I just received an assignment for my Early Modern Brit Lit class that included the instructions to:

Read a poem we have studied aloud to friends and family over Thanksgiving Break. Write a reflection on their reactions.

Now, my family is a bunch of losers who won't listen or react appropriately, and I can't trust them with my homework. So, I turn to you, my friends of the SG, to help me pass.

I have posted below a link to an audio recording of me reading Shakespeare's Sonnet 116. The text will be posted below it. All I ask is that you guys listen to my reading, and post a 1-2 sentence reaction to the poem.

A fair warning; due to my lisp, the alliterated "s" sounds came off rather harsh, so I recommend you keep your volume relatively low.

And go!

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O, no, it is an ever fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken
It is the star to every wandering bark
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within His bending sickle's compass come
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

You should have chosen Sonnet #1.
I memorized that one a few years ago and got it's meaning.

There's a site with all the details for the poems. I'll try and dig it up.

Well, yes, but I just want to know your reaction to the poem as read aloud, etc.

I'd like to say that your audio contained some words not included in your typed one here. Also, I read and listened to it more than once. Is that okay? eek

I guess my physical reaction was one of a bit of shock, but understood as I thought about it in my mind. However, though I couldn't really understand some words, (I'm not knowledgeable in Shakespeare's works enough to truly understand how he writes) what I got out of it is that love is not a "fragile" emotion, but is even strong enough to endure/withstand even Death; and if it was not, then Shakespeare would have never written [anything OR this poem, I'm still pondering] and no men would ever have felt loved or loved another. Well, those are my thoughts for now, I guess.

So i loved it. I specifically thought that it was cool how he was saying that Love isn't love if it's easily altered. I suppose the time period in which it was written is shown when he calls Love something that will always be the same and endure, which parallels the Biblical verses about the same topic. Also, I felt that if every there was someone who would just out and out say something, it would be Shakespeare. He always put his true feelings down in a way that didn't offend people but convinced them instead, and I really liked that.

I didnt pay attention because I hate poetry with a passion, BUT I wanted to say that I really, really like your voice. And that you dont sound like I imagined like your avi.

Thanks, Ret and Nymmie.

I still need a few more reactions, it doesn't have to be anything spectacular but just a sentence or two!

I love you. "Good evening everybody. For this episode of 'I have a goddamn paper to do'...." (I also like your voice. ;3)

Shakespeare is confusing here, but its cool. He has a cool main idea, but he's very vauge.

Was there another line between "height be taken" and "within his bending sickle"?

xD I like the disclaimer at the end. "If I'm wrong, you never saw me write this, and no one was ever loved. ;D"

Erm, yes. XD It seems that in transcribing the poem from my book, I missed a line. Fixed nao.

Also, I'm glad so many people love my NPR voice. xd
