A Blessed E X I S T E N C E

    • About
According to Akorbaste, it's natural to feel superior when you have a reason to but that doesn't mean you have to stop being rational. Some noble drow really seem to let themselves go, but Akor carries a sense of restraint and refinement. Akor remains acutely aware that a drow lives in competition and refuses to let herself take her status for granted. Instead, she shows her devotion to Lolth.

Akor's intensity of devotion to her Goddess has not been able as of late to stop the feeling that her noble life is shallow. She finds herself torn as to why. Does she need more of a challenge? More opportunity? Akorbaste wonders if a need for something different could be a weakness.

Personality- Akor is very collected and critical. She is also inquisitive, whether it be figuring out a drow's motivation or visiting a new city. Akor is not a completely stiff personality by any means. She finds pleasure in the privileges of her life but finds it better to remain aware of herself. Akor has many times been called too stubborn and quick to act when her temper or religious sensibilities are provoked. Her normal penchant for careful consideration will go out the window if she is faced with something heretical. Her duty as a priestess always comes first.

Her capacity for empathy has never dissolved into sympathy, and Akorbaste has so far been successful in keeping her understanding of another's emotions in service only to her own needs.

Likes- the life of a priestess, curiosity, new places, talking

Dislikes- drow who can't control themselves, men who test their luck, cold, losing her temper

    • Important Possessions---
Headdress: Given to her by her mother upon completion of her training as a priestess. Significant in that each Matron passes it on to their eldest or otherwise important daughter. Akorbaste received it because she was the first daughter born in quite some time and would be the eldest surviving priestess daughter.

H I S T O R I C A L L Y speaking

    • Akorbaste is known for being exceptionally devoted to her Goddess Lolth. This burning devotion isn't without cause. The first daughter of Matron Dab'raxae, Laele, had died tragically before completing her priestess training. The accident which caused her death was so unusual and a result of such too-perfect coincidence that all considered it to be the hand of Lolth. To further humiliate the House, the young Laele died in the magma pits like a sacrificed male. The House Oussekt'ar suffered even more after Matron Dab'raxae had several times been rumored to be too lenient, especially with the males of the House. At the time of Laele's death, the Matron had two other daughters, Malune and Nedxena. Dab'raxae forced Malune to cut short her assassin focus and start training as a priestess. After a real lack of progress and interest, Malune went back to her assassin training.

Dab'raxae went without a pregnancy for many years. Akorbaste's birth was seen as a sign that Lolth was pleased with the Oussekt'ar House once again. To her sisters however, Akorbaste was no blessing. In fact, the Matron's favor was almost entirely focused on Akorbaste for several years. Her sisters made it their duty to press every nasty rumor into the young Akorbaste's ears.. "Lolth took our first sister away and she'll take you away too.. Dab'raxae is too weak to have a true priestess of Lolth in her line.. You've been so pampered and spoilt, you'll never even finish training.."

Tensions between Akorbaste and her siblings remain high. The headdress which Akor wears was given to her by her mother when she completed her training as a priestess. The headpiece is very significant. It had normally been passed down from Matron to, in theory, the upcoming Matron. Of course the current Matron did not know whom the next Matron would be, but the headpiece served as an indication of the most dominant possible successor. It was infuriating to Akor's older sisters to have this family symbol of power passed down to one of the youngest children. Dab'raxae felt very strongly about Lolth's indication of favor recurring with Akor's birth and priestesshood.

Growing up under the fear of the watchful eyes of her assassin and mage sisters, Akorbaste felt she understood why Dab'raxae could give in to leniency. Things can get exhausting and as a noble there is strong opportunity to indulge. The young priestess has watched her Matron carefully, worried that maybe her leniency runs deeper than any accusations about being a lazy noble. She wonders more and more about all the rumors that Dab'raxae had slipped from Lolth's path and towards embracing the compassion of Eilistraee.

Most of the Oussekt'ar wealth comes from slave trading. They have remained a wealthy house and always seek to spread their trading abilities to new places. Their wealth and strong control of their trade was the force that kept their House from falling too harshly when they seemed to lose Lolth's favor. As of late with increased trade and expansion from solely dealing in slaves to dealing in contracting other labor forces, the House has been able to gain some of its lost status back- settling around 16th in ranking. Akor always relishes any excuse to travel on account of House business. Akorbaste hopes to spread the distance between herself and her sisters, having no great tie to her house and sometimes thinking of leaving altogether.

F R I E N D or F O E ?

Favorable: If in bold, the relationship between Akor and this drow is working in her favor. (friend)
Conflict: If underlined, the relationship between Akor and this drow is likely one of conflict. (foe)
Uncertain: If italicized, the relationship is neutral or unclear.

    • Matron Dab'raxae: Akor's mother and head of House Oussekt'ar
    • Malune: Akor's eldest surviving sister, assassin
    • Nedxena: Akor's second eldest surviving sister, mage
    • Laele: Akor's deceased sister, first born
    • Umalik: A brother
    • Qilna: Cousin, daughter of Dab'raxae's favorite sister. Fellow (and elder) priestess but lazy, too comfortable hiding behind her mother's skirts and hopeful of being Matron. Deceased
    • Ranyraen: Former lover, may have been sent away by Malune. Would be fun to have someone play Ranyraen!

A second L O O K

Unfortunately my trip to the Eastdark could not last forever. It feels strange to not want to return to your own house, but I have no fondness for it. This is the first time I have started a journal since Nedxena burned nearly all of my belongings. I was quite young, though I remember my transgression clearly. I made a brutal comment comparing her to one of our brothers. It helped her in the end. She certainly never took her studies seriously before that.
Now I know Nedxena would not dare cross me so. Not unless she came to kill me.

It was Nedxena, however, who was cordial to me on my return. I haven't seen Malune yet, thank Lolth. But Nedxena was quietly polite. Maybe polite is too strong, but nothing went wrong between us. She controls herself much better than Malune and I think she is truly the most dangerous of the two. Certainly the more intelligent.

Eastdark was thrilling. I have gotten too comfortable and familiar with Llurth Dreir. I stayed away much longer than I needed to for the deal. But, with Lolth's will, I think I succeeded in increasing our future business. Matrons prefer being sent a priestess to conduct business with, not an assassin. Malune's tongue is as sharp as her blades, but she is more skillful with the blades.

News is in short supply for I will not get to meet with Umalik until tomorrow. He is a nice pair of eyes and ears around the House when I am gone.

I saw Qilna training the other evening. She was in the rear courtyard behind the temple, trying out something or other with another young priestess. I was fairly surprised to see her active, but I suppose she doesn't want to shamefully grow pudgy. Which she would, the sloth. She saw me watching and was distracted just enough to let her friend get the better of her. I had a laugh at her expense, slipping back inside the way I came while poor Qilna made it back to her feet. I talked with mother about her once, she thinks the girl lacks proper.. motivation. That will be deadly.

Well. The last male I had in the house, before my last trip I mean, seems to have met some unfortunate end. I could just assume Malune, it's possible enough. Not that I mind. I do have a sense of empathy, but that doesn't equal compassion. I imagine the males we use hardly feel disposable. They want their lives as much as we want ours. But unfortunately for whatever male I next find acceptable, I have no intent to change my ways. However, I am much slower to kill them than Malune is. I don't know exactly what possesses her. Her drive for blood is beyond what I see in most other female drow. She is wicked, a good assassin, but short-sighted.

Dab'raxae is trusting Nedxena a little more and more with the family business. Fine. I want to focus on my studies again. Enough of them all. Lolth be praised, she knows better than I.

An interesting drow, Ilythara, has crossed my path. Very fortuitously as well. It is pleasant to have a warrior so willing to serve the Goddess and not ask too many questions. By this I mean to say that Qilna is no longer an annoyance. No shame will she be on our House. Praise Lolth.

My mother had no words to say when she heard of the death. And that itself says it all. She was clearly on my side in this, which I know her sister (Qilna's mother) hated. Oh I relished the look on her face! She could barely hold her tongue before the matron. If only she had snapped..

I suppose removing one member of her lineage is enough to sate me for now. I hear she has a son but I have yet to meet the whelp. And he is all the better for it. I can only hope that more of her wretched relatives will come to their senses and be more dutiful to their House.

Well. I have begun thinking more and more about what my future might hold. I am well over one-hundred by now. I do not doubt that my mother still holds Lolth's favor, for the moment. I wonder how long that will last. I know there were things which happened before.. Drama and instigation which no one speaks of now. I can never be certain. I am her daughter but her sister is also a priestess..

The thought of a different House has come to mind before. Petitioning to start a new House is always possible. Things change in the ranks around here so quickly! Lolth has a wicked kind of brilliance when it comes to our society. There is one thing I would miss about this House: the profit from the slave trade is deeply established. For practical reasons, it would always be easiest to stay. We'll see if my mind changes anytime soon about that benefit.

Having spent a long sweltering hot day near the fire pits to attend a sacrifice, Akorbaste was ready to relax. The event was attended by most priestesses who reasonably could. Some of the highest priestesses in Llurth Dreir presided. The cause had been several male runaways. Having been tracked down, the priestesses rightly decided to make an excellent example of their treacherous hides. To shame them, they had also found a surface elf slave to sacrifice with them. It had been powerful to watch.

Akorbaste stretched and removed her headdress. She was always loathe to part with it. The servants had prepared a luxurious bath to the perfect temperature. There was one particular male drow whom she had long ago picked out to punish if the temperature was ever too hot or too cold. He must have made life hell for the rest of them too afterwards because they almost always got it right.

She slunk into the water, stirring up a fresh burst of the delicate fragrant oils that had tinted the water a light purple. A groan of pleasure escaped the priestess's lips.

The barest tentative creak alerted her. She tensed and glared out of the hazy steam as one of the servants started approaching again. "You know you are supposed to stay out of the way."

"Mistress, I apologize, there is someone here to see you. I told Malune you were indisposed but she assured me you would want to know he was here."

Akorbaste's jaw was clenched angrily at her sister's name. "He?"

"Ranyraen, Mistress."

Oh, Goddess. Lolth preserve me, I never thought I would hear that name again. Her heart flustered and fairly burst. What do I say? I can't run to him like a wet fool dripping from the bath. But I want to see what foolishness this is, that Malune is somehow involved..

"Mistress?" The servant inquired, no doubt puzzled at her reaction. She didn't think her surprise had shown so visibly but it obviously have.

"Go! I will be out shortly, have him wait until I'm ready." Akorbaste reasoned that she could save a little face by waiting and letting her stomach settle. Why was Malune involved in his reappearance? She could not get her mind around it.

"Yes, Mistress, do you need assistance?"

"A few minutes more. Bring some warm towels."

Goddess. Her mind spun. Akorbaste was not ready to deal with this today! Malune could be up to any number of things. Reluctantly, she had gotten herself clothed in a robe and went to the door.

Ranyraen! She drew in a sharp breath and waved him over. The tall drow male looked very well. None too different than she recalled. A little more muscular perhaps. He had been hard at work somewhere. Very much alive. Her mind was miffed with jealously for a fleeting moment. But if he had run off, he would not be stupid enough to return.

Akorbaste looked to see if Malune was watching. Her sister was nowhere to be seen. Wise of her. She waved Ranyraen into the bathroom. Not a usual place to entertain a guest, but Ranyraen was no usual guest. He had been in this private bathroom of hers before.

She eyed him carefully, still a bit tongue-tied. "Ranyraen.. I didn't think you were alive." It sounded so foolish as soon as she said it, but it was true.

He reacted with surprise, "I don't know why you would think that, Mistress Akorbaste," Akor cringed at the way he said her name- so cold! "You sent me away once, and your sister tells me now there was a mistake."

"Sent you away?" Her jaw dropped and she cursed, "Malune! You have no reason to believe now I suppose after thinking that, but I never did that to you Ranyraen. You were loyal. Is there any wonder Malune would want to hurt me like that? She knew where to find you too."

Akorbaste carefully watched Ran's face. He was very conflicted, much like she was feeling too.

Ran shrugged, "It is possible she could have done that. I could tell you were as caught off guard today as I was."

Well, it seems Ranyraen has appeared in my life again! Impossible, you would think, after I told you he was dead. It seems Malune has intervened somehow. She sent him to me today, so I would assume the wretch also sent him away. I have confronted her and she was full of lies as expected.

Her reasoning was that he had left of his own will, and she today had brought him back to gain good favor with me. Yes! She admitted to wanting my favor. I can only assume this means that Malune and Nedxena have had a significant falling out. Nedxena has made no outright move to get me to side with her, which I respect. The mage has wisely let the assassin dig her own grave. Ah. Assassins are not as bad as some, but their wits still rarely compare to a mage when it comes to politics!

I knew it would lead me in a circle, but I spoke to Nedxena. She implicated Malune as well for the disappearance of Ranyraen. She claimed she had a suspicion when it happened, and would gladly have outed Malune to spite her but she was not able to prove anything. I was somewhat surprised when my sister also confided in me.

Nedxena explained that her current battle with Malune was over some valuable slaves. My sister Nedxena likes to keep any slave that she thinks has some tie to shamanistic or magical powers, either drow or surface race. It is in line with her research as a mage and several times she has used these slaves to track down rare magical items. Malune had taken her slaves and squeezed orders from the Matron to disallow any more providing Nedxena slaves for this purpose. All slaves acquired effective immediately are to go to the market. Needless to say, Nedxena was very angered.

Malune is always seeking new ways to cut down the power of any mage in the house, her own sister most of all. I am starting to side more and more strongly with Nedxena.

I've settled on avoiding Malune for a while. Not hard to do luckily. I've been thinking more about Nedxena and her troubles in this House. Or, her troubles as she perceives them. She could be a highly important partner. She, I know, harbors some resent towards Matron Dab'raxae for not valuing the contributions she as a mage could make to the House. In other words, Nedxena thinks the Matron listens to Malune too much! I would agree.

I haven't pushed my hand too much in trying to disagree with Malune in front of the Matron. Perhaps I need to start stressing the matter. I wouldn't try to protect one sister over the other if I weren't sure that Nedxena could be more useful to me later than Malune can be. Malune is.. difficult to control and very stubborn towards her own motives. I can understand Nedxena better and she is much sharper. I admire her work and I think she is correct. Our Matron should not ignore Nedxena, she should encourage mages to develop in this House.
If I were Matron, I would be preparing differently for the House's future. But I am not the matron.

On a more exciting note, although Ranyraen was untrusting about my motives, I was able to welcome him back to House Oussekt'ar quite properly.

I am very distressed. That sounds impossible to admit, but there it is.

I have tired of all these wretched rumors. They have reached an incessant fever pitch concerning the Matron. I have procured a small carved spider, it is delicate but powerful. An enchanted thing. I think perhaps I don't need to say it but I am going to attempt to listen in on my mother's private chambers. It is something she would kill even her daughter for. That is only if she discovers the device.

I hope nothing comes of this. I hope I hear not a thing unusual. That is for the sake of the House's standing. Though on the other hand, I hope I do and there is some weakness to exploit for my own advancement. It cost me a pretty coin to get this spider out of its owner's hand. And that owner, oh so unfortunately, was Nedxena. I did not tell her where the spider was going to be used but she is no fool.
