The snow crunched as more seemed to fall from the skies above. A gust of chillingly cold wind blew past a dark figure that happened to have stepped out into the brisk morning. Shivers ran down her dark colored coat as her eyes remained closed. Snow swirled about her limbs and even landed on her already frosted colored back. Winter, her favorite time of the year. She didn't really know why she liked the cold, where most would think she would be tired of it after living in the darkness for so very long. At least, she got that idea from one she had come across some time ago.
Raising her head, the strange dark colored mare let the wind blow past again, her curly green locks waving on one side of her head as her tail brushed against her side. Another round of shivers and the mare soon started walking, listening to the cries of the wind and the crunching of the snow under her hooves. Alaska once thought of just staying in a small shelter, but didn't want to miss out on the games of the wind. A giggle came from her as it blew again, making her tail sway and tickle her sides. Yes, she had waited for this time of year for what seemed so long after coming south. It felt almost like... Home.

The colt shuddered as the white flakes danced about him, clinging to his sable coat. It wasn't as dark due to the snow bunching up on his black, the usual white stripes lining his back now appeared far larger and longer. He felt the frozen mass filling the missing gaps between his cloven hooves as he stepped into yet another pile. The only color in the area came from his bright green eyes, desperate in the winter desert.
Taigi shook out his mane, uncovering another clump of grayish-black or two in the process. Why did he pick this day to explore? Oh, right. Because he raced away on his adventures with any chance he got. He grit his teeth as another gust of wind and snow hit him once more and trudged on, there was something to find in this storm, he just knew it. Even though his first intentions were to find out about the sparkling dust littering the air, he now thought otherwise. But how marvelous it felt to discover for the first time that these tiny particles melted on his tongue and turned into water. Just like magic. The pure works of nature. At this point, he couldn't help but smile and marvel at the wondrous happenings, ordinary and extraordinary at the same time.

The cold bit at her coat, but the dark colored mare stepped even further out into the open. Oh this was so much like home, ears twitching, she noted the smaller sounds that were amongst the ever louder howl of the winds. It sounded like others were moving out of their shelters to brave the storm that surrounded the area. Well, that was their choice as it was her own. Walking on again, her hooves making odd sweeping motions, she walked on, her eyes closed against the sting of the snow. Not that they were much use open anyways, she could only see the inky black abyss she had been tossed into.
Ears perching backwards, as to not get filled with snow, she wandered further away from her own shelter and unknowingly toward a small colt. She would find out when a hoof touches something that didn't feel much like snow at all, nor like much of anything else for that matter. Head tilting to one side and letting her snow covered hair shift off to one side. "Hello?" she asked softly, though her voice might have been lost to the snow and wind as it whipped around her. "Someone else there?"

Something approached the colt out of nowhere, and all too fast. For a moment, he lost his bearings, unable to tell of what happened exactly. One minute, he was content, shaken from the cold, but still looking forward to adventure, the next he was nearly run over by a Soquili carrying quite a few hands' height more than he. Taigi was left blinking up into eyes as white as the snowstorm itself, adorned by sparking wisps of evergreen locks of hair.
"He-" Alas, when he summoned the wits to speak, a gust of wind and snow wound into his throat, leaving him spitting out chunks of ice and melted water. He was quick to get it out, because he thought himself rude to greet someone new by coughing in their face. "Hello..." Upon further observation, he found that the stranger was a female, and was left flattening his ears as it dawned on him that his coughing was that much more rude, "...miss!"

Ears flicking themselves forward as the winds seemed to die back some letting the snow merely fall at their own choosing and land where they pleased amongst the rest. She had heard someone's voice, a someone that was smaller then she was, from the tone of it and from the distance. Silence filled the snowy space between them, as she lowered her head a little, getting the scent of the foal before her.
"Something the matter there?" she wondered hearing the foal cough and sputter as the wind had done something to cause it. "Also, what are you doing out on such a bleak day? You like the snow and cold too?" her head tilting to one side as blank eyes blinked against the cold air that touched them.

Once again, the foal found himself lost in the snowy desert of her eyes, though the space within them was no different from the fields surrounding them right now. She had a certain majesty about her being, her beauty belonged here, this climate that made Tai's hair stand on end and his teeth chatter.
"N-no, miss!" Taigi forced the words through the tremors shuddering through him, "I d-don't think I favor it m-much ov-" he gave another shudder before continuing, "over the warmth o-of the summer!"
But he didn't hate it, either. The cold allotted a temperature cool enough for the snowflakes to layer upon hardened ground and cover the autumn past's leaves, leaving them to decompose in peace. This would leave the soil much healthier for the beautiful, healthy flowers in the spring. He, of course, had spoken to several flutters who'd helped him to come to appreciate the flora of the world.
"B-but, miss, I certainly enj-joy the snow!"

Alaska was well suited for the winter climate even if she wore a coat like everyone else. She claimed to herself that maybe her blood was thicker or something. Turning her head a little she listened to the chattering of the foal's teeth and the shivering against the wails of the wind that blew around them. Alaska gave a small shiver as the wind blew across her back, though only sighed. "Yes, the summer seasons can be quite nice." She agreed, though had come straight from cold to hot and nearly died from it. "Some are more used to it then I am."
Pulling her head away from where she had lowered it, her eyes closed themselves against the bite of the snow again, shaking out her mane that felt weighted down with snow. From the sounds she was hearing, it was colder then she first thought. Stepping off to one side a little she tried stepping around the foal, though didn't seem to be doing too well on it.
"My name's Alaska little one. A traveler from the far north." She stated as she stopped again and turned her head in the direction of the foal. "Perhaps we should get into some shelter, the winds are picking up harder." She advised as the winds were really starting to pull at her hair.

Taigi's ebony head bobbed enthusiastically at the thought of shelter. Sure, one part of his mind, a very dominant one at that, pulled at his tongue to ask her more of her travels. He resisted against it to spare his limbs, however, and felt the need to confirm his nods with speech, "y-yes, miss! Sh-s-shelter sounds gr-reat!"
Something about the mare irked him. It wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but when he gazed into those blank eyes, he found himself disoriented, lost. And something told him that she felt a bit disoriented, too. Like she could see nothing but everything at the same time. This thought, though it could've been silly, sent a shudder through him that wasn't in the least influenced by the cold.
He was grateful when 'Alaska' attempted to shield him from the wind, no matter the failure in fulfilling the purpose, "m-my name's Taigi, m-miss Alaska! It's a p-p-pleasure!" The winds were indeed picking up, chilling the foal to his very bones. He felt so bare standing in the midst of such a storm.

Giving a kind smile to the foal, an ear flicked lightly as she listened to the surroundings. The wind blew through the pine branches and thickets off to the side, there would be some shelter there, at least enough away from the wind and increasing snow. Gesturing with her head, she gave odd sweeping motions with her front hooves as she following the wounds of the wind in the needles and the clatter of thin branches. It was only when she felt to ends of the thicket branches did she lower her head some and part the way of branches to step through and into a more sheltered area. It was here that the snow was less and air was somewhat warmer, the wind was calmer and one could hear their own thoughts more clearly. Laying herself down upon the ground, Alaska's head turned back into the direction she had come, listening for the sound of the colt.
"Much quieter in here, one can hear themselves think." She said with a soft nod. "Taigi? Was it? One thinks that is a strong name for a colt with a strong voice as yours." Complements of her own creation, as she laid waiting for the colt to join her.
Alaska's hair had still snow within their curled locks, but in due time it would be melted leaving them to glitter as always. Within these changes of scenery, the white lace like markings on her lower legs could be made out, within them intricate designs. Not that she knew what she looked like anymore, what she remembered as a foal was that she was dark colored with vivid green hair. Besides that... She had all but forgotten and thought it best not to really ask of her markings, feeling that would only be trusted to someone who didn't think her insane...
"Now, one can feel that something troubles your young mind, is one right?" she asked, though commonly she was right, other times she was wrong. Whichever the case it mattered not to her, she had also that strange need to call herself 'one' instead of common terms...

Taigi stuck to Alaska's side like a leech out of water. Until she descended past a mass of wiry branches, that is. In that instance, he got a flashback of a day at the river with his brothers, when his younger brother got stuck in the bramble. When Taigi went to help Nik, however, his brother's situation became the lesser worry as Tai's wispy, but short, mane tied him to a particularly nasty twig.
But, swallowing his fear of getting entangled once more, Taigi pushed through the branches after the mare. To his surprise, he found himself sliding through them easily and landing himself in a cozy spot in front of the dark mare. He grinned and his worries seemed so silly then. The mare was lying upon the ground, yet she was nearly as tall as he, even while doing so. He sighed, wishing to grow older and gain the freedom to explore.
"Yes, miss, it's very lovely." His prior grin, which was fading, seemed to be hit by the tide-coming of another, like the waves that never quite left sure by oceans, not that Taigi had explored such places as of yet. He blinked, then was struck by another wave of a grin as she complimented him on his voice and the name by which he was called, "why, thank you miss Alaska, I think your name is grand as well!"
With the snow melting, droplets of water trickling off of both their coats, he could make out a white pattern on the mare's legs. And another flashback struck, this one of a two-legger conversing with another, pointing to spots on a piece of parchment, patterns like hers spread over the wide paper, map. Her markings reminded him of these objects, they sure looked helpful to the humans.
But this flashback disappeared, leaving Taigi blinking at the mare once more, as she inquired of him an explanation. No wonder one for his spacing. But then again, once he thought on the question, something troubles your young mind, only one thought lapsed back into clear view. "Why, yes, miss," he kicked at a pebble on the cool ground awkwardly, "I don't mean to be rude... But..." Why did he feel intimidated now? He was only wondering about those mystifying eyes of hers, purely physical. And he wasn't about to call her ugly, far from it. "Miss... Your eyes... They refuse to tell me their story without the help of your tongue."

Silence was something she treasured at times, though in other cases if was like a curse that never ended. The small breaks within the silences was a good breather when needed, still. Alaska waited for young Taigi to join her, when she heard him she smiled softly still. Ah youth, something that was now just a fleeting memory to the mare, but it didn't ease the passings of many thoughts. He had thanked her for what she had said about his name and she bowed her head in her own silent thank you. When talk came around to her eyes, well, it was bound to come out sooner or later.
"I see. That is a bit of a problem ain't it?" she pondered as her blank gaze shifted a bit. "You are probably wondering why they are the way they are. One was no older then you are now when one's sight was taken as a boon for warmth and shelter from most unsightly weather. Much like that is outside this little haven, though worse in other ways. It was freezing cold and not all that fell was the frozen water in the fluffy shapes. Icy cold rain fell from the clouds in large drops." She paused a moment trying to recall everything that had happened.
Alaska had only told the story to one other. Someone she called a friend, but haven't really seen the mare in a while, she had to wonder how the mare was doing. Shaking that from her mind the images of her past started to play within her abyss, herself as a small dark colored foal hidden within the icy white landscape. There were others, but too far to call, the wind howling in her ears and her coat feeling like someone had pushed her into a frozen lake. Physically, Alaska shivered, closing her pale eyes to hide what wouldn't be shown, pains of memory.

The mare before him now looked as harmless and innocent as him, in this little coop of a shelter. They were both minions to the storm, for it could neither be reversed nor stopped on mere equine whim. And the story she began telling was a meaningful one, he knew enough to expect that, however. For a change in one's sight was very drastic.
Alaska spoke of herself in third person, almost. As if she was telling the story that had no ties to her life at all; a fairy tale. But Taigi's ears perked, and he shifted closer to her, perhaps to preserve what body heat they were exerting.
And her tale was indeed deep and sorrowful. It crawled to a point in his heart that even a human-made weapon could never penetrate. Worse in other ways. He wondered and marveled upon her words as they weaved one mental tapestry after another, all so beautiful and detailed.
She shivered, rather violently, and he took the last few steps closer to her and lay next to her, leaving a hoof's width between her shoulder and his own. He hoped that this was alright with her, but didn't everyone deserve the comfort of another on such a cold day?
