Yazmina had a certain fascination with the stars. Not that she knew all that much about them, but she did love to watch them, especially after the others were asleep. Quiet seemed important to truly appreciate them. Now and then, she spotted one that seemed to get brighter then dimmer, then bright again and she wondered why that was. Was it falling? Turning? She'd learn the answer one day.

For now, she was content just to watch. When she heard someone approaching, she barely turned her head. If she took her eyes off it, she might have trouble finding that particular star again. Instead, she tilted an ear toward the newcomer and asked, "Aren't they wonderful?" Her nose was still pointed at the sky.

User Image Night, the crispness of it caressing him like a blanket, like a mother's breath blowing against his back. Ebony tail flicked behind him as he wandered the open under the star gilded skies and the moon hanging low along the horizon, its glow illuminating the mountains. Not a cloud was to be seen and anything white came to gleam much like his own unmarked hide. The black rose brand remained unseen on his flank as his equally black eyes scanning the area, for anyone and anything.

He soon did spot something, its coat a gleam like his own in the night's essence. But other colors remained darkened in the glow of the whiteness, he noted the lion like tail of the stranger and of the wings that laid across its back. Nikolas silently, or thought he was silent, started toward this stranger, the scent of it meeting his nose when he was close enough signaling to him that it was indeed a female. Well, well, he certainly was having luck then. Stopping a bit at a distance, a voice seemed directed toward him even if the head of the mare remained skyward watching the stars that flickered in and out over head. 'Aren't they wonderful?' was the question that was asked, he could have answered in many ways. One was quite rude, others were lesser, he chose to go with one that wasn't so much of rude, but not quite that open minded either.

"I would suppose so, if one knew exactly what one was looking at besides the flickering glow of objects that we all consider as stars." He answered not really looking upwards, his eyes still watching the mare from behind. When his eyes did wander skyward, his hooves brought him be stand beside the mare. "Sometimes you have to wonder what makes them flicker like that.." his head tilting a little away from the mare still looked skyward.

Well, it was a stallion, that much was clear just by listening to his voice. "Yes," she agreed. "Exactly. I often wonder that myself. And why only some of them do it and the others don't. And why it changes sometimes," she went on. "It's almost like they're playing games or doing it on purpose, but that couldn't be, could it?

She looked over at him finally, then looked again. "And good evening. Don't mind all those questions," she told him. "You don't have to answer them."

Nikolas watched the mare from the corner of his eye as she spoke of the stars. She sounded much like a foal to him, one always wondering why the sky was blue and the grass was green. Shaking his head and letting ebony locks flop from one side of his neck to the other. Teh, he could really careless about the stars really. They were just something that many looked upon at night for something to do.

"Don't worry, I wasn't thinking of answering them anyways." He huffed roughly before stepping away from the mare. "In truth, I could careless about them. All they are, are something that most looked at for something to do."

Not that he wanted to sound rough or mean or anything... Well maybe he wanted to, who knew with him. Away from his brother, Nikolas wasn't the same as Kristopher and he wasn't really interested in talking about things such as stars. His last encounter with someone that always said that stars were stupid gave him the idea that they weren't that special after all. Nikolas almost seemed to want to dare others to prove him wrong.

It was the tone more than the words that made her look down and at the stallion again. She'd dealt with "don't care" before. Dia was exceptionally good at that now and then. Hers usually meant she was annoyed, though. This one sounded different.

She turned to face him, though she didn't follow. "I suppose they could be just something to do for some, but I'm sure there better things if you just want to keep busy. Walking or grazing or swimming, if you like that sort of thing. Watching the stars is different. Did you know," she offered, "some tell stories and say they used to be Soquili that did magnificent things and so were placed in the sky so they could be remembered."

Stopping, Nikolas looked back at the mare as she spoke of stories and what not. Stories? He hadn't heard many stories from anyone about the stars. He had always known that they were just dots in the skies where some thought that there was more life on them. Where he had come from there were other things to tell from the stars and stories weren't one of them.

"No I didn't know. Where I came from we didn't tell stories about the stars being of other soquili or anything like that." He began half turning his head away. "They were just dots that people thought there were more life. Pathetic. If you ask me, the sky would look a lot nicer without them blocking the inky blackness."

Not quite moving from his spot and not looking away from the mare, Nikolas just stood there. His mind churning with things of his assorted past and what they meant to him now. Just about worthless, things he had done to get where he was and then some. He never really looked to the future, if there was someone out there for him, they were sure taking their time in coming out of hiding. Snorting he looked away, neither up nor down, but straight a head toward the mountains and the horizon. There was where his destiny laid whether anyone else was there or not...

A sky without the stars? Yazmina couldn't imagine. Didn't want to, really. She looked again, just in case they'd suddenly winked out, but that was silly. She knew they wouldn't just disappear. And the stallion was more interesting, really. She'd never heard someone call the stars pathetic before.

"Where do you come from? If I can ask." He probably wouldn't like it, but she'd asked anyway. "I wasn't born here either," she offered. "But I'm learning to like it. I'm Yazmina, by the way."

He looked back at the mare as she asked of where he had come from. That was a good question, he didn't really remember where he was from before waking in these lands. From there he was from the mountains, where he lived with his brother. Black eyes narrowing a little he looked away from Yazmina as she mentioned her own name.

"Mine's Nikolas. And I don't know where I come from. Nor does it seem to matter, I'm here." He snorted as he started walking again. "It seems that some of use are just strangers around to those born here. Much like my brother and I."

He kept walking, not caring if the mare followed him. The last one he ran into wasn't the nicest, nor was she the brightest. He guessed that one had been hurt in some manner, but he wasn't going to hunt her down to ask. Mind consumed with other things, he hadn't really noticed that he had stopped walking again, not really knowing why, but he looked back to see if Yazmina had followed him. Not that he cared or anything, he wasn't doing much that evening... Besides wandering and searching for a new place to rest during the day.

"Of course it matters," Yazmina said gently. "Everyone started somewhere, whether we can find it again or not." Though it made her sad to think of not being able to go home--her first home--ever again. It would be a long trip, but if she needed to make it, she could. There was a little comfort in that for her.

She did follow after him, one cautious step and then another. He didn't seem to particularly want company, so she didn't want to crowd him. He'd stopped again, though, and there was no point in shouting if he was already feeling like an outsider. So yes, she followed, then stopped again when the stallion did.

"Everyone's a stranger before they've met someone. Now we've met so that's a little something." It was a step, at least. "Your brother's not out with you?"

Nikolas turned back toward Yazmina as she indeed followed him this far, a little tag tail he would have to assume. With her curiosity, it might be something at would get her into trouble some day and no one would be there to bail her out of it. But he doubted that him being there really mattered that much. He was just a shadow to the world, someone who didn't really have a place or purpose, just... A shadow. That is what he and his brother have come to consider themselves. Shadows forever chasing the day light and that was around the corner if he remained standing there talking to the mare.

"If you say so. My home is very far away from here, another time, another life. One I've very much forgotten, though glimpses still remain and urges still present themselves whenever the mind becomes weak." At this moment his black eyes were watching Yazmina's throat. Watching the flesh rise then settle when she breathed or swallowed. "Much like this time, would be worse if I hadn't fed before stumbling across you." His eyes looked away from her, averting his gaze as to not let the old ways creep back to his mind again.

"And no, my brother isn't out here. He's home tending to the fledgelings. They are still learning and I seek a more appropriate place to teach them the ways of the night." He added to her last question, "And my brother is much stronger then I am, he's more used to these lands then I am. I would rather just watch it pass me by. Like a shadow shrinking and lengthening when the sun comes and goes. Seems like the only way to live around this place."

She hadn't been looked at in quite that way before, so it made her a little nervous. She shifted her weight from hoof to hoof, wings unfolding a little and feathers spreading, just in case. She hadn't completely displayed them. She wasn't ready to take flight, but just in case. Her heart beat a little faster, even more visible in her throat.

She'd heard about the demons--the kalona--but never met one. Still, she'd been told that they looked different. Not like most of the Soquili, and Nikolas didn't fit that description. One ear now tipped slightly away in case this brother suddenly appeared and one tipped toward Nikolas, she said, "Choosing to just stand and watch is fine, if that's really what you like. I like to meet others. That must seem silly to you."
PostPosted: Fri Nov 21, 2008 6:13 pm

Nikolas had looked back and watched her shift nervously and let her wings unfold themselves some from where they had been held. He wasn't really looking to hurt her, he hadn't really the need to. The berries he had eaten earlier had sated his hunger for anything else, though his tongue did still run over his elongated fangs that remained hidden beneath his lip. He knew his brother wouldn't be out, he was too worried about the safety of the little ones that had come to live with them. Ijn and others. No, Kristopher wouldn't leave them to come looking for him, he wasn't that nice after all.

"Others just mean trouble, given if you tangle with the wrong ones." He pointed out, though everyone should know that already. "I haven't met others like that, only a few that weren't of much interest." But he wasn't about to speak of one that got annoyed with him some time ago. "you are welcomed to leave, or follow. I search for a new place to sleep during the day. I can't stand the sunlight, neither can my brother for that matter even though the poor fool wanders out into it a lot." He shook his head wondering just what his brother found in it in the first place.

Curious though she was, she did know better than to just wander off into the darkness with a stallion that made her uneasy. If Diego had been with her, or even one of the other mares, it would have been different. But since she was alone, she thought better of the idea.

"No," she answered. "I won't trouble you if you're going to sleep." She hesitated, then took one more step after him. "There's a willow," she offered. "Down the path ahead of you. If you bend to the left when you find the broken rock, you'll find a pasture and on the far side a bent willow. It's fronds are so long they sweep the ground and it's quite shaded underneath them. You'd have to duck through them to find the shadows but...you could probably rest there."

He shook his head a little before looking off into the distance thinking that he had seen something, but only concluded that he was seeing things. Looking back at the mare he noted that she had come a step closer to him, though was hesitant of it. Nikolas has spent most of his live observing things and he could tell that she wasn't very comfortable around him. Not many did, then again he didn't know anyone who would be comfortable around him. He was after a monster to most if not everyone besides his brother and those that lived with them.

"It will have to be larger then that. My brother and I have a few little ones that are living with us as well." Well at least one other anyways. "Where we reside now is a secluded glen in the middle of a ring of mountains." He looked off toward the surroundings again, something was nagging at him, thought he didn't know what exactly.

Nikolas stepped closer to Yazmina, while his eyes looked around at the shadows that dragged the ground like twisted claws waiting to rake anyone and everyone into an awaiting mouth. Something wasn't right, nor did he really want to say anything. Head turning slowly he looked past the mare, almost daring whatever it was out there to come out and show itself. A lip rolling back, revealed a fang that might have been from a predator, but he rarely used it for much anymore.

"This place doesn't feel safe anymore." He muttered softly, "Not sure what's out there, but I get the sinking feeling it can't be all that good." Not really caring what Yazmina did, he wasn't going to be sticking around, turning again he started walking, though black eyes remained ever watchful*

It was an offer. Somewhere to start. She'd been trying to be helpful, but she really should have considered that it wouldn't be enough space. He had mentioned his brother after all, and the fledglings, though she hadn't known exactly what that meant. Well. Fledglings she understood, but he didn't speak of them as though they were birds.

"It sounds like my home. My old home," she amended, when he mentioned where they lived. "Though I'm sure that's not possible." Particularly given that he wasn't an alicorn. "Still, I have fond mem--"

She trailed off when he stepped closer, picking up on his wariness. She began to look around as well, but she looked to him in time to spot that fang. He must be a kalona. Part of one, at least. Despite herself, she was even more curious now. And ever more nervous. She gave one half-unconscious flap of her wings, then settled them again by force of will.

"I don't hear anything," she all but whispered, but her hide was twitching. "Still. Maybe we should go somewhere else." He'd already started off, after all. She hesitated. She could fly back home if need be, but what if whatever was out there had wings as well.

She shook herself and followed after him, trotting a few steps to catch up.
