Friday night while i was in a store on campus buying dinner a girl came up to me and asked me if my hair is real. Now, grant you, i do have what could be considered long hair that i wear in braids. But, the way she reacted when i told her my hair was real was really disturbing. After i said yes, she said wow, i've gotta get some weave so i can keep up. Now, am i wrong for being slightly disturbed or am i just being insensitive?

Well I have semi long hair. For a African American. People are always tugging on my hair and asking me if its weave. I'm not really bothered by it, its just like yeah all of you have asked this millions of times, leave it alone. As for do they obsesse about it. On some level yes but when I wake up I'm like wow, I have long hair so I cant complain. As for random thoughts thankgod for Madame CJ Walker.

yeah, it was a black girl and why do black people act like our hair doesn't grow? It grows like any other race of human beings...we act like there's some secret to getting our hair to grow. I think the reason a lot of us don't have "long" hair is because we put so many harmful chemicals in it that damage it.
Ebony angel, what did you mean you have long hair "for an African american" our hair does grow.

i dunno - i cut mine when i was 19, and it hasn't come back since. i think i will change my 'perm' - there is a Phyto perm that is all natural (sorry, i know i don't have to have one, but i really need for my hair to 'lay down' when i want it to, and i'm straight up lazy when it comes to flat irons, curlers, whatever.
but hair hasn't been the same since i cut it. i'm trying and trying, but my scalp is really damaged, even though my hair isn't, so it keeps coming out.
i'm headed for the PhytoRelaxer, though, after the winter's over. Need to braid this mess up for the season again.

And those "harmful" chemicals are the only thing that wouldnt ruin my hair. Are you full African American?

i think your ideas about hair growth are a little off. While we black folks do have thick, wavy hair, it does grow like other races of people. The rate at which hair grows has nothing to do with race, it has more to do with genetics. The only reason a lot of black women don't have "long" hair is because they perm it and do all kind of unnatural things to it, i.e. perms, weaves, etc. If we started wearing our hair in more natural styles, then there wouldn't be so many of us with damaged hair.

More natural styles as in nappy? When my hair gets really nappy and I go without perming it, it starts falling out or breaking off when I comb it. No matter how many times I wash or condition it it'll fall out. I'm also tender headed so combing it everyday doesnt really do anything, but give me a headache.

if your having so many problems with chemicals and your tender headed you should just adopt the dreads, I had dreads for 5 years and you go through i kind of passage during the first 2 years it feels really good, but I know alot of people (especially sistas0 have some kinda stigma attached with just the word.

see that's the thought process i'm talking about, some of us actually think that black people can't have long and/or healthy hair. We can, and the only reason alot of us don't it because we have this little tendency to hate ourselves and our features. Therefore, we use all kind of products that will take away our "bad" features.

Your funny. If your talking about Ebony Beauty, she doenst hate herself. How do I know, shes like my best friend/person i'm stalking. ninja I think she loves herself a little too much. And as for black people hating themselves I highly doubt it. Most would never want to change anything.

[..no...he's "a guy." xd when i was younger, i wished my hair was longer, especially while i sat and watched my brothers get haircuts every week because their hair kept growing long when my mom wanted it to be "short and neat." besides, i agree that hair length has something to do with genetics as well. 3nodding ]
