I bet almost all of us have had a time when we were talking about something Harry Potter related that we thought was obvious and then people around us had no idea what we were talking about.
Share the horror here! We'll probably all empathise with you. 3nodding
For example, in my chemistry class a few years ago we turned fire green and I was so excited that I said, "It's like Floo Powder!" cool Guess what? No one knew what I meant. burning_eyes

Okay, I got a reindeer pen and named it James Potter. I told people and they asked, 'who is James Potter?' Then I explained who he was. Then they asked why did I name my reindeer pen after him. I was like because he was an animagus. Then they asked what an animagus was. I explained and started talking about patronuses and they didn't know what that was. Finally it clicked on them and they said, "Oh, the silvery thing?'
I was outraged hehe!

Gah, I know! It's horrible, isn't it? I say that I like reading about James and Lily and people say, "Who are they?" I cry, all offended, "Harry's parents!" They say, "Oh" and shrug as if it doesn't matter. Grr, it's infuriating!
It's so much worse when it pertains to my beloved Remus. People ask what my dream man is like and I'll say, "Remus." They ask with a weirded-out expression, "Who?" "Professor Remus Lupin from Harry Potter," I explain, thinking that this MUST be enough information. "Uh, who?" They blink cluelessly. I'll say in a deadpan voice, "The werewolf." "Oh!" Comprehension dawns. Then: "Why do you fancy a werewolf?" "I don't love him because he's a werewolf!" I roll my eyes in frustration. "Oh. Right." They still don't get it, but they don't ask anymore questions. Honestly, this same conversation has happened to me more than once with different people. rolleyes

This is a cool thread, I love the idea! Last year I had attempted to draw a young Sirius Black and in my mind he has long, straight black hair. Anyway, I had to stay after with my english teacher to finish a test and while waiting for the late bus to come, I took out my drawing and tried to clean it up a bit. Then she goes "Who's that?" and I go "Oh, it's Sirius Black." Thinking that at least an english teacher has read HP...wrong! She goes "Who?" and I go "He's my favorite character from the Harry Potter books. He's Harry's godfather but I'm trying to draw him in his school days." and she goes "Oh, ok. Looks good!" That wasn't so bad, what was bad was a couple days later I brought it out again to show off the almost finished product and she goes "She came out great!" and I was like open mouth and astonished, Sirius, a girl? I said "Umm Sirius is a guy." and she goes "Ohhh oopps! My bad! The long hair threw me off!" I made it obvious he's a guy! But I just said "Yeah, I see your point." but she felt so stupid and it was so obvious she thought she had insulted my art and was saying all these goods things about it after that. I think it's funny now, but I really was insulted when she said he looked like a girl.

Thanks, Cy, I'm glad that you like the topic! I thought we could all use a chance to vent about this sort of thing.
I probably would have been insulted also if I had been in your position. Although, to be fair, I HAVE seen fan arts where Sirius does in fact look like a girl because the facial features were too feminine.
One of my favourite fan arts of the Marauders in their school days I showed to my friends and they all thought that Remus was Hermione confused so I suppose he looked like a girl too.

I know what you all are talking about^^ Some time ago I told a friend that Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince would't come out in November but in July 2009 and I was really upset and angry and everything and she just said: "Really, is it?" That made me really speachless^^ I mean she knows Harry Potter but how can she remain so calm when she just noticed that she will have to wait another seven months to watch the movie????

So I was at DragonCon in Atlanta this year, and one of the people there was like, "who is that supposed to be?" when a Harry Potter look alike walked by, and I just happened to be walking by and so I stopped to tell him that it was a Harry Potter look alike, and he just stared at me. It was so akward, because you would figure, someone dressed up as a storm trooper at one of these Conventions would have some idea what you are talking about. But he didn't, and then like a drove of storm troopers came up, and started talking to me, and I just walked away, I made it seem like I had no idea what StarWars was, I bet they're still scratching their heads about that.

Okay, I just had a recent experience. So, we were in LSN (Government) and we were talking about checks and balances. Well my teacher was talking about what humans do with a lot of power and stuff like that. I get really hyper in that class and I was like, "Oh my gosh, that's like Dumbledore!' Everyone except my best buddy stared at me like I was crazy! eek

Okay, so we got to watch a movie in class on the last day before Christmas break. Our choices were Harry Potter I, or Elf. My two friends and I were spazzing, because, well, it was Harry Potter, wasn't it? Then we started talking about how Ron, Hermione and Harry looked so cute and small! heart Then this guy comes up to us and hears us talking about Harry's squeaky voice. Then he says: "Who?" We just stare at him. "Harry Potter." I say. He stares blankly. "The kid with the glasses." I continue. "The one who survived the killing curse?" My friend says.
It was extremely scary O_O.
And then we had to watch Elf because my two friends and I were the only ones who voted for Harry Potter. -.-

My stories usually come from me talking about something Harry Potter related around my family and then I have stop, explain to them, and then they go "Oh, Aubrey, those are kids books" and I go "ugh, there are people YOUR age who are just as obsessed." They think its childish, THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW!!!! *sorry sweatdrop *

Well, it's been shaded and fixed up a bit since this, but here's the version that she saw. Now tell me, does he honestly look like a girl? (sorry the pic is so big!)

I was so embarrassed. o///o

Quote: Well, it's been shaded and fixed up a bit since this, but here's the version that she saw. Now tell me, does he honestly look like a girl? You're asking for honesty? But I'm always so bluntly honest that people get offended. sweatdrop Okay, well, in my personal opinion it's apparent that it's a male if you carefully study the chin, nose, and eyebrow, but at a quick glance it does look like a girl. Yes, even with the collar because one of best friends is goth and she wears them frequently.
Kitty, I would've voted for Harry Potter, too. Those other people are just normal, boring people. xp I think they look really adorable in the first movie too! 4laugh
