(( This takes place before Bracken has met up with Basil, but after he's met with Wildcraft. ))

A dead hatchling.
The truths he'd learned from digging around were not what he'd been expecting. Especially not about the things he was accustomed to- Bracken was young and eager and as green as a new fern. But Wildcraft had said it himself, and nearly confirmed all of the Seeker's suspicions with one swift visit.
The Elite could not be lying.

Out of options, Bracken decided to visit one of the only people he could assume were attached to the whole incident. Someone he'd visited before- that Gatherer- No, Forager, he corrected. Her name was Bushfire, wasn't it?

He paused on his perch, and gave a loud hoot from the fringes of Bushfire's territory, hoping to catch her at home. There was quite a bit to talk about, and Bracken intended on getting a full story.

((Post Dodger, but pre Basil/Fiercefire/Fireflight))

Despite her initial determination, Bushfire was not having second thoughts about seeking out her ex-mate. While her encounter with Dodger was still fresh in mind, the idea of a confrontation was no longer as appealing as it had been hours before. She'd taken the time to hunt down a good meal and her perched herself down to tend to her territory's needs as she pondered her next move.

The Forager had been busy checking the fruits a random tree had produced when the loud hoot reached her ears. A frown covered her features, for she knew that hoot very well indeed; how could she not? It was the hoot of the Sentinel that had started it all... Bracken, if she recalled correctly. If he was back, it meant that he had more pieces of information, likely ones he wished to share with her. Something within her told her that whatever it was that Bracken wanted to tell her, she probably did not want to know. Regardless, it would have been rude to send him away and thus, the female lifted her head, sending back an answering call and permission to approach.

She hoped to Noctus he wasn't bearer of any more grim news.

Bracken found her quickly this time, remembering the lush, familiar territory with all its oddities. If such a place had been closer to Deep Woods, he probably would have challenged her for it.

He perched a ways from her, a little out of breath from flying so hard.
"Bushfire," he greeted, trying to smooth down his feathers and relax. The second his yellow eyes landed on her, he was struck again by how... "pure" she looked- there wasn't a tinge of dye anywhere on those feathers, and he knew only Sentinels who were truly proud of how they looked kept themselves that way.

Curious, that Basil was much the same, and they were separated for an indiscernible reason.
"How are you this evening?"

"Bracken," she greeted back at him, pulling herself back into a more comfortable perch. While it was true he'd been the bearer of horrible news in the past, it was also true that she would have remain in the dark if it hadn't been for him. It was a double edge sword, no doubt, but still, she was mildly grateful for the information he had once offered her. She was no longer the babbling mess he'd last seen her at, but rather, looked rather cool, even determined (she was still trying to rough up the courage to go after Basil herself after all), "Not particularly well, seeing as how I've learnt you were undoubtedly right and that scoundrel of an ex-mate I had practically dumped me, leaving me back here to clear up the mess and then ran off to court a bloody, daft Mist whom probably has no clue what happened back HERE."

There was a decidedly large amount of bitterness in her words; in fact, as soon as she began to talk, the Forager began to puff out in clear indignation, "He's rushed off to mate a Mist and risked creating problems! The same problems that happened back here and that he was so quick to ignore and not even bother to fight for!" noticing she was probably making no sense, she calmed herself down, cosing her eyes as she took a deep breath, "But I digress; what brings you here? Something tells me it's not my food."

He watched her curiously, surprised- never in all his time had he encountered someone like this, who would simply give him information and talk to him as if he were a friend. He'd always had to dig for it, wheedle his way into a Sentinel's good graces, or outright use scare tactics to get what he wanted.
"Is... is that so," Bracken said, at a loss for words at first. He took a moment to regain his composure, thinking of why he came.

"The same problems that happened 'back here'?" he repeated- and he could only hope it meant what he thought, a clutch of abberants! But between two pure individuals like themselves, what could that possibly mean? His pale eyes lit up.
"Ah, well, there has been an investigation of a dead chick. I'm looking into the situation, and..."

He paused for dramatic effect, "You wouldn't know anything about that, would you?"
PostPosted: Tue Nov 25, 2008 11:52 am

A dead chick.

The words rang out in her mind over and over; it wasn't like she'd thought it'd remain in the dark for ever. Not really. The past simply had a way of catching up to you; it was something Bushfire had discovered over the past few days. It came back and bit you right in the tail feathers when you least expected. The sad fact was that she had no real way out of the whole ordeal. A lie was not an option; her own pride would not let her get away with that. Hide it and hope others didn't notice? Sure. But not lie. She would never be able to lie about what had happened if outright asked.

It was time to own up and face the proverbial music. It was time for her to pay for what had happened and for what she'd been responsible for, so long ago. The Forager huffed slightly, her feathered coat fluffing up, only to deflate back down as she sunk into herself, "That," she murmured, "Would be my baby."

Letting out a sigh, Bushfire closed her eyes firmly till she saw star behind them. When she opened them back up, she turned them upon the Seeker, "Basil was my mate back then. Our families set us up together; two respectful pure blooded Wildtype sentinels. Unrelated, to continue the line. Just like it should be," a wave of her wing signalled the fact she had been fine with an arranged mating, "Things went well. We were trilled when I laid our first clutch. Two glorious eggs. Beautiful eggs that would contain beautiful, pure, Wildtype chicks. I was sure of it," folding her wings back in, Bushfire continued, her features now stormy once more, "But no. When they hatched, one was still born. The other... the other... it had the white sickness, surely it would not survive, oh the disgrace! I could not understand it! How could that have happened? We were both perfectly bred!"

Her head nodded towards her right, "The tree we used is a small distance away from here. Anyhow. It was disgraceful and we.... decided that the chick had to go. Family pressure was horrid at the time and we could not keep the chick hidden; such an abomination, we thought! We decided together that we would... save it a life of tragedy. who would ever want that chick? But when the time came I couldn't do it. I could not kill my baby," if anything, it was clear the past events still had her wounded, "Basil did it, in the end. He did what I could not. When the deed was gone, he left. He flew away without so much as a glance back," here her eyes became fierce again, "And now he's mated the Mist and risking a repeat of the events!"

He couldn't believe it. Or, perhaps he could.
So this was what it was all about. That dead chick... that dead chick had lead him back to here, to the final piece of the story, and his Seeker intuition had not been wrong. He felt incredibly proud of himself.

And really, Bracken felt that he could understand, or at least sympathize with her. He knew there had been something more to the heritage between them- and with pressure like that, having an abberant clutch of all things? This is why he was not a parent. He didn't see much wrong in Bushfire's decision, because truly, getting rid of abberants was just for the good of the Clan. He was only sorry that it was a crime.

"I see..." he muttered, taking it all in. That last bit struck a cord in him, and he looked back towards her, frowning.

"So... it's Basil's fault, is it?" Bracken said slowly.
He was not surprised. In fact, his heart swelled with savage joy. He just needed another reason to hate Basil, and Bushfire was giving him a perfect route. That male was the source of all the problems- he was the source of everyone's problems- even Fiercefire, that daft Mist...

"You only did what you could," he continued, gaining speed, "You were only doing what was good for the Clan! And even then, your love for your chick stopped you."

The more he spun the tale, the angrier he got.
"And it was Basil who betrayed you, killing that poor-" he nearly gagged, "... aberrant... chick. Killing it without so much as a second glance, and then flying off to court that Mist, obviously just to spite you! But it was not your fault- it was his."
PostPosted: Tue Nov 25, 2008 12:59 pm

It was only a matter of time before she would be judged for her crime, she knew it, but still, letting it out felt like a load off her shoulders. No more secrets to keep, no more secrets to hide. This was for the best, Bushfire was sure of it; she would pay for what she'd been a part of and the scars would heal over with time, right?

"We were both to blame; it was our joint decision in the end. Even if he was the one to do the deed... it was my idea too. I just couldn't do it," she bristled then, "What angers me is that he folded under the pressure. He refused to fight it... he refused to fight for me, he simply flew away without a second glance back! And now he's willing to fight for this Mist with whom he will create Aberrant eggs! The shame of his line! I can not even begin to imagine what it is his parents think of him! The coward! Nothing but an Owl!"

She was forced to pause and shake her head as he continued, "He merely did what I asked him to. I just... I just can't believe he could do it. How could he, when I could not? Oh, that was both of our faults, even if I did not do the deed, however," again her eyes flashed with fire, "I never told him to leave, or to run off and court a Mist, of all sentinels. I wanted him to fight for me, for us... am I really just not worth the bloody fight? He seems to be fighting just fine for the Mist! The bloody idiot ran away at the first sign of trouble! THAT is what angers me!" the rage ebbed away again, leaving her bitter once more, "Meanwhile I'm still stuck here, living in the past, protecting the territory I held with him. What ever for? He's never coming back. I don't WANT him back. What the hell am I even doing?" another shake of her head as Bushfire adjusted her pose on the branch, "Besides, the truth is out now. I can hide it, but not lie if asked. If there is an investigation... everyone will know what I hatched and what I did. My line will be shamed, surely!"

"Indeed..." Bracken said, but he was far past listening to her. He'd convinced himself that Bushfire only had a small part to play- Basil was the one that did it, Basil was the one that created all the problems with his foolish actions, and that was the end of it. The Seeker was less interested in Bushfire's personal drama than he was the drama of the chick- it could build a good case against the Woodworker, something strong enough to ruin his courtship and get him out of the territory. And possibly, stop any hatchings of future abberants.

"Indeed, what he did was very wrong, though I do not blame you for the hatchling," Bracken tried to choose his words carefully, "However, I believe you should continue your duties here..."

He needed Bushfire in the same place. He needed to keep her as a witness, or at least a reference, and having her move around would hurt more than help him. The Seeker preened a spot on his wing, thinking. When he eventually turned back to her, he looked crafty- he had an idea to keep here there, perhaps, for a price.

"Your line would be shamed," he repeated, "Ah, perhaps we can come to an... arrangement, about that?"
PostPosted: Thu Nov 27, 2008 5:38 am

"My duties here?" she seemed perplexed; well, of course she would continue her duties here. Even though it was true that this had been their territory, she had worked hard to make it into perfect foraging grounds. She could not abandon them in order to go seek out a better territory, after all. It was not in Deep woods, true, but the territory was large and produced enough food to cover her quota and get her some interesting food exchanges; there was no real way she'd ever leave.

In fact, as soon as the whole ordeal with Basil blew over, Bushfire would probably seek out a good Hunter she could work with to keep the grounds free of vermin; it would be a pretty good deal to any Hunter, for it was likely they'd easily meet their quota hunting within her territory, "I would never dream of leaving my territory," she told the Seeker, her plumage fluffing out as she spoke, "I put too much work into it to go ahead and leave, Basil or no Basil."

Sinking back into herself, Bushfire let out a sigh, her tufts lowering from their previously perked position, "Shamed indeed," she shook her head, but stopped mid motion to blink at the seeker, "An... arrangement?" a pause as she turned the word around in her mind. Allowing her eyes to narrow a notch, the female shifted her weight, "What kind of an arrangement would you propose?"

"Ah? That's good," he seemed surprised- but really, Bracken was just glad she wasn't going to do anything foolish. She was an important piece to this whole story, and if she was thinking of moving... it would all go to Noctus in a basket with trying to keep tabs on her.
This way, he could report to the Elites without having to fish for excuses.

"Right, well..." Bracken seemed to pause. Was there any real need now, to go through the trouble of an arrangement? It was going to be tough, and there was no guarantee. He mentally cursed and blamed the Forager for being such a good listener- if only she had glossed it over...

"I might be able to get you out of such blame," he said grudgingly, "For a price. Unless you would rather take the shame."
PostPosted: Thu Nov 27, 2008 11:38 am

While it was true that Bushfire had not displayed an awful lot of intelligence the past few days, first due to chock and later due to being blinded by rage, anger and envy, she could be rather sharp. At least, when she wasn't busy being blinded by her own thoughts. As it was though, the Seeker's words had perked her attention enough that she'd stopped pondering inwardly. Instead, her eyes were fixed upon the male, her brows knitting together as he grudgedly continued talking; it was obvious he'd been previously willing to strike up a bargain by keeping her within her territory.

Hmmmm....

Her ear tufts perked up once more and the Forager slowly stood with more pride on her branch; gone was the previous bitterness, replaced by a sharp look as he watched him, "A price?" she pondered this for a moment before she blinked, "That would depend on the price... and if getting me out of such blame would be done through a lie. Then again, I doubt a lie would be in your mind, seeing as how you're a seeker. Seeking out the truth and all that?" a brow arched, willing the male to go on and explain himself, "What is it you want from me, exactly?"

"Tsk," he clucked to himself, and ruffled his feathers irritably before smoothing them down. True, he was a Seeker, but he was far from being a saint, and he knew as well as anyone that sometimes you needed to lie in order to get what you needed. Or, really, what you wanted.

"Indeed, no lies," but that in itself was a lie. He blinked, and continued on, "I believe information would be a fair trade, since that is all I really want by coming here. I'm interested in any information you can give me about Basil and his background..."

He paused, and then inspected one of his talons.
"And... maybe one of those nuts you gave me before."
PostPosted: Fri Nov 28, 2008 5:40 am

Her eyes narrowed again as the Seeker 'tsked' out loud, but otherwise, she made no further movements, "Right," she nodded after a moment, content and obviously satisfied with what Bracken was saying. Bushfire had either believed his lie... or was secure in the knowledge she'd asked for the truth and thus could no longer be blamed for what the Seeker did. It was hard to tell, but given the way the female relaxed obviously and the small smile she granted him, it was most probable it was the former rather than the later, "A trade of information seems fair enough to me," she paused as she continued and though she did not chuckle, there was a clear spark of mirth in her lime colored eyes, "And a couple of nuts too, as a thank you."

Before she continued, the Forager shifted her weight on the branch, her head turning to preen her wing for a moment, "Let's see. Basil," she murmured as she resettled herself down. Bushfire told Bracken all what she knew about her ex-mate; his family lineage, the few relatives he had within the surrounding territories, everything. Sadly, there wasn't much dirt for him to uncover within the information she gave him. The only things that might have been of use were the fact the woodworker had proved himself to be rather shy when she'd met him, to the point he could have been dubbed a bit (quite the bit, actually) of a coward when faced with problems. It didn't matter what problem; Basil had been prone to taking the long way around it, rather than facing it, "When our clutch died, he was the first to hightail it away, without a second glance back. That's why I was so surprised he'd grown... the courage to so much as be with the Mist," she finished.

Then, the female turned away to look around the trees and bushes surrounding them, selecting a couple of nuts she deemed worthy. Suspending them with precision via her Will, she offered them to the Seeker, "I trust that was enough; you might get more information out of his family. They can't be particularly happy with what he's doing. I can't see them being happy he left their choice for a mate and rushed off to court a Mist that will shame their line."

He had the sneaking suspicion that he should feel embarrassed, but he was too busy trying to act nonchalant to show it, and the way Bushfire relaxed put him at ease as well. Bracken listened to the Forager intently, trying to tie up any information he might have and put the pieces into place- the 'who' of Basil was rapidly coming into focus, as if he'd been looking in a unfocused lens the whole time, and only now someone saw fit to take away the blur.

"Ah, thank you," he said quickly, taking the nuts with his own Will. Again the thanks lacked sincerity, but Bracken tried to move past it before it sounded too obvious.

He tucked a few of the nuts under talon- his Will had never been better than average, and holding things for too long became very tiring.
"I see..." he nodded to her, "That is quite interesting. Do you know where I can find the family?"

The Seeker was almost too eager- while there was little that Basil's family might be able to do now, they were still worth visiting and still worth spiting. His yellow eyes lit up in curiosity.
