The Book; Avery grew up with a negligent father. He used to be abusive to Avery's mother, but she died from overdose of her sleeping medication when Avery was ten. Her father, in shock presumably, went into a catatonic state. After about six months of Avery's saved up birthday money (About 200 dollars) and the money Avery's mother had saved up for a chance to leave the town (About three thousand, Avery's mother told her all about it but never actually did it), Avery's father began going to work again. When he came home he'd collapse on the couch and leave her to her own. Avery spent her days studying to be the best, so that if her father did go back to the way he was, he wouldn't hit her as much. She began volunteering at the local hospital, and found that she could connect with the kids who were more unfortunate than her. As she volunteered and studied, she got a letter from Ulysses High. She was ecstatic and has worked hard during her time at the school.
The Act; Avery is very withdrawn. She feels very uncomfortable talking to people, fearing that she won't live up to expectations. She is very hardworking and is a perfectionist. If she gets any lower than an A on anything, she beats herself up about it. She walks through the day with a pair of headsets on, hoping that the music will drown everyone else out. She loves playing with her hair, but usually ties it in a ponytail for school.

The Book;Alli has officially decided to hate men. She's been rejected so many times, it doesn't matter much anymore. She won't have another boyfriend. It's useless to even try.
Alli has a mother, yes, and she used to have a father. But she doesn't. Her father was killed by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He had been visiting in the two towers on September 11, 2001, when the plane crashed into it. He died in the flames.
Alli and her mother don't talk about the accident except on the 11th. Her mother is starting to date men again, which bothers Alli, but there's not much she can do.
The Act; Alli is fairly withdrawn now. She used to be bold, but now she walks through the hallways alone, eats lunch alone, and basically avoids contact with people in general.

The Book; Alex has grown up never knowing misfortune or hardship. He has it all, Looks, and smarts, girls, wealth. He has spent off of his teenage years wooing women for the fun of it. Believe it or not though he has always ended every relation ship just after he gets what he wants, a confession of their undying love. He ends ever relation ship the same way, “I’m sorry but you’re not really my type.”
The Act; Outgoing, sweet, funny, or at least he seems to be this way. Actually he is cool, calculating and one minded. He sets goals and plays games.

The Book; Matthew's never been one to talk much about his past, his father and mother didn't exactly plan to have him per say, he was more or less the 'mistake' of the family. He was an only child, which he was thankful for since his parents could barly take care of him, let alone another child. If anything he was obident, he did what they said, in hopes they might help out with his money for college/univiersity. But his father was to drunk, and his mom was to busy trying to fend off his father, they didn't care about him. So when he told them he'd gotten a socolar ship, now this was when his mom had given up to and was drunk along side his idotic male parental. They threw bear cans at him and told him to 'hurry up and get the ******** out.' He gladly...Followed this order, with the scolarship tied down, he was off, without worry of facing his parents anymore.
The Act; Matthew comes off as a witty, sarcastic student, he's shy, even though he enjoy's the occasional flirt, he doesn't mind showing his sexy side, but perfers sometimes to keep to himself so his grades don't slip, affraid his scolarship will be ripped from his finger tips and he'll be sent back home. Matthew alos has his headphones permenatly attached to his body.

The Book; Becky grew up very rich and spoiled. Every birthday she had she always got a million dollars added to her bank account. She was always popular because of her money more so than her personality. People hated her deep down inside, and because she knew that, she'd flaunt her money around just to make them stay. And of course whenever anything went wrong she always ran to daddy, her never ending credit card.
The Act; Becky is very whiney and a little bit annoying. She isn't self-centered but she's not selfless. She's sort of an airhead but she can understand a little bit of things. She loves a lot of pink and secretly wishes she could just be that girl who everyone loves instead of the girl with the whiney voice.

The Flavor; Coca Cola
The Book; Darren grew up with his overbearing, pushy father and secretly alcoholic mother in a high class side of town. His father pushed him into the world of sports and has been living vicariously through Darren even since, that's why Darren is at the academy in the first place. It was his father's dream school. Darren worked hard to become captain just to appease his father; his real interests lie in becoming a social worker.
The Act; Darren's a nice boy, the kind your mother would want you to date, but he wouldn't accept your offer if you tried. He feels that a relationship at this point in life wouldn't last; he'll be your friend in a heartbeat though. Darren's a sensitive kid and really isn't a fan of the circulating rumors concerning his sexuality, but he doesn't feel that he has to prove himself to anyone (except his father). While not outgoing, Darren is certainly not withdrawn; he'll approach someone usually if they seem upset or sad in an attempt to cheer them up.
