all hope of drawing his attention away from his games only to be ignored by him practice.
Slower, more carefully, he rebuilt the mini-priderock and when it was finally down, stepped back to admire it. Psh. She was wrong. The first had been better. There was no better.

Waiting....waiting....Irit huffed when he 'finished' what he was working on. Now that it was finished...she could see what it was supposed to be...And that, like every other grown-up she'd known except Tama's cheetah friend, he was missing something.
Of course...she was debating whether to say anything or not. After all...boys had their little ego problems and when it got thoroughly shattered...things went wrong. Irit did NOT need to try and outrun a grown-up.

So had a problem all right. Ego? Sure, it could be that. Mostly, though, it was he had no skill in multi-tasking. This, and all of the games, absorbed every ounce of concentration and until he was finished there was no world outside of them. Sometimes he forgot things. Like that there were annoying cubs in this pride.
When he turned around suddenly he remembered.
"You're still here," he flatly noted.
It was not a question.

Irit just grinned. "Yup. You're SO~ interesting, that I just couldn't help sticking around." The tone of her voice was somewhere between sarcastic and innocent. "So WHY were you so intent on your...replica being so perfect?"
Which it wasn't anymore. Period. Boys had such horrible observational skills.

"It's for the sake of competition. Nothing you would understand being young and stupid and annoying." Mostly the last two. Especially the second if she thought she was getting anymore information out him. Outsiders knew he and Shwari played games. That was all they needed to know. "Now, go away and bother your parents."
