The Headmaster stood at the docks, looking over the water peacefully. He hadn't been here himself since Nash's arrival, neary a year ago; how time had flown! Now Norman found himself upon the edge of the island, awaiting another new student, but this time he wasn't alone.

Scyeth was with him, and it had been no easy feat. The Headmaster had to practically drag the youth by his ear to the harbor (it seems his down-and-out spell was over, which Norman was privately pleased about), although it wasn't so bad when the man informed the student that he'd be helping a new prospective youth to learn the grounds. He had expected as much, attributing it to 'fresh meat' or the like.

He'd chosen Scyeth because the new student, Canaan, came from the other side of the world, nearly the Aussie's polar opposite. It could mean great things...or disasterous. Or both. It was a risk the Headmaster would take, for the sake of the blonde and the new student.

Cane wasn't a fan of cold climates, having come from a hot, dry place, himself, however, most couldn't tell it phased him at all. The native stood, posture perfect, proud even, his hands deep inside his coat pockets as he prepared to be allowed off the boat.

As the crew prepared to unload the new students, who would then meet a tourguide of sorts, Cane watched his breath in the air, thoughtful. A paradox, that he had been taken against his will to a place such as this. Under a man like Norman. The tan boy had no idea if Norman knew how he'd been taken from his home, but he assumed so. From what he knew of the Headmaster, he wasn't the sort to not know things about the students he invited to the school.

It was only a few minutes later that he stepped off the boat onto the dock, blazing blue eyes immediately finding the man himself. Headmaster Prinwaltz. It took him a moment to register one of the crewmen speaking to him, and Canaan frowned until he heard the words.

"Over there, boy, that's your tourguide, I think." He pointed to a slightly injured looking blonde, who stood next to the Headmaster himself. A curt nod from Cane, and he approached the two, his eyes boldly meeting Norman's before shifting to Scyeth.

Getting dragged by his ear was less than easy. Normally, Scyeth could dig in his heels, and b***h, moan, and otherwise protest as much, or as little, as he felt necessary. However, when one was using a crutch and had one hand in a bandage (and their vision impaired, but Scyeth didn't really count that), the whole 'being a rebel' nonsense suddenly became much, much harder. Being dragged was much harder, considering Norman was a timely man and Scyeth was moving at a much slower pace. Yes, dragged was a pretty word to describe the entire situation.

But once they'd settled at the docks, Scyeth felt obligated to voice his feelings about the entire situation. He would not be Scyeth Akazar if he didn't have some opinion on the matter, after all. He had just started on his complaint about this damn crutch, why they hell couldn't they be more comfortable, when the newest youth stepped off the boat. The blond silence and watched, muttering softly to himself when the new student looked to the Headmaster first. Sure, that was the way things should be, but Scyeth obviously had a few things to teach the lad.

This was his school after all, at least, as far as students were concerned.

But then the new boy looked to him, and the soldier-in-training straightened and tossed his head, looking his very damn proudest (as proud as he could, with only one eye visible) as he shifted his weight awkwardly to offer the new student his hand. "Scyeth Akazar, soldier-in-training."

Seemed that would be the way to introduce himself, from now own.

"Welcome to Shinkami."

The silent exchange was not missed by the Headmaster, who was quiet during the invisible battle of wills until Scyeth broke the stillness. Norman smiled quietly, pleased the other was learning what it meant to take charge; all part of his training, and all something he would grasp with ease. "Welcome," he echoed the blonde's sentiments, hands unclasped behind his back to extend in greeting; he had a feeling the youth before them was both watching and...weighing them.

"I'm Norman, the Headmaster of Shinkami. Scyeth here has been assigned to show you the grounds from a student's perspective. He's one of our foremost runners for the soldier program, and as you can see," his dark blue eyes turned jovially over the injured youth's appearance, "he is learning the hard way."

It was not in the Headmaster to be so serious, so a light jab at the blonde was in order. It would, with any luck, lighten the load the foreign teen had to bear. "I would give you the tour myself but I'm afraid I have much paper work to do, with all the new student body and faculty. Should you need anything, anything at all, you can find me in my office most of the time." Norman lifted a sleeved arm and indicated the building just visible beyond the main path. "My door is open at all times.

"It's a pleasure to have met you, Canaan. We look forward to helping you grow."

Cane's large, calloused hand gripped Scyeth in a firm, but brief handshake, his emotions well hidden. "Canaan Kreery, journeyman mechanic." Well, almost journeyman, in his eyes. His autoshop mentor, Loren, had given him the title only two days before Cane had left for ShinKami.

His handshake was transfered to Norman, and he recieved an almost identical grip, the bright eyes scanning the tall man. "My grandmother has spoken of you often, Headmaster." It was all he said, but the tone carried a fair amount of respect. He nodded at the comments about being shown around the school, sliding his palms into his jeans.

Cane wasn't sure how he felt about this place. It was cold, stark... Not like his home. He silently watched the headmaster walk away before letting his eyes work their way over to Scyeth. "Well met," His voice dropped as he turned away, gaze going out over the water. "Pale demon." It wasn't more than a whisper, his thoughts already gone, to his grandmother. The things she would have to say about this place...

Scyeth smirked, pleased Canaan caught his drift. The youth remained silent while he addressed Norman, shifting around to adjust the weight off his injured ankle. If he played it safe, maybe he'd get off these god-awful crutches in the next few days. He was about to say something as Canaan spoke up again. The blond frowned, pushing his good hand through his hair as he tried to figure out what he was saying.

"...you just call me a demon?" he grunted, brushing a hand over his ear before standing squarely. How the hell did he know that? Most people didn't even believe him when he came clean!

Scyeth shook his head and quirked a smile. Maybe there was something to this kid, after all. "Either you're a genius," -very possible, as this was one of the requirements for being at the school,- "or you are one lucky b*****d." The Australian waved his hand and motioned for Canaan to follow him as he hobbled back towards the school. "So where you from, Cane?" Scyeth shortened almost everyone's name. One syllable was so much better.

An interesting response, to say the least. Canaan raised an eyebrow briefly, but didn't respond to Scyeth's comments on his luck. It was technically a slur, from natives to white men, but now he knew it was something more. This boy was an actual demon. Canaan had almost forgotten that they were even here. The blonde also must have very good hearing, to pick up on that.

Following just a half-step behind his guide, his steps were slow, for Scyeth's sake, but not obviously delayed. He had enough respect for another's injuries. Instead, it seemed as if he was taking his sweet time. Cane's voice was a low grunt.

"Northern California. Hoopa Reservation." His face continued to lack expression as he continued. "You from Hell?" ... Was that a joke? Likely. He was an odd sort.

"California. That's in America, right?" Scyeth puzzled. Geography was never his strong point. It was just so dull. He was much more interested in the land surrounding him; where it was good to dirtboard, skateboard or otherwise mess around and get himself injured outside. The Outback did have its fair share of wild terrain, that was for certain.

He had to stop and give Canaan a good look, tipping his head to one side before bursting out in laughter. "Close, close. The Outback was probably hot as hell," he chuckled, shaking his head as he resumed hobbling. The soldier-in-training made for the Science School first, as it was his favorite place, naturally. "So, what school are you going to join? I'm in the science school." Scyeth motioned to his own uniform. "But magic's interesting too. That's how I got all these wounds." A wild-eyed grin. "I blew up. It was ******** amazing."

Well, he was an interesting, talkative boy, but he didn't seem very observant. Cane smiled slightly, nodding slowly. "The Northwestern Coast of North America." Some called it the Lost Coast, actually. Humboldt County was where he was from, to be specific. "Tech, I assume, being a mechanic." He had mentioned that when they'd shook hands. "I don't know much else about the schools."

Magic had blown him up? Canaan had to wonder if it had been sanctioned by the school or not.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 07, 2008 5:24 pm

"No? Well, I don't know much about the School of Magic myself. Just thought I'd try some out." Scyeth had been on a one path track since he'd arrived. Well, no. That was a lie. He actually goofed off for months until he finally stumbled on his dream. It had been lying asleep, but once he'd found it...well, Scyeth had never really been that motivated in his life. (It's true. Very little motivates a desert slug.)

Scyeth halted when they reached the outside of the physical training grounds. He was getting a little sore, and you could see a lot from here. "See, there's the main area for the science labs and stuff," the blond started, pointing to the smaller building. "And this is the physical training grounds." He motioned to the great building they were standing in front of before turning around and pointing to the building across the way. "Those are the magic research labs, and the casting grounds are behind it." Scyeth shuffled around and bumped into Cane, intentionally or not, he didn't give it away.

"So you wanna see the dorms? The mall? Go inside the science school?" Scyeth's grin was a Cheshire one as he practically bounced on the ball of one foot. "I know this school pretty damn well. It's practically my school, at any rate."

There wasn't much for a guy like Canaan to say as Scyeth began pointing structures out. He simply took careful note, sure he wouldn't get lost. As Scyeth bumped into him, it probably felt something like jostling a brick wall, for all that Cane moved. He was a very solid teen.

Still, his face was carefully expressionless, his tone unreadable at the science student's subtle and pseudo-friendly dominance display. "Is it?" A short, brief throaty noise that could have been a chuckle and the stocky, muscular native-american folded his arms across his chest, bright eyes almost amused.

"Science, first." A pause and he raised an eyebrow. "Then mall." He'd never been to a mall before... Whatever territory marking game Scyeth was playing, Cane didn't seem to be a player of. He wasn't bowing down to Scyeth, nor was he actively challenging him. It was as if he didn't view the other boy as a threat, or, really, as if it didn't concern him at all.

Scyeth snorted quietly, mildly annoyed Canaan did not react to the playful bump. "It is," Scyeth confirmed, sentence trailing off in a low hiss. It was completely and entirely his; there was not a student on this island who could even pose a threat. It wasn't over-confidence, it was simply the truth. They were either too young or too foolish or too afraid. And then there were those who simply did not want to be a challenge, something Scyeth was completely fine with. He was a leader. That was the way it was.

Scyeth motioned for Cane to follow him as he trundled along to the entrance of the building. Normally, he'd be riding his board in circles around the boy, but she'd been on hiatus, and now with his his ankle. Sigh. He'd need to find another way to agitate the Native American. There had to be some other way to figure out where he stood.

"You play sports, Cane?"

Finally, he smiled. It was a brilliant effect, lighting his entire dark face, but it disappeared all-too-quickly. "Yes." Cane was, well, quite masculine, and enjoyed contact sports, especially. "Are there teams?" He hoped so. If not, it should be started immediately.

Reaching around the blonde, he opened the door for the other boy, waiting for him to enter as he looked around the hall. Entering the building, his hand slid into the neck of his shirt, pulling out his dream catcher to touch, the large fingers surprisingly gentle.

"As the case may be, most of the kids here are 'academic'." Scyeth had to scowl a little. Of course, he wasn't a school athlete himself, but the boy enjoyed his physical activity. "Currently, I run. Or, not at this very moment, but when my ankle isn't sprained, I run," the blond informed Canaan, hopping up the stairs with surprising agility. He nodded to the other student as he entered and waited for the Native American to catch up.

"Norman told me I could start a team, though." A toothy grin. "I'm open to pretty much anything, you know? I also did board sports at home, but I can adapt. Learn quick." The youth tapped his temple. "What kind of sport you lookin' for?"

Scyeth continued to hobble down doors, pointing out rooms he deemed worth mentioning.

Cane tapped his wide chest with a brief 'thump', a strange look in his eyes as he surveyed the various class and training rooms. "Contact sports." He shrugged, rolling his shoulders smoothly. "Rugby, football, basketball." The native american didn't especially like soccer, though, mainly because he liked to feel the ball in his hands. "I run, as well, in the forests." There were beautiful redwood forests where he was from, full of animals, sunshine, creeks, and the occasional marijuana farmer.

"We need two teams." That was, in fact, true. No point in having a team, unless they played each other. That strange, brief smile flickered across his face again. "Science vs Magic isn't fair I'd think." At least he'd gotten the tan boy talking? Albeit, his odd humor was rising to the top.
