The Warriors
Film rating: 5/10 80’s cheese factor: 9/10 Total rating: 7/10[/b
There is little more pleasurable in life than the 80’s. Be it music, movies or fashion, it seemed to have been created totally for the benefit of us modern readers to look back and giggle at them. Now I love 80’s films - from comedies to serious, because [as well as many 80’s films being genuinely pretty damn good] the bad films are so cheesy that you end up loving them anyway. So let us choose a case study in this film: Warriors

Cool poster? Yeah, give it time... The plot: New York (or wherever the heck they are) is overrun with different gangs. Each Gang has a bit of turf they defend ferociously, as gangs do. You’d expect them to be intimidating, until you realise that most gangs only consist of about 7 members, and every last one has their own ‘uniform’ which is utterly hilarious and camp as heck. The ‘Warriors’ - our protagonists - have cute little red leather vests on bare shirts, and most of them think they’re tribal Africans or Amerindians in the way they dress. And these are suppose dot be the cool ones.

There is a city-wide gang meeting called, crated by Sirus, the head of the largest gang in town called ‘the Riffs’. Basically Sirus seems to be an evangelical James Brown wannabe who enjoys bellowing ‘can yoooou diiig iiiit?!’ (without any irony) at the crowd. His gang, the riffs are basically Karate-wannabes and ther’es load and loads of ‘em. Sirus proposes that the 200,000 united gangmembers join together and take on the police. All the gangs seem to like this idea: that is, until one a*****e decides to shoot Sirus just for the hell of it. The guy who shoots him is form the ‘rpuges’ gang - this guy:

Queue a mob rising, panick as the police come, and much running like hell. The Warriors are wrongly framed for Sirus’ murder, but don’t know about it. They want to get back to their home turf, but are unaware that now every gang in the city is trying to kill them. And the trains are unreliable as hell lol Queue action and the cameos of a bazillion gay-as-christmas gangs.
Roll on the cheese!
Ok, check out some of the gangs: The Riffs Gang: http://www.warriorsmovie.co.uk/content/gangs/images/riffs01.jpg http://www.warriorsmovie.co.uk/content/gangs/images/riffs02.jpg
The ‘baseball furies’ gang [srsly I’m not kidding XD]: http://www.warriorsmovie.co.uk/content/gangs/images/baseballfuries01.jpg http://www.warriorsmovie.co.uk/content/gangs/images/baseballfuries02.jpg
The ‘punks’ [ they have rollerskates, ROLLERSKATES! They look like rollerskating hillbillies!]: http://www.warriorsmovie.co.uk/content/gangs/images/punks01.jpg
The ‘boppers’ [pimpin! XD]: http://www.warriorsmovie.co.uk/content/gangs/images/boppers.jpg
The ‘hi-hats’ [they’re flipping mimes. MIMES!!!] : http://www.warriorsmovie.co.uk/content/gangs/images/hi-hats.jpg
+ many, many more biggrin
The verdict: I won’t lie to you, I really enjoyed this film, and it wasn’t completely dismal as an action/chase. Though you certainly take most of your enjoyment form laughing like crazy at the campness of it all, the dated acting, and the unintentional funnies. But you now what? That’s what it’s for - films like this are best when it’s 20 or 30 years down the line. I’d recommend a watch, just for fun. It’s even better the second time biggrin 7/10
