Darn it! Alyssum instantly straightened from her crouched position, chasing after the chubby cheeked creature she had been watching for the past hour. A fluff of red-brown with a poof of a tail, it's stop-motion movements had instantly intrigued her, as well as its determined trip from tree to tree to gather the crunchy nuts into its mouth. But... what was the purpose? If it would stop and nibble on some, then it would make sense. Everybody had to get food! But it just kept... gathering them. And stopping to bury some in the ground, but that action made even less sense. A nut wouldn't do any good under the ground, as far as the mare knew.

Still, maybe if she followed the creature long enough she would be able to make some sense of its strange behavior. The dabbled mare trotted at a distance more imposed by her quarry than herself; if she tried to get any closer, then it would just dash away, more concerned with getting away from her than continuing on its own hunt. Plus, the scattered, dry leaves on the ground crunched beneath her hooves, making it impossible for her to try any form of stealth. This was was best, at least for now...

User ImageChimalsi had long ago accepted that he was not the most attentive of beings when it came to everyday matters. It was true that he waited on his quiet love at all hours - catering to desires before they were even voiced to keep from appearing unworthy - but anything beyond that remote point usually escaped his notice. The squirrel and its unusually large, brown shadow happened to be one of those things, falling into the overlooked category while he instead kept track of his feet, able to admire the gold splash of hooves without actually considering them a part of himself. The kirin was not necessarily vain, though he could often be found studying his reflection in surfaces that permitted it. Actually, he was more interested in the weight around his neck that acted as a connector of sorts to his treasure trove than he was tickled by the sculpted planes of face and horn. That didn't mean that he was incapable of appreciating the bronzed-sunflower sheen of his scales, the melted honeycomb of his eyes; but all of it belonged to his precious sweetheart, and that was why it was acceptable to gaze upon with even fleeting adoration. So long as the boundaries were clear, he foresaw no issues, at least not in the same way a casual observer might.

The appearance of disturbed ground, however, was more than enough to draw him out of the shallow run of his thoughts. He was aware that crafty two-leggers often buried things to hide them, and he had uncovered a goodly amount of beautiful offerings just from brushing stray soil aside and taking a look. If it was in the ground, even newly-implanted as it appeared to be, then the item was fair game to any who came across it. Territory never came into play, unless it was his to defend and slaughter for.

Keeping such ideas at the forefront of his mind, the bearded stallion lowered his head toward the spot intently, snuffling curiously and ready to search when a furry shape darted suddenly across his vision. He drew back in sharp surprise, pale brows raising when the little mammal chittered in what he could only assume to be reprimand. The stallion sidestepped a little nervously, wondering what he had done to earn the creature's ire while still focusing on the potential hidden in the hole it was guarding. His movement brought him around to see the mare that had been tailing the rodent, and he halted to stare at her, wondering if she too was about to deny his attempt.

Finally! The little nut-gatherer had slowed to an acceptable distance, and the ultimate destination of the shell-covered seeds in its cheeks was going to be revealed! Alyssum's motions slowed, not wanting to frighten the creature any further, though her curiousity continued to propel her forward. At least until she caught sight of the glint.

The glint made her hooves stop all together, and the rodent on the ground, though at the forefront of her mind mere instants before, disappeared from her perception. Her eyes widened, and even her tail, momentarily flicking from the excitement from her 'chase' stilled. What... what was this?

Gold, of course. She knew what gold was, at least in its raw form, a glittering, hard thing, pretty when other rocks split open to reveal it. Not her favorite material by far, not as long as there were bright yellow daffodils, large sunflowers with their black faces following the giant ball of light that gave them their name, or black-eyed susans peeking out of the tall grass, but still pretty.

'Pretty' wasn't the word for the creature in front of her, though, and even Alyssum knew it. The darker ripples of gold across the parts not covered with rich snake-scales , the bronzed hair that formed his mane, beard, and lining of his back, even the two-pronged horn the likes of which she had never seen before, some combination of unicorn and antler charmingly placed in the middle of his face... 'pretty' was an inadequate term. Even the large circle drapped around his neck looked formidable in its matching perfection, a heavier version of her own dreamcatcher while lacking its intricate designs and colorful personality.

After taking all of this in, the mare could not keep a tone of awe from her voice, even as she asked only a simple question, "Did... you see where the nut-gatherer went, Golden One?"

If the shared gaze they participated in lasted for an unusually long second, the kirin was socially inept enough to think nothing of it, more curious after she failed to rush him and add her mare screams of fury to the mix. Her appearance was young, dark save for her mop of white mane, and his observations all but ended there, nothing brilliant enough to draw further contemplation out of single-mindedness. His head canted quizzically when she spoke, almost ignoring the title as he glanced down to find that the squirrel had indeed disappeared, the patch of loose dirt he'd been eyeing nothing more than a hole where the abhorrent little thing had taken advantage of a few distracted moments. He snorted softly, nostrils flaring even as he lifted a heavy hoof, peering beneath it as though expecting the thing had hidden there. No such luck. Chimalsi lowered his head between his legs, his foremost horn lightly grazing the ground to leave soil in the spiraling channels as he monitored the area beneath his banded belly. When nothing was to be found there either, the stallion straightened his neck and turned in a half-circle, keeping one molten, chary eye on the female while the other occupied itself with picking out the moving shapes amidst the dead landscape.

A dart of reddish movement made his head swing fully around, necklace banging dully against his chest as he spied the fluffy rat beating a hasty retreat, the bulge in its cheek speaking of the object he had lost out on. But he would not be deprived for long, not if he had anything to say about it, rare though his words could be in company. A quick glance back reminded him of the mare's presence, and he nodded his muzzle toward where the beast had taken off, directing her just before he set off in pursuit himself.

Dark ears flattened against his skull to grant greater speed, his Leo-tail swinging in deceptive merriment while his cropped mane danced blindingly bright in shivery motion. Surely the little mammal that had attracted his attention had not started out the day thinking that it would be chased by two such creatures, its decisions suddenly becoming a commitment to flee for life and limb. And yet never before had one's interest and another's intensity been so sorely misjudged by a squirrel. The idea to purposefully harm had not quite alighted in Chimalsi's tangled mind, but he was undoubtedly large enough to be suspect. Until the gem or metal was officially added to his collection, it was safe to assume he was merely looking to apprehend.

Alyssum watched the movements, tilting her head in confusion as the majestic stallion first raised a hoof and then peered under himself. The actions were simple, almost childish, and the mare could not stop a small smile from rising to her face. The expression vanished, however, whenever one of those golden eye pinned itself directly on her. She instinctively took a step back, her black hooves lightly disturbing the dust beneath them. What was he thinking? Did he disapprove of her name for him? Had she done something else to disturb him?

The movement of his bearded muzzle knocked these thoughts from her mind, and if his small motion was not enough to demand a response, his sudden transformation into a dash of gold certainly was. A small twitch in her thight led to an explosion of motion of her own, the turquoise dream catcher bouncing against her chest. She threw her blazed head up towards the sun, eager and willing to continue her pursuit of knowledge, even if now she needed to find out more.

The aid of the golden stallion excited her; though she did not know why he had silently agreed to join her hunt, she was cerain that with help they would be able to discover just what the nut-gatherer was doing. She added on speed, enjoying the feel of the sheen of sweat that gathered on her coat, the burn spreading throughout her leg muscles, and the way her mane and tail lifted from the momentum of her run. Her violet eyes focused on the glimmering creature before her, having lost sight of her original target, but trusting him to lead her on this adventure.

All of these emotions found their outlet in a whinny of joy, and Alyssum's confidence bubbled beneath the surface. They were going to get that fluffball yet!

There was no way of knowing if the mare had obeyed or not, his concentration situated exclusively in front of him, meant only for tracking the smaller creature down. High shrubs and trees turned to a blurred, warm palette that left the back of his throat dry and confused his vision, darts of red almost enough to draw him from the primary quarry if he hadn't been so keen on capture. His sharp hooves could have severed roots and cleaved rocks in their rush, but they barely seemed to touch the earth as he extended his neck and willed his body to go faster, scaly hide dashing bits of pale light into freckles of gold. Several times, he was almost close enough to lean down and seize its bushy tail with his teeth, but then it swerved and he had to slow to switch directions, snorting loud enough to make the vegetation shudder. It wasn't until he heard the trumpeting glee from behind him that he accepted the girl was still there, following like a dappled shadow chasing down its counterpart. But drifts of shade did not care for dimensions, even though this one apparently did, the comparison deteriorating rapidly from there. If anything, she was the more lively of the two, especially in action.

Finally appearing to wise up, the squirrel wound its way toward a nearby tree trunk, its furry hindquarters working furiously in concert with its paws as it scrabbled to a less accessible point. Chimalsi skidded to a halt, barely avoiding breaking his soft snout on the bark as he half-pranced around, canting his head to peer up into the branches. He spied the winded thing on a low-hanging limb, its tiny chest puffing along with its cheeks, clearly mocking his attempts to catch it. Frustration wormed through his spine, making the mohawk of fluff along his back bristle faintly while he strutted beneath the tree, still trying to catch a glimpse of whatever had been nabbed. On some level, he knew it was a hopeless effort, and that dampened his anger some, but he was still curious about what it was he'd missed out on.

Shifting most of his weight onto strong back legs, the stallion reared himself up and placed his cloven front feet securely on the tree, stretching heavenward to harass the tiny mammal further. It swished its tail at him, nearly catching his eyes with the swipe even as he snuffled inquisitively, trying to discern man-made markers or if the treasure had a more natural mainspring. Unable to balance for long, he dropped back down with an audible thump, shaking out his whiskered head and looking around. The female was there, and he approached her confidently, having disregarded her earlier awe. "Did you see what it carried?" He queried, his tone suited to his appearance, all melted ore and butterscotch. If she knew, he wouldn't have to wait and watch, attention already slipping to other possible haunts where he had been successful before. He couldn't waste the entire day chasing after an item that had grown legs, not when his beloved expected him to return with something worthwhile.

The squirrel wasn't the only winded beast, as even the spirited Alyssum found her sides heaving, the cadence of her canter slowing to a gallop, that gallop deteriorated into a trot, and the trot finally dissolved into slow steps. She had never lost sight of that glimmering figure ahead of her, and now as she panted to catch her breath she followed him to the tree. The sight of the bushy-tailed creature scurrying up the tree made her paw the ground, the only visual sign of distress. Damned nutgatherer! Now she would never know why he was hoarding away all of that food!

Her ears curved to capture the words that dripped like honey from the Golden One's tongue, and her cream tail swished as she self-conciously shook her body to try and remove the lather from her fur. She had no trouble with her looks, possessing a natural awareness of her own attractive qualities, but compared to a being that shone in the sun, snake-scaled and practically hovering over the grass when he moved... well, anything she could do to make herself not fade in the background would help.

"Nuts," she replied, motioning towards more of the cruncy bits that littered the ground beneath the trees. "He's been taking them, stuffing his cheeks and then... burying them. Burying them in the ground! But why would he need so many? Why would put them all in one place? That's why I kept chasing him, trying to figure it out..."

A huff left her black-tipped muzzle as her ears dropped and her rapid heartbeat began to slow. Now she'd never know. Raising her head again to look her companion in the eye, she asked, "What... did you think he had, Golden One?"

Remembering how to be civil was a bit of a chore, but he stood quiet and waited for her to gather up wind for a reply, watching as she shook the sweat off her flanks without an ounce of apparent distaste. Everything perspired, even he did, occasionally, though his back and the parts of him coated in bright mail often stayed remarkably dry. When a flung droplet from her landed on his leg, he barely paid it mind, glancing down only once to ascertain what it was before returning to his vigilant state. The answer she gave so simply made his ears flip back, almost as though he suspected they had deceived him of hearing correctly. But her motion toward the ground made him turn and stare, only partially listening to her extended recital of events. Nuts. Not badges or beads or even worn metalwork: only the bits and pieces of foodstuff that the red-shined rodent had left behind in its tree scaling escapades.

He didn't look back to her immediately when she questioned him, letting the findings process while he scanned through the evidence, the remnants of acorns peppering the ground like so many dead and dismembered little soldiers. The tuft on his striped tail hesitantly swept through them, as though expecting something to be hidden within the shells. But overturning them showed only emptiness, their green-tinted meat removed from golden-brown encasement. Anger for his mistake could have come easily to the fore, but it was a cousin of tired exasperation that was instead working through him. An inaudible sigh moved through his shoulders, the gesture so slight that it might have been missed by an unaware observer. The luck which had once securely walked in step with him seemed to have chosen another path, one where little mares did not stand hopefully nearby.

"Something else," Chimalsi said after a few slow heartbeats, righting his neck and giving the dainty female his full attention once again. The squirrel was no longer of interest, and she seemed more than prepared to pick up the slack with her expressive eyes. Earlier words trickled in when the disappointment ebbed, and he considered them before adding. "They store food for wintertime, so that they will not starve when it becomes too cold. That is why." He saw nothing strange in her curiosity, phrasing the obvious in much the same way that she had done for him mere moments ago.

Amethyst eyes kept their focus carefully on the precious being before her, watching him dip his head to study the nuts beneath them, his tail swish through the shells, like a fish through rippling water, even noting, however unconciously, the slight rise and fall of his shoulders as he released a breath deeper than his usual ones. What was he thinking as he made these motions? His face betrayed no emotion that she could read, and her tail began to mimic his own motions, accentuated by a few extra, more violent flicks as brown shells became entangled in her light hair.

When he spoke, she listened attentively to the words that seemed to hang in the air between them, allowing them to fully sink in. Her eyes narrowed at his enigmatic answer, the first kindling of a fiery curiousity sparking inside of her. She had no business prying into the object he sought, and her mind moved quickly to the information provided by him. Her eyes shone with satisfaction, and she could not stop her whinny of excitement as she exclaimed, "That makes perfect sense! The nuts will not rot in the ground like fruit or other foods... and if he can only remember where they are, then he'll be all set when the snow falls!"

Then, as if self-concious about her energy in the face of the stallion's constant coolness, she grew silent for a moment, tossing her mane to give herself a chance to recover. "Thank you, Golden One for telling me. I appreciate it. Is there something I can do to help you? Maybe I can help you find what you were looking for?"

Ever reserved, the stallion said nothing to her momentary adoption of his gestures, the mirror-like properties somehow registering as normal in his eyes. When her all-hair tail became agitated with its stowaways, he stepped closer so that his own delicately tufted one could circle out and reach to brush the remaining shells off with a few light strokes, the armored plates near the top of the appendage stretching like a slender-fluted serpent. It was a thoughtless act, more to soothe himself than anything to help the mare, putting things back into their proper places. Her intensely curious stare, too, went unnoticed, and he moved back just in time to catch her enthusiastic outburst, the horn parallel to his skull scraping absently on a branch he hadn't looked up to see as he took a quick step away. "Yes." He answered lightly, nose wrinkling ever so slightly as he shook his great head loose, the short, coppery swing of his mane easily slipping from the grip of twigs. "Sense and snow, that's exactly right."

When the glee had receded back into a tepid kind of quiet, he mentally went over the list of places where he had struck gold before, the contemplations grinding to a halt when her voice once again pierced the stillness. It was only thanks this time, however, and he nearly nodded his acceptance of it when she suddenly went on, forcing him to give her greater attention. The mare who's name he hadn't asked for in their brief stint as fellow pursuers seemed to feel indebted, though he certainly hadn't said or done anything above the ordinary. Chimalsi shifted a little on his feet, thinking even as he listened to the squirrel chancing an escape behind him, its claws loud on the bark. No one had ever asked him such a thing before, and his first, instinctive reaction was to decline a little coolly. His love was founded purely by his own actions, and interference in that was not to be tolerated.

Then again, the valuables he retrieved meant little until they were brought into the cavern, the place where he felt the precious items begin to resonate, strong enough to rattle his teeth if he held them in his mouth. Supposing this helpful little girl would merely pick them up and leave them at the yawning opening of his home, he could get twice as much done and his darling would not feel cheated. Another positive shake of his head came, this one more slowly than the first as he worked out the details. "If you would like. Follow me."

Alyssum resisted the urge to jump when the stallion's tail interacted with her own, gently brushing away the shells she could not remove herself. She wanted to repeat her thanks, but his own short responses gave her the impression that he was not comfortable with her bouts of nervous speech; in response, she bit back her instinctive responses, waiting instead for him to answer her own question.

When he gave his consent, a smile spread across her muzzle as she followed behind him, uncertain of where he would lead, but certainly willing to follow. She half-closed her eyes to savor the sunlight that filtered through the trees, both the warmth against her chocolate coat and the manner in which it made the Golden One shine. He seemed in his element, his colors complenting the shade of the trees that had begun to change. She half-wondered if he too changed to match the season, becoming a glorious green in the spring and summer, a gleaming white in the winter.

Despite her wish to keep him comfortable, her curiousity could not be satisified for long, and she found herself asking, "Golden One, what are we looking for?"

Her smile was acceptance of the unvoiced deal, and his face automatically shaped one of its own before turning to take the lead, shaking loose a few pieces of stray bark that had fallen onto him when he'd tried to scale the attached tree. Their sedate pace was much improved from before, allowing the stallion to sink his hooves slightly into the soil rather than risk hovering blind centimeters above it. Still, his prints were minor enough to belie his stature, and if they hadn't been so large, one might have mistaken the light impressions for a foal, or perhaps even an Usdia's tread. None of that crossed the kirin's erratic mind as he steered his companion through the trees, leaving a bewildered squirrel behind to muse over their motives.

Seconds into their journey she was speaking again, and he slowed his gait to better listen and respond, unused to both talking and walking at once unless it was internal discussion. He had never considered that she might have questions, and it took a few long moments to grapple with what he could give short of choking on all the information himself. Chimalsi did not want to bore her, though that seemed safer than enthusiasm at her task, something that he thought would leave traceries of her already boundlessly positive sentiment on the metals and gems. Or perhaps even bring her to make an attempt at stealing something away. The hairs along his spine bristled at the audacity, but he gave his body a brief shudder to dispel it, the metal he wore warm and soothing as a kiss of reassurance from his love. Nothing would happen. He would just need to watch and keep alert.

"For things like this," He finally gestured to the sun cross on his chest, letting it bounce slightly so that she could make it out better from his own primary colors. Immediately after he'd said it, he doubted his own answer, wondering if perhaps he was being too specific. There were objects that his sweetheart would wish fetched which were unlike the heavy necklace he sported. "Like me." He added, flicking his tail while he swiveled his head back to make sure she comprehended the material for the upcoming test. Beams glanced off his jointed horns, and his gaze was a gold weight that settled on her for a heartbeat before directing itself forward once more. They arrived upon the crossroads a few minutes later, and he circled elegantly around before coming to a halt, motioning to include the entire area with his snout. "They leave things here often, sometimes in the ground, sometimes hung on trees or draped near bushes. Dig, look, tell me if you find something."

The more time Alyssum spent beside the stallion beside her, the more she found their differences apparan, but rather than feeling increasingly awkward, she found herself intead growing comfortable. He was etheral, sunbeams and the lightest parts of earth, pratically floating on over the ground like dust; she was humus, solid and dark, black hooves sinking easily into her sister soil. Seperating herself, defining different characteristics and expectations, all made her grow less nervous around this new Soquili.

She tilted her head when her golden companion explained what she was to look for, eyes narrowing against the sudden flash from his heavy necklace, though even that did not protect her when the other Soquili blinded her with his natural array of gold. Relief came when he circled around their destination, but a slight frown appeared on her face. Where was she supposed to find something like him? Something gleaming and graceful, moving effortlessly, connected with nature while simultaneously seperate from the earth? Clearly this was some sort of riddle, and figuring out problems... had never been Alyssum's strong suit.

She shuffled about the crossroads, violet eyes searching for something, anything, that might meet the criteria offered to her. Something that could be on the ground or in the trees...

A blitz of color distracted her, and her eyes followed the motion. A long creature with goassamer wings, far larger than a fake star*, far faster hovered before her, and she marveled at how it flashed in the sun. Was this it? She motioned her head towards the creature, whinnying towards her compaion, "Are you looking for this Flying Treasure?**"

[*"Fake stars" is what Alyssum calls fireflies.

**The "flying treasure" is a dragonfly, just in case my description failz. xD]

When she moved off with at least a partial understanding of his guidelines, Chimalsi took up his own spot to search, nosing through vegetation and poking the cloven fronts of his hooves lightly into the dirt to serve as close-range metal detectors. Even with his new found help, the stallion knew that he would need to scour the entire area, regardless of the end the youthful girl barged relentlessly through. It wasn't that he didn't trust her - if that had been the case, he would not have allowed her accompaniment at all - it was merely that Chimalsi knew how to find things, his knack for it one of his earliest memories. The ability had once been used for other purposes: locating colts that brazenly wandered out into a rain storm; herbs with curative properties that were beyond valuable to the ailing. But that had been a long time ago, an era removed from how he lived now, content with the run of adoring whispers when his heart's love spoke and gold coins cascaded over each other to translate.

He'd just located something that looked to be promising under a lifted rock when her cry called him away, bright eyes squinting to make out what she was referring to. "Dragonfly." He corrected lightly, stepping closer to watch as it alighted on a strip of peeled bark, fourfold wings like a network of translucent ponds separated by hair-thin webbing. Its blue-green, sea glass body was fetching, and the negative reply died slowly on his tongue, furrows of consideration building around the natural striping upon his face. She had called it a flying treasure, and a closer glanced proved that was not inaccurate. Perhaps sensing the slow plod of his thoughts, the insect exploded back into frenetic flight, dancing for a blind moment on his muzzle before it was gone.

"Strange..." He spoke aloud, still feeling the electric tickle of tiny legs on his nose. But it was not the mare he addressed, his features still caught up in a more compelling thought. "Strange. I never thought of it." Why couldn't something so elegantly alive serve his ideal? With its lean, streamlined body shooting like a star born on the wrong side of the sun, its eyes polished, rounded jewels. Had it not been beautiful as well?

"It would be hard to keep," He decided, remembering the way it had fled, faster than the mammal he'd chased on foot. "It would leave, fly off." Even if he caught it between his teeth and brought it back, careful not to rip off the wings, it could fling itself forever upward and vanish into the dark ceiling, leaving his love irate. Yet her suggestion had raised a very curious possibility, and the stallion nearly lost sight of the inquisitive creature standing beside him, absorbed in other things as he let his mind guide it, twirling it around for examination, making notes and musing. Why not?

Her ears fell when corrected, but she nevertheless committed the name to memory, repeating it silently to herself over and over again. Dragonfly, dragonfly, dragonfly... though, honestly, she still preferred her own name. It seemed more fitting as the insect flitted away, for it did not have the reptilian aspects that she would have associated with the other creature, and it certainly did not fly like one. But the mare was always eager to learn, and the Golden One had already taught her the secret of the nut-gatherer, so he had to be correct in this as well. Dragonfly. Dragonfly. Dragonfly.

She watched, delighted when it landed on the stallion's muzzle and pleased that she had at least offered him a possibility he would not have thought of himself. Yet, he made no move to apprehend the Flying- the dragonfly, and she lowered her head to look at the ground as he explained the faults with the creature for his purpose. 'It would be hard to keep... it would leave, fly off.' More rules, more regulations... just making the puzzle harder.

But after her moment of disappointed consideration, she lifted her head again and gave a sharp nod, her purple eyes shining more than ever in determination. She would not give up... she would get it right, no matter how many times it took! "Okay... I'm sorry it wasn't what you wanted, but I think I understand now. I'll try harder and find something else, something really pretty that you can keep!"

Alyssum trotted in another direction this time, scanning the bushes and ground carefully, not wanting to miss anything that could potentially be what the stallion sought. Nothing caught her eye, however... nothing that she would consider worthy of the creature waiting for her. Her nostrils quivered when she scented water, and she stopped in her tracks whenever she realized that she had made it to the nearby spring. The clear, sparkling water made her realize how thick her tongue felt in her mouth, and she gratefully lowered her head when she got close enough in order to have a drink.

The cool liquid refreshed her, but something else caught her attention - a lily pad, one with the most perfect creamy blossom she had ever seen. Her tail swished in excitement even as she raised her muzzle, licking the last drops from her black-tinted fur. This was a treasure that wouldn't fly away... and as long as water was available, it could be kept, right? With these thoughts in mind, she plunged into the water further, stretching out her teeth to carefully grasp the green leaf and begin to pull it towards shore. Surely... surely this was a treasure fit for the Golden One!
