[I made it RP in case anyone felt compelled to join in. n_n]
The leather sack. Her coat. His blanket. An oil-lantern, with matches. Canteen. The Seeds.
Did she have everything she needed? Oh, she certainly hoped so. Marissa didn't know how long this "quest" of hers would last, an hour, a night, a week. She only knew that she needed to get out as soon as she could.
It was 11 p.m., one hour away from the hour which Val instructed her to search for the dark creature. Carefully she put all of her luggage into the leather sack, blanket on top, and laid Kale in last, so that his head was peeking out of the top. She swung it over her front like a baby carrier. Openeing her wagon door with a creak, she set out into the night.
And suddenly she realized: She had to weapon to her name.

The night swallowed her up, but it felt so good to be outside, walking, free of Pierre. ...Emelyn loved the boy more than anything in the world, but even so, he knew how to cause a day to drag on, what with his screaming and crying and general moodiness. Sometimes, Em thought her son was doomed to be an Unfortunette adult- such dark tidings he'd come from, and such a long road he obviously had ahead. Oqaia, the new member of their caravan, had asked Em if she might watch the young one for the night- she was so anxious to become a part of this world that she'd reached out for the infants, which enthralled and enraptured her. Em certainly didn't mind the night off, and had handed Pierre off... realizing that she probably wasn't giving the woman the best view of what the infants were like, and hoping that this wouldn't be her last night of 'freedom' in a long while.
The stars kissed her skin, and she spun, the accoutrements on her belt hitting her thighs as she went. She was rather weighted down for a walk, she realized- and was turning back for her wagon when she saw Marissa striking out into the night as well, creeping down from her wagon. She headed towards her, instead.
"Good travels," she said warmly, but quietly- for the rest of the caravan was undoubtedly asleep. "Where are you going so late at night?"

Marissa looked up with a start. It was very dark, and her eyes were unadjusted- who knew she was being watched! She must look like a fool, she realized, as she had started pacing back and forth in contemplation. Halting, she smiled as well, striding up to Emelyn and kissing her cheeks, as was the norm for her. She held onto her shoulders as she spoke, a hint of tension in her voice.
"Ah, Em..it's so good to see you...it's been awhile, you look well, the night is fabulous and the weather clear as day..except...it's night..."
Deciding against continuing her babbling conversation, she turned her tone to one of distress, looking to the ground. "Emelyn, dear, I've a problem. Kale is hurt, as you know, from..the attack," she gulped the words, "And nothing I do is helping him. Val says tonight, an hour from now, I need to find a dark creature. Any kind, she's told me, will do, but I've got to kill it.. to heal him. You see, the archers, they were magic-sappers..." She hurried to her point. "But- oh, I'm such an idiot- I'm all packed up and ready to go and I've got nothing to kill it with!"
Kale, meanwhile, was nodding off to sleep.

Emelyn nodded at Marissa, and held her hands out in a calming position, mostly to let the gypsy know that it was alright. She didn't blame her for her babbling panic- if Pierre had been hurt by magic that even Val couldn't heal... well, she'd be in a panic, as well.
"No fear, friend," she said, pulling her dagger out from her belt. It wasn't the dagger she'd been given that day, but instead, a regular old Highland-Gelm dagger, like the one Pierre had been transformed from. "You can take this with you. Or if you'd like, you can take my bolero..." she dug in the folds of her skirt for the rock and sinew weapon, and then paused in her search. "Although I could just come with you." She offered.

Marissa's smile was fleeting, but gracious. "Ah, Em, what a wonderful thing to offer," she said with a sigh of relief that toppled through her airy politeness, "But I really couldn't impose...I mean, who knows what I'll face out there." Val had told her that any dark creature, even of the smallest callibur, would do for completing her task. Marissa's strategy was to kill the first wretch she came across- but suppose she happened to come across a crick, the snake-like, beaked imp, or gods forbid a barghest? She didn't know the extent of what dwelled in the forests of Mulden.
"But, if you insist..?" There was the tiny, quavering tinge of hope in her voice.

Emelyn laughed, picking up on the hinting lilt of Marissa's voice.
"Of course I insist. Pierre is with Oqaia for the night- this is my vacation." She pulled at her dagger and admired it in the moonlight before smiling at Marissa. "And what's a vacation without a little evil critter hunting?" They started for the woods.
"So, what are we looking for?"

Marissa followed with Kale strapped to her busom, feeling lighter. "Anything, anything at all," she said quietly as the light from the moon dimmed as they passed beneath the treeline. She dug the lantern out from beneath Kale, who stirred only a bit, and lit it. She took a dark cloth out of her skirt pocket and draped it over the light, causing a damper in it's glow, as not to distract any unwanted attention.
"I don't much know the creatures of Mulden, but I'd suspect dark things to be abundant..."

Something howled in the distance- and Em jerked her head to face it, before laughing and turning to Missa.
"Oh yes. I think so." She picked up her skirts, resheathed her dagger, and walked with Missa into the night. As they walked, she kept her eye out for anything darting under bushes... or for the more obvious evil to spring out at them. She figured it wouldn't be near the encampment, and the fire- so they may have a bit of a walk.
"So.... have you ever actually killed anything?" She asked her companion as she stepped lightly over tree roots.

Marissa chuckled and smiled weakly.
"Once," she said. "A long time ago, before I came to the caravan, and I still lived in romania. I was tending my garden, and a dog came through the yard gate. It was big, skinny, and sick. It's eyes were rolled back and it was growling. I was scared. When it began advancing, it was stumbling around and barking, and it didn't sound anyhing like a normal dog should." She swallowed. "I picked up the garden fork next to me and threw it as it came at me." Marissa looked at Em and bit her lip. "It was a crude death that it suffered. I havn't fancied to pick up another weapon since."

Em was silent for a moment, picking through the brush with light steps.
"Wow. Well, that wasn't the best experience, was it? Now... does it have to be you that kills it? Did Val specify?"

Marissa shook her head. "She didn't say. But...I think I'd better do it. I put Kale in danger in the first place, taking him to the roof. I think I owe it to him to heal him. Do you know?" She smiled crookedly, absently petting the bridge of Kale's nose protectively as he slept.
There was a rustle in the bushes, but it went largely disregarded.
