Physical familiars
Physical familiars can be any sort of animal. Typically, they are of a species a person feels drawn to anyways. Physical familiars are often recognized due to their obsession with a persons altar, magickal objects (such as tarot cards or athames), or jewelry. They will often walk right into a closed circle without disturbing the energies or working taking place. Occasionally, they will lend their energy to the working. They normally communicate through blatant body language or by projecting feelings. Occasionally, they can "speak" to a person, in the same sort of way an astral familiar can speak to a person.
While it is nice to be able to see and touch a familiar, physical familiars do have their draw backs. They commonly move objects to suit their mood (much, much more so than the common pet). Also, due to the mortal nature of all things living, they will eventually die, despite commonly leading a longer than average life. When this occurs, they occasionally return as an astral familiar.

Astral familiars
Astral familiars can take the shape of any sort of ?natural? animal, or any mythological creature. The person they choose is not always capable of "seeing" them, but will instead sense their presence. They can communicate through feelings or words. Many people say they only get feelings from their familiars, but are often able to "translate" into words when dealing with the everyday. With things of a magickal nature, this "translation" can become more difficult. They lend their magick to a working, but tend to rely on the person to help provide them with energy.

Spirit guides
Spirit guides are different from familiars in once basic way. They do not lend energy to, or interfere with, magickal workings. Their role, instead, is to help a person make decisions, and choose the best course for their life. They do not always stay as long as an astral familiar, despite being astral themselves. It is common for a spirit guide to pop up, help a person through a tricky time, then leave. A spirit guide may become a familiar over time, though.

Is there any particular way that someone should try and introduce themselves to their familiars and spirit guides? How do you call them to you, especially the astral ones?

i think they find you cuz my spirit guide my little kitty cat found me more then the other way round and she just sticked around familiars i don't know haven't met any yet

Familiars and spirit guides will frequently come to you. They enjoy introducing themselves in odd ways. Sometimes they will come to you and you wont notice them, but thats rather rare and only seen in people who have extreme diffuculites sensing any sort of energies. (A friend of mine in HS had this problem, they turned to me to get her attention).
But random ways I've seen familiars introduce themselves includes standing right in your path (especailly when your in a hurry XD), intruding in on a meditation session, coming to you in a dream, then being there the next morning, and many, many other ways. Alot of how they come to you depends on both your and their personalities.
If you can be sure that you have a familiar of certain variety (ex. a raven), you can do something ot attract its attention (ex. leaving out a charged shiny object). This would change with whatever your familiar might be.

Indeed. xd They often take tiny bits of energy from you, but it is normally repaid about a 1000 times over.
They tend to vocal over your tools you use in any magickal working. I got an athame today and my familiars (two of which are dragons) demanded I get the dragon one. Since it felt good to me, I got it. Now they keep perching on the "shiny". It does help if your familiars feel a fondness for your tools as well as you appreciating your tools. Since they are often involved in your workings, this is important. Plus, they are often good judges of energy and character.

That's interesting. I'm not much of a cat person, unless its' one of the really big ones, especially tigers. Drizz't does seem to like my crystals though...I'll be doing a working tomorrow night for the first time with him around; we'll see how it goes.

Are there any ways that are reccommended to better uncover your familiar or to help their presence become known to you?
I'm not sure if my familiar will present itself until I become more accquainted with Wicca and begin praciticing or if it will make itself known before then and be my guide.

It depends on both and the familiar as to when they show up. Some people practice their entire lifes without a familiar. I practiced for 5 years before my first showed up. Then the other two followed.
There are several ways to find your familiar though. There are some meditations for this purpose, though I do not know anyway. I shall look for you, though. Some people, once they've mastered Astral projecting, find their familiars that way. And some people are led to their familiars by tohers. (which is how Missy got Lith)
And a quick tip- dont hem yourself in yet with wicca- its really best when first becoming pagan to remain just that- pagan. Research and look at different sects then decide if wicca is right for you. ^^

I was intending to be more eclectic then just picking with one sect and staying with it. The freedom to choose what you believe is what drew me to paganism in the first place.
