A stream of sunlight found its way through the shielding limbs of the bending trees and into Amalahle's eyes. She squinted and stretched, a small grunt releasing itself from her throat. She relaxed herself and sighed. She felt for a moment that she didn't want to wake up. She wanted to stay there beside Chardon forever, resting in their home together...

Last night had been the best night of her life. All of her blackmailing and manipulating had paid off in the end. Chardon was completely under her power. He loved her. It was all so perfect...

Ama rolled over and reached for her mate, wanted very much to cuddle against him.

Her paws touched air.

Eyes snapping open wide, Ama stared at the empty space beside her.

Chardon wasn't there.

He would laugh, but he was a bit scared that Ama would hear the noise and therefore know exactly where to find him. Chardon wasn't scared of Ama, oh no.

Not now after he had managed to sneak under her ever-present radar and run away.

The plan had been ingenious. Ama never slept, so therefore, Chardon could never run away at any time they were together. Which was all the time, since she refused to let him out of her sight even for a moment. Thing is, if Chardon is doing all the sleeping, he would be more energetic and awake than she would. So how does one wear a blackmailing, sly, conniving lioness out?

Simple: you sleep with her.

And oh, was she out like a light after that. He let himself have a chuckle as he sprinted across the sand, having left the jungle leaves far behind. He had to admit: all those times of flirting and leading on those other pride girls had paid off for that night's experience. It wasn't the worst he had been through, but it wasn't the best either.

Still. It had served it's purpose.

And now he was free. He laughed.

Ama's heart was pounding loudly, blood pumping in her head. Her body was boiling hot in shock and nervousness. Her breaths were quick and panicked. She stood up and spun around in a circle in the den, searching it from all sides. No Chardon. The adolescent ran out into the open. She darted through trees to the left, returned to the clearing, then darted to the right, came back, and stood still in front of the den.

"Chardon?" she called loudly, anger masked behind a sweet voice. Surely he was nearby...He had just gone hunting...

Hadn't he?

Finally, he thought he was far enough away for a small rest. Chardon trotted to a stop nearby some boulders and rested against one of the bigger ones, catching his breath. He hadn't run so far and so fast in a long time.

He was free, but now he didn't know what to do. He had plotted his escape for a while. That had been a goal. Now...what was his goal?

He didn't know.

He could try to backtrack around the jungle and find Cala. But then he realized it would be better for the both of them to simply not be together any more. Look what their relationship had got them: trouble. So much that it had ended up tearing them apart anyway. Chardon frowned at himself. He had promised her that he would never leave her. And it looks like he had to break that promise.

No matter how many times she called for Chardon, the only answer she got was her own echo; a cruel, taunting echo.

Ama bent her head down low, hackles raising and lips curling to show glinting fangs. Her eyes flickered with hatred and rage. "Chardon..." she hissed through her clenched teeth, eyes flashing dangerously. He had left her? Had it...Been his plan the whole time? Of course...She had fallen asleep. Even last night had been a part of his plan. Last night...

He tricked her.

Sucking in a sharp breath through her teeth, Ama roared into the sky, releasing all of her building anger.

Amalahle ALWAYS got what she wanted. She wasn't about to let some pompous male rub her face in the dirt and take off like that.

The lioness didn't even take one last glance at her "home" before running out into the wilderness in search of Chardon.

A faint roar that pricked up Chardon's ears let him know that Ama had woke up. He sighed, taking only a moment more before he was about to run off into the distance again.

Wait.
If she came out of the jungle and saw him running, she would give chase and come after him. She would know where he was, and would keep him in her sights at all time.
But if he stayed where he was, behind this rock, maybe he could simply hide from her. She'd smell him, of course. Maybe just think that he'd stop to rest here and then follow a scent and go after him.

If she even made it out this far. The jungle was a long way away in the distance. He could see green, and trees, but that's it.

He debated again in choosing his decision, wasting precious minutes.

Ama ran through the thick trees and vines, powerful young muscles rippling under her coal fur and grass torn from its roots flying up behind her. There was no doubt that this lioness was on the hunt. She breathed even, paced breaths through her clenched teeth, jaw shuddering with each quick step she took.

'You won't get away,' she thought to herself. 'I'll find you.'

She breathed in through her nose, scenting the air. Her eyes flickered. She smelled him. He had been that way. Changing her direction more to the left, she quickened her pace. Her head was flooded with Chardon. Unfortunately, so was her nose.

His scent was all over her body.

Cursing under her breath, Ama tried desperately to smell him in the air. All it took was one whiff; one strong whiff and she could locate him. But if he had left when she fell asleep, he could be miles away. She had a lot of ground to cover.

But she intended to cover that ground fast.

He knew she could run fast; that was the only problem. But he could run faster. With a quick glance around, and back to the jungle, he took a breath and started to run again.

Chardon ran straight, loping as quickly as he could without expelling too much energy. His paws slammed down on dirt rocks, crushed them, and kept moving. He did not stop again after that short rest at the rocks. Even that one would probably cost him; once she found that, it would be a clear shot at following him.

Great. Just what he needed.

His breaths were deep and timed evenly. His pace was one to be admired, for he made his gait look easy to everyone else. Finally in the distance, he saw something that could help him.

A stream.

Her breathing was heavier now; slower. Her limbs were trembling with each step she took. She felt herself grow weaker and weaker. Her fast-paced running was turning into a fast walk. Ama sneered at herself, angry at her weakness. She had been too hasty. Bolting off into the wilderness as fast as one could run was not a good idea. Now she was exhausted. Her mother was always telling her to learn patience, but she never really got around to it.

Ugh, her mother...Ama glowered and hissed those thoughts away. She tried very hard to pick up her pace again, but once she had slowed down, it was impossible to speed back up.

Had she lost?

Had Chardon won?

Did this mean he was the one with all the power?

What did that make her?

Was she weak?

"No!" Ama hissed to herself. She breathed in deeply again, pace growing ever slower. Her mind whirred with thoughts and she contemplated life on her own. What if...What if she was pregnant? She'd have to raise cubs on her own. But no, she couldn't have been pregnant. There was no way.

Those thoughts fueled a new fire within the adolescent and she was off at top-speed again. But her body told her it wouldn't last long.

His paws and legs cooled in the water for a moment as he half-lay, half-stood in the small stream. They were going to be immensely sore later, and he couldn't afford to trip up later if Ama kept pursuing him. Which, of course, she would. So he need to soak his tired limbs now, while he still could.

Plus the water should wash away his scent for a good amount of time. The water on the sand would dry soon under the hot sun, and he would get away clean. No pun intended.

He looked back towards the way he came, breathing deeply, and squinted to try and look for a black shape on the sand. He couldn't see anything. Good.

Chardon would think about everything that had transpired later. He couldn't let his mind wander. He had to focus on running, running. If he didn't run, he wouldn't have the chance to think later.

So he started running again, abandoning the kind stream in favor of a more sheltered area far away.

A sharp pain shot through Ama's left flank and she cried out, tripping and stumbling to a halt. Her muscles felt like they were on fire. Her legs were frozen in place. She couldn't take another step. She was panting heavily, eyes hot from the strain of her hard work. Her whole body shuddered with each deep breath.

Was that it?

Was it over?

"N-No..." she gasped, shaking her head slowly and staring ahead. Her face was hard with hatred. She would find Chardon. She vowed to. One day, she would find him and get her revenge. He would pay for leaving her alone. If she had cubs, it would be because of him. But gods help her...She would NOT raise those cubs alone. Be it Chardon or someone else, Ama would not go through it alone, of that she was sure. Chardon would pay dearly for deceiving her.

She would never stop chasing him until she found him.

"I swear..." she breathed hoarsely. "I will find you and make you pay."
