Chardon was finally free.
It had only been a couple days since he had finally left Ama, but in those days, he had never been as alive as he was now. The male could do anything he wanted without having the worry of looking over his back, double-checking for watching dark eyes. The very eyes that were usually accompanied with a slinky, confident smile.
He shuddered, pushing the memory out of his mind.
His paws led him past a handful of boulders that surrounded a small pool of drinking water. After a moment he decided that a drink wouldn't be so bad, and he could rest for a while. He backtracked and trotted to one side of the pool.
Chardon lowered his head to the water and began to lap up the liquid, happy with the cool temperature on a nice day such as this.

Perhaps it was the heat that brought the brown lioness out from hiding- or maybe she… for once wanted to take in the fresh air. Who knew—Koy wasn’t easy to read at all and as of late kept to herself. She had made it a point to move away from her family a while ago—move away from her pride, the place she was born in.. all to get away from her past troubles and memories. Even her own son left her when he was old enough. But maybe that was for the best, she was very young when she birthed him after all. Too young in fact, maybe that’s why her family started to cling so tightly to her. Maybe. Sighing deeply the brown lioness slowly trotted to a near by waterhole; the day was hot and she needed a drink.

His ears perked up as the sound of footsteps neared. Char's tongue slipped out of its cave and licked his lips, cleaning his muzzle of the water droplets from the lake. He needed to be looking his best, just in case there was some pretty girl in the area. You never knew, right? Always best to be prepared.
Speaking of pretty girls...
A brown lioness trotted into view. His eyes were instantly drawn to her form, and he watched as she approached the pool. It didn't seem like she had spotted him yet. She looked like she could use a drink as well.
"Come forward, lady," he called out in a smooth voice. "Take a drink. It is a hot day; the water is quite cool." His smile was easy and friendly.

“I would assume so.”
She gave him a nod, gazing at him with narrowing eyes at first, though her eyes soon found a kinder look as she lowered her head to take a drink. Her eyes closed softly as she lapped the water up slowly, taking her time to indulge. He seemed well, the male that spoke to her at the waterhole, but she was still uneasy.
Tilting her head upward she stood still for a long second before speaking again; her deep brown eyes easy; soothing almost.
“My name is Koy, not Lady.”

"Chardon," he returned in kind. "A pleasure to meet you, miss Koy." He figured giving an elegant bow would be kind of over-doing it a bit, so he opted for a regal nod instead. It got the point across all the same.
"May I ask what you're doing out on this fine day?"
Sometimes, Chardon could push it a little. He didn't know when to stop, at times, and there was an ominous feeling in his belly that this might be one of those times. He would be so caught up in pretending that he would lose sight of himself, and therefore wear his mask during the whole encounter.
Realizing this, he frowned at himself and sat down to ground himself. The over-friendly smile was replaced with a simple, almost sheepish one. Apologetic, in a sense.

“Chardon.”
Koy spoke out slowly, as if to get the pronunciation just right.
“Lovely name.”
At that she sat down too and shrugged at his question, her tail curing along her lower paws.
“I guess the sun called me out of hiding. It is a lovely day after all.”
She was feeling better about him now, she didn’t feel so uneasy, not like before. Her ears twitched as she smiled too, though it was slightly forced.
“Or---Perhaps--maybe it was just fate calling me here to find you, you never know.”

"Thank you. It means 'thistle,' or so my sister told me." He chuckled, ignoring the wince his heart gave at the mere mention of his beloved Cala. "Does Koy have a meaning as well?"
It was indeed a lovely day out. It was nearing the time of the cold season, but not so fast that the leaves had completely abandoned their trees and the winds had returned to rush on the earth. Nor did the cold temperatures decide to return as they did the year before, and the year before that. Not yet, at least. The sun was shining and it was warm enough outside for a good long walk. Which added another reason to the list of why this time of year was Chardon's favorite.
"Fate," he laughed. "I'm not sure I believe in such a thing. Many things have happened to shatter that belief in my life. Then again..." he trailed off, thinking of some of the more recent events. He didn't really notice her forced smile. "Then again, it could be fate after all."

“I do not think my name has meaning; or at east I didn’t have anyone to tell me it did when I was small.”
She answered his first question with a sight nod, her eyes seemed to swell with emptiness as she spoke of her name; her past. Something lingered deep within her too, something she wished she could forget but she knew she never could… or would.
“Really now? I guess you could say I use to be a strong believer in fate; I had a friend once tell me all things happen for a reason, the good-the bad-and the ugly.”
Her eyes laced along his as she spoke.

"Oh. Well, we'll just have to come up with a meaning for it, then, won't we?" he suggested with a slight twinkle in his eye. "It could mean water, or grace, or kind, or..." That was the part where she started to come up with nouns or adjectives by herself.
Her eyes were a pretty brown, he just realized. Chardon shook himself and concentrated on the conversation. He was so easily charmed; perhaps that was a flaw.
"Really? That makes sense, actually. I like that kind of thinking. Everything happens for a reason, no matter what that 'thing' is, and in the end, hopefully, it will all be good again. I added that little end piece in there." His smile widened into a truer grin. "Thank you."

“Maybe my name can mean something like… “undiscovered.”
She spoke out to his ideas, smirking somewhat. Sure, they were nice… but Koy was in no way graceful; she didn’t care too much for the water or wet climates and felt it would be a lie to call herself kind all of the time.
“You are welcome, but I can’t say I said that to you to make you feel better or take what I said to heart; it was just something that stuck with me through out my cubhood; and inside I guess it’s what’s keeping me strong.”
She smiled at him- for real this time.
“Sometimes words like this can save a life, I have been told.”
Again, the lioness smiled, her tail batting from side to side.
“So tell me, why are you out here all alone?”

"Undiscovered," he repeated with a nod. Somehow it fit. Even though he didn't know her very well. "That's a good meaning. I like it." His smile widened.
But he laughed at her remark that what she had said was not meant to be taken to heart the way that he had. "No, I understand that. But I had not heard the ways of the world put in such plain words before. It made sense to me. You do seem very strong, and in that way I admire you, I suppose. I've had to be strong for a while, and I wasn't sure how long I would last by myself."
The trouble with the past is that if you don't forget it entirely, if you don't shove it behind you and completely ignore it, it comes back to bother you from time to time. He needed to be strong so he could forget. Cala was forever lost to him, and he hoped her life continued on a happy note, without his love. He would save it for someone else and hoped she would move on and do the same.
"I'm out adventuring," he confessed with a smirk. "I've never been so far away from my desert pride. I had to cross through that big jungle a ways a way, but I'm out to see the world and meet who I can. So far, it's been pretty interesting."

“This place is wonderful; and adventuring sounds lovely. I wish I had the guts to do that. I really just left my family not too long ago, and that was hard on me… but I’ve become use to being alone. Things start to become… real when you are alone, you get to know yourself a lot better, I think.”
She blushed and smiled at him, feeling rather silly for even bothering him with her words.
“Simple… is best. Why color coat or lace words with false meanings when everything... Really is just simple, when it comes down to it.”
She sighed.
“Or at least, I’d like to think that the world isn’t so bad, and everything wasn't made just to be a bother or stressful; I’d like to think that… life is simple and we make it hard, or harder than it really should be.”
She ended with a nod.
“I’m sorry! I don't mean to bother you with my nonsense.”

He laughed, completely becoming at ease with this new friend. She wasn't all that bad; her sweet nature was finally coming out to play. And his frontal mask was receding to show his inner gentleman.
"No, don't worry about it! Your words aren't nonsense." His reassuring smile let her know the truth in his words. "I enjoy listening to other people's opinions and thoughts. It lets me know how they think, and how I can support them if they need it.
"That said, I agree with you on simplicity. It's really not necessary to beat around the bush (as they say) when you're trying to tell someone something. You should just come out and say it. It's simple. Most of the time. We do make it harder than we need to; you're also right about that."
Then an idea popped into his head. He wasn't sure if she would accept his invitation, and perhaps she would for only a while, but it would be better than nothing, that's for sure.
"I was wondering--and this only just occurred to me--if you'd be interested in traveling with me? You have left your family, and you don't have to go far with me if you don't want to. But it's a tough road alone and I'd enjoy the company very much."

“Really? Don’t think you’d grow bothered of me after a few hours, do you?”
She laughed her brown eyes narrowing to fine slits. Her lean frame shifted as she sat in thought for a few seconds, pondering his words, his offer.
“If you think you’ll be able to stand me, I’ll join you. At least for a while..”

He made a face at her. "Now why would I get bothered after a few hours with you, hm? You can't be that bad. I've experienced worse, promise." Chardon gave a wink.
A companion! This was exciting; it had been ages since he had walked with someone he actually liked.
"Great!" he exclaimed with a grin. "We'll be off as soon as you're ready." He was a desert lion. He could live off a few drinks of water. But they might need to hunt some animal down, or something, to eat. His stomach was going to start yelling at him soon.
