Sorry, I don't usually do fanfic and I'm a little embarrassed to try. sweatdrop

But anyway, this is a story about a girl named Caroline who is just starting out as a pokemon trainer. She lives in the region of Kansai and starts her journey in Quartz City. Her goal is to locate her brother and bring him home, but it's not nearly as easy as it sounds. According to rumors, her brother has teamed up with Team Rocket. Now Caroline is willing to do whatever it takes to bring her brother back home safely. She begins her journey with only a tiny bit of money, and two young and unruly pokemon. If she's going to take on Team Rocket for her brother's freedom, she'll need to toughen up her pokemon as well as herself.

Caroline probably won't show up in the Pokemon Madness rp, but she might. There's a small chance.

Feel free to read and review.

Chapter One: Double Trouble

It was already dusk when Caroline Kelly got of work from the Poké Mart in Quartz City. However, even in this city that was best known for its abundance of thieves and terrorists, she felt rather well protected. Her older brother Rick had given her two Pokémon for her very own, his Ekans and his Zubat. She’d only had them a short while and they still weren’t fond of her, but she still doted on them and trusted them to keep her safe.

Rick had left at a bad time. The freefalling economy had left many families, including the Kelly family, in a lot of debt and problems. He had been 20 and had a strong team of Pokémon of his own. He’d once dreamed of competing in the Pokémon League, but as money got tight, he knew that he could never afford to make the journey. Instead, he’d dropped out of school at the age of 16 and worked full time to help support the family. This one night, however, he packed his bags and gave his little sister two Pokémon that he’d caught for her and promised to return home with enough money to take care of her and the rest of their family.

Now Caroline worked at the Pokémon Mart in order to earn a little bit of cash and to provide food and treats for her Pokémon that she normally would never be able to afford. She let her Pokémon out of their pokeballs to accompany her on her way home. She hadn’t run into any trouble yet, wandering the streets at night. People think twice about mugging a kid with Pokémon, especially with intimidating Pokémon like hers. Her Ekans was named Swiper and sported red and black scales instead of the usual violet. He was stronger and more intelligent than any average Ekans. Most people who noticed his unique coloring stayed well away. Zubat was actually rather timid; she’d named him Crybaby because of all the racket that he made at night when she wanted to sleep. However, it was only his appearance that was important in avoiding trouble. When folks heard the rustle of wing beats in a dark night or saw the flash of his fangs, they moved quickly in another direction.

“Here, look at what I got you guys today. That employee discount sure is great, huh?” Caroline said cheerfully as she fished a bag of Pokémon treats from her bookbag. “I thought I’d get you guys a special snack for doing so well in training yesterday. Rick will sure be proud of us when he comes home.”

“Ekanssss,” Swiper replied, as Crybaby immediately began to nibble on one of the treats Caroline held out. Suddenly Swiper froze and gazed off to the left, down a darkened alley that Caroline was about to pass.
“What is it Swiper?” Caroline asked, but then gasped and ducked behind the corner of the nearest building. She had heard her brother’s name being spoken by one of the two men in the alleyway. Crybaby perched on her shoulder to keep from alerting the two with the sound of his wings. Swiper also ducked low and coiled protectively around Caroline. She might not be important to him, but Swiper knew that she was important to Rick, and it was Rick who had caught him and given him a home, so it was with Rick that his loyalties lied. Crybaby felt the same way and bared his fang in readiness should a fight break out, but mostly they were just silent, all alert to any news of the boy who’d left home and whom they all dearly missed.

“Right…Rick Kelly, you know the kid I’m talking about,” the first man continued. “They say he made it all the way to Ruby Village doin’ good work for the Boss.”

“Who’dve ever thought that prettyboy would make a Rocket? Well, it’s always good to have another join the cause.”

“To protect the world from devastation…”

“To unite all peoples within our nation…”

The two men grinned and then laughed with shared wickedness. Caroline clenched her fists and seethed with anger at the mere thought that her brother might turn to thievery and terrorism. But now the men were walking towards her and she tried to make a run for it.

“How about we stop at the local pub…hey, a kid! Don’t just stand there man, stop her, she’s heard Rocket business. Poochyena go!”

“Rattata go!”

Before Caroline could get very far, she was standing face to face with a snarling Poochyena and could hear Rattatata readying its attack behind her. “We’ve no choice but to fight. Swiper, wrap up Poochyena! Crybaby, leech the life out of Rattata!” Swiper had Poochyena trapped in its coils before the enemy Pokémon could make a single attack, but Crybaby was caught at the wrong end of Rattata’s tail whip. “It can’t hurt you by wagging its tail, Crybaby, attack while it’s busy!” The Zubat obeyed its trainer and used leech life over and over again until Rattata was mostly drained. His attacks did very little damage, but they gradually wore Rattata down until he only had a bit of fight left in him.

Caroline was having a difficult time conducting two Pokémon battles at once. Swiper was doing well. It appeared that Poochyena never stood a chance to Swiper’s speedy attacks. But while she was busy observing one battle, the other headed south fast. Rattata finished using its tail whip attack and delivered a devastating tackle to Crybaby. The injured Pokémon hurtled partway through the air before it could recover with over a third of its health gone. “Crybaby,” Caroline called when she saw her Pokémon take such a dire hit. “Don’t give up! Leech his life again and take some of your energy back. You can do it!” Crybaby seemed to take courage from his trainer and continued his attack, even enduring another punishing tackle attack from Rattata before finally finishing off its opponent.

“Good job you two!” Caroline cheered as the Rockets called back their battered Pokémon. Swiper slithered up beside her and hissed threateningly at the two Rockets, ready for another battle. Crybaby didn’t feel nearly so bold but still made a great display of his toxic fangs as he settled on Caroline’s shoulder.

“You win this time, twerp,” the first Rocket growled. “But let this be a lesson to you to stay out of Rocket business.”

“But, what if she tells someone what she overheard?”

“She wouldn’t dare. It’d be easy for us to find her and silence her in this town. Remember girly, the walls have ears around here. You’d better not go running your mouth.” The two Rockets then turned to go, dropping a small bag that clinked when it hit the pavement.

Caroline stood still, breathing hard from such a dangerous encounter. “I can hardly believe that we survived that.” She told her Pokémon. “You both were wonderful. Absolutely brilliant! Here, have more treats!” She pulled out the snack bag and fed each of them another treat before walking over to examine the bag that the Rocket had dropped. “It’s money,” she cried in surprise and counted it. “$380, hmm, that’s enough to buy a pokeball, or even a potion, maybe both if we use my discount at the Pokemart. Who’d think that Rockets would follow Pokémon League rules and pay up after a loss? Well, I suppose even Rockets don’t want trouble from the League.” She patted her two companions affectionately as she imagined what she could buy with that kind of money.

“What if we bought a pokeball? Then we could catch another Pokémon. The more, the better, right? I wonder if we could go on our own Pokémon journey. If we did, could we find my brother?” Crybaby sighed just thinking about finding Rick and Caroline gave him another pat. “I know you guys miss him too. I suppose it’s settled then. We’ll buy a pokeball tomorrow morning bright and early. We’ll have to battle lots of trainers to fund the trip, of course. Mom and Dad can’t afford to help us. But you guys really proved yourselves tonight. I’m confident that we could take any trainer out there, and we’ll only get tougher as we go. Plus, you’ll be in top condition tomorrow after a good feed and rest.”

Caroline made it home with her two Pokémon at her side. When she stepped through the door, her mother fussed over her immediately. Destiny Kelly had once been a calm and confident woman, but after her son ran off she became over-protective and nervous about her one remaining child. For that reason, Caroline endured her interrogation every time she came home.

“Where have you been, young lady? It’s been long dark out and dinner is getting cold. What’s wrong with Crybaby? Why does he look so beat up?”
“Sorry Mom, we just, were challenged by a couple other trainers on the way home today.”

Destiny immediately grew pale and gasped. Caroline’s father, Tristan, lowered the newspaper he’d been reading and stared at her over his rectangle glasses.

“I won though, well, we won. Crybaby took quite a bit of damage, but he’ll be fine after some dinner and some rest. Um, here’s the money we earned.” Caroline placed the bag on the table before her father, next to his empty dinner plate. Mentally, she scolded herself for selfishly thinking of keeping the money that her family badly needed. But her father only picked up the bag and handed it back to her.

“No dear, you earned this money. You work hard and train your Pokémon well; you deserve every cent you win.”

Caroline grinned and accepted the bag back. “In that case,” she began in a shaky voice, “do you think that it will be alright if I go on a Pokémon journey?”

“Absolutely not!” Destiny declared before another word could be said, “Sweety, you’re a good trainer, but journeys like that are dangerous. Kids get killed, taken advantage of, even recruited into Team Rocket on Pokémon journeys. Besides, you know we can’t give you money to start your trip.”

“But Mom! All the other kids left on their journeys years ago! I’m sixteen! My Pokémon are strong and loyal. And I have the money to start my journey right here!” Caroline held up her bag of money.
“How much did you make, dear?” Tristan asked, always the sensible parent.

“$380, plus I have the $30 from work today. That’s enough money for two pokeballs and still money for food too. And if we need more, we can fight other trainers for it.”

Destiny opened her mouth to argue, but Tristan held up a hand to silence her. He was the head of the household, and this was his decision to make, as far as the family was concerned. “Caroline, I just want you to understand that this would be very difficult for you. You’ll have a disadvantage to other trainers. Many will have been training Pokémon since they were ten years old, you’ll have the late start. They may have more money and more gear to boost their Pokémon in battle. Plus, most trainers receive starter Pokémon and pokedexes from their local professor. Starter Pokémon are inherently more valuable and usually stronger than caught Pokémon, and all other trainers will have limitless information in their pokedex. You’d have to go without all that. Can you do that, Sweety?”

Caroline had made her decision before her father had even begun his speech. “Yes Dad, I can do it!” Swiper and Crybaby each put in their assenting opinions as well and a smile grew on Tristan’s face.
“In that case, we’ll help you pack for the trip. Now hurry and eat, you and those Pokémon look famished. I have a map from back in the day when I used to travel; you should take it with you.”

“Thanks Dad! You’re the best! Oh, don’t cry Mom, I promise to be careful.”

“We’re so proud of you, Caroline, you always make us so proud,” Destiny declared and hugged her daughter.

Thus began Caroline’s journey to find her brother and hopefully develop a powerful arsenal of Pokémon along the way.
