It was a pleasant place; the long afternoon light was lingering upon stretches of neatly maintained grass and the air was fresh and crisp. In fact, the small, unobtrusive park Grace had stumbled upon was so pleasant it almost seemed ficticious. Here were benches and picnic tables; here were idle children at games of ball, with their happy cries carrying through the air; here were gallivanters tired and sore from work; here were hundreds of others in the same mind, relaxing against the warm sun and wiggling their toes contentedly.

Leaning her back against the base of a weathered oak tree, the bark pressing uncomfortably into her back, Grace closed her eyes with an appeased sigh. Having walked for what felt like hours along countless unknown streets and dirty, littered ways with a small child determinedly singing the Song That Never Ends -- a song that indeed never, ever seemed to end -- very loudly (and very undettered by countless warnings of cutting out his vocal cords while he slept), it was a nice feeling to know that now there would only be the distant sounds of a boy having fun far, far away from her.

Sliding down the tree into a sitting position, too tired to care that she more than likely tore holes in her shirt, Grace opened her eyes to watch Lucien waddle after what looked like a very frightened ladybird.

Tyler had not been so keen on bringing the children out. For such a long time she had been intent on keeping them inside and safe. It was much easier to keep track of 8 children when they were in one confined area. Even the calmest of children were led to go stir-crazy, though, and the safest place she could think of was a police-guarded park. She wandered to a rock beside a copse of trees and plopped down where she could watch the kids play. Most of them had gone for a town-worker-run game of Hot Potato, but Marion and Kyle sat in the sand box, building an entire kingdom of sand-buildings.

Lucien fell forward, landing on his outstretched hands and knees, and crawled after the ladybird. His fingers grasped happily at the blades of grass, ripping them from the ground as he launched forward, intent on catching the small, spotted insect. The ladybird, however, was not so intent on being caught, and after a few moments of scuttling away from the young boy it took flight. Lucien's face fell into an expression that almost looked scandalized, and for a moment -- just one -- it looked as if he would cry.

Turning his head to look at his surroundings, Lucien's eyes fell upon the two children sitting in the sand box. Visibly perking and getting shakily to his feet, Lucien moved towards the sand box, looking to Marion and Kyle expectantly with all of his artless excitement in his smiling eyes.

Kyle just peered up at Lucien, eyes wide. She wasn't quite scared, perse, so much as silently observing. She was a very careful child and didn't want to be the first to speak in what may very well be an inappropriate situation. Marion, however, did not have such qualms. She giggled and waved before gesturing widely to the array of little sand-tools.

"Hi! You wanna play wif'us?," she asked, grin wide enough to split her face in two, "You kin' be d'king!" Seeing that her sister didn't seem to have any fear of the new boy, she managed a smile and a little wave.

"Hi. I'm Kyyyyle."

Lucien clapped his hands together.

"Kingkingking," he crooned happily, murmering a soft yay under his breath before stepping into the sandpit. He rocked on the heels of his feet and wiggled his toes (after complaining very loudly that he did not wish to wear his shoes out today) in the sand contentedly with his arms outstretched. He watched Marion and Kyle curiously before taking in the various array of sand tools and play things. Lucien made a noise from the back of his throat and knelt down, reaching for a particularly interesting looking shovel.

"M'Lucien," he mumbled, gesturing to himself distantly between looking at the shovel and the two young girls.

Kyle nodded contentedly and watched as Marion went back to building their kingdom. They had a main castle with tall, tall towers and a few little outside gated areas. The girls had gone so far as to make little peasant houses throughout the rest of the sand box. They were lucky that no other children had decided to join them and destroy their land.

Lucien waved the shovel in front of him, gurgling happily. Feeling disconnected from the pair, Lucien moved closer to the two girls, careful to avoid putting any unsuspecting peasants to an early death as he shuffled forward. Lucien watched with genuine intruige as Marion continued to build their kingdom and, when he was sure she was completely preoccupied with the task at hand, he leant his body towards Kyel and whispered:

"What's a king?"

Kyle giggled softly and covered her mouth. Oh my! He didn't even know what he was being?

"He rules the land!" she said with an elaborate sweeping arm movement, "Well, under the queen of course." Because they were like Engrind. Mommy said the Queen was in charge there!

Lucien suddenly grinned, clapping his hands together and swinging his shovel through the air. He stood, still careful not to stand on the peasant's houses, and puffed out his chest proudly, raising his shovel into the air triumphantly.

"I am the king, ruler of all the sand!" he announced loudly, before glancing quickly to Kyle and Marion. "Well, under the 'keen, of course. Who is the 'keen?" He asked, lowering his shovel with a confused frown. There was three of them, and only one King and Queen. Who would the remaining child be?

Kyle pointed to Marion, their proud queen. Marion lifted her chin smugly, and then smiled. Kyle smiled in return.

"I'm d'pwincess." Well, that certainly explained the 3-child problem. So Lucien had a baby with Marion!

Lucien moved to kneel next to Marion and Kyle, before announcing proudly:

"I am king Lucien, ruler of all the sand -- and this is my 'keen, Marion, and our daughter, pwincess Kyle."

He grabbed a handful of sand and started applying it carefully to the outside of the main castle, humming happily to himself. "I'm adding some more right here," he gestured to where he had patted down the sand, "so that en'mies can't get in."
