Also referred to as The Dark Ages. Some of the clothing was spectacular i think.

Hehehe

Yes i agree, if only we could live like that today with electricity and the like. It would certainly be amusing and perhaps educational.

Don't forget the 100 years war, the plague and the fact that 50% of the population died before reaching 20 years old. sweatdrop

I love medieval clothing as well! This Christmas I'm making my cousin a medieval gown (something like a bliaut) for her present, and I'm excited (and frightened).

I read some where in history class that the population before the plague was never reached again until the last 20 years. Just imagine...they had that large of a population with no technology. Amazing.

What about the Crusades? Those were interesting. Aside from the parallels to today's war (subsitute national pride and patriotism for religion wink ), I found it interesting that the Catholic church which condones fighting, told the soldiers their souls would be saved if they only fought to in the war. O.o

And what of medeval science?

Of course, the eropean medicine books were steeped in superstition and lore, but in the middle east and India there were great bounds of surgery. I think i read somewhere that Indian surgeons were capable of operating on the skull, usually without damaging the brain!

I don't know if they had anesthetic technology or not...

I really like the way people in the Dark Ages dressed. I also think it is interresting why they called it the dark ages. It is called the dark ages bc
almostall information was lost. It was like people stopped caring about the world.

It wasn't that they stopped caring, it is just that after the fall of the Roman Empire all of the administrative systems were destroyed causing the populations to spread out into smaller, more manageable communities. The one uniting factor was the Catholic church which led to a lot of the problems later on in the 15th century when Europe was getting back on it's feet and was attempting to break away from the control of the church.

I really like the clothing, but I don't know if I would necessarily like to be a woman in this period, it was a pretty grim time for them. If only we could dress that way now!

Who says we can't dress that way now? If I can get around to it, I plan on making the Medieval dress that is really close fitted (is forgetting the name of it). Kind of like a surcoat, without the surcoat. I'd wear that around all the time. They dress in a lot of layers and I must say, I wish we still dressed like that because I have never been warmer wearing just my chemise, underskirt, overskirt, and corset out in the Fall weather.

I wear a medieval peasant ensemble sometimes from day to day and it is just the most comfortable thing ever. :3 Much nicer than jeans and a lot warmer than most ordinary modern dresses. Plus it holds up in a snowball fight. ;O

I've been to Pendragon Costumes before, and House of Dra, both are really good resources.

Though, it's usually really hard to find any kind of full armor that would fit any one person, so I've taken it on myself to begin learning how to do metalworking and smithing, and so far I've learned a lot and made a few peices so far. Once I get the time and supplies, I'll end up making full suits of armor, and if time REALLY allows, hand made chainmail shirts and cowls. The leather and cloth undergarments for the armor are easy enough to get anyway.

If you're interested in medieval arts and crafts, then do I have a resource for you.

http://moas.atlantia.sca.org/wsnlinks/ This is my local chapter of the SCA's (a medieval recreation society) Arts and Sciences link and resource list. As with anything else on the internet, be sure to do your research carefully.
