Okay earlier this year we had to regress in drinking cups. My son originally went from bottle to "straw" cups that he did great with, never had a problem until he suddenly started chewing holes through the straws, and I just couldn't afford to constantly replaces the cups all the time.

So, I reverted to regular sippy cups, no-spill etc.

My problem is, now the little hellion will either A)shake his cup and down hard enough until there's a puddle of drink on the table to play with (this habit I can usually stop BEFORE he does it) or B) he'll get a mouthful of his drink and then spit it out all over the table, so he can "play" in it.

I've tried timeouts, spanking, telling him "no", and simply cleaning up then taking his cup away.

Nothing seems to be working. Any ideas?

My Tristan did this when he first started drinking out of a sippy cup. What I later found out, though, was that the drink in his cups wasn't worth drinking as much as wasting. >_>

What I did whenever he spilled his drink was I A) took the cup away, B) Gave him a towel and told him to clean his mess, C) Gave him the cup back and told him if he did it again, he'd have another mess to clean, but no more drink.

It took a little while, but Tristan hates cleaning up after himself, so he got the message and he's completely stopped. All you really gotta do is be consistant with the punishment. 3nodding

Chewing can be a nervous habit, and honestly, I don't think punishing him for it (as long as he's not biting someone) is warranted.

He's still a chewer of straws, so I've switched the VERY cheap disposable ones. They wash fine in the dishwasher and his straws are always chomped on, but it saves on that expense. Also, the straws are a harder material than the Playtex ones, so it makes it harder. They are not nonspill, but I am pretty big on the kids eating and drinking in the kitchen only.

My son Matthew's had his Straw sippy bottle thing for quite a few months, now he's just over 14months and has started as you say Nibbling through the expensive bottle top shaped like a straw. I think it's just a phase with teething and in all honestly we have a few packets of like 100 cheap straws for £0.99p which one will last a good week and if he's not gotten through/lost/destroyed it by then is easily washed. If your son is around the 1 year mark or more maybe try him with the cheap straws and an "Adult" glass/cup, My matt loves it and though he's wanted to drink out of his own cup less and less he's learning really well, we're still holding it for him but he's handling straws like a pro. In a month or two I don't even think he'll need us to hold him for it and he's learning that if he shakes it, it gets taken away with all forms of juice, when he spills we tell him no and we're noticing the difference, he certainly does it less.
