Soul Calibur IV
Released: 7/29/08
System: x-box 360/ PS3
Player(s): 1- 2 Players

Story: Well the story varies counting on which character you choose in the game. But the goal however is the same. Each fighter is out to find the soul calibur and the soul edge. For what cause however is up to each character. This time however there is a new main boss; which is a man who created Soul Calibur.

Gameplay: Fighting Game. There are a few different modes you can play in the game. Also, graphics are again good but I have to say that I personally think the graphics for most characters looked neater in SC2.....
Modes Available are:
-Story-
Consists of choosing a playable character and fighting through battles. Each battle you make it closer to their goal; the soul edge/soul calibur and also learn more about their story.
-Mueseum-
Here you can view pictures and CG art. Or even weapons ect... It's basically as the name is. A place to view things in. As you play the game you unlock things or can gain points to purchase items. Here you can unlock some cool character original artworks.
-Character Creation
Create a character you'd like to play as or enhance and change an original character in the game. To create a new character you have to choose from a character already in the game (style wise) and then customize them. The cool thing is you can change hair/clothes/skin tone/voice and more. There are also more items and such in the game available to unlock as you play it through.
-Arcade
Play as a character you choose and battle enemies to have the higher score.
-Tower of Lost Souls
This mode is like a series of missions laid out to be completed. If you complete specific missions correctly then you can get special unlocked items which can be either weapons or items to use in character creation mode.
-Training
Test your character out and even master techniques for your favorite characters..

Battle System:
It's just like all the other soul calibur games. A screen with a life bar on top. And one on one on the screen. The enhanced part of SW3 though is the new tag system. Now you can call a character in and out of battle. Although it's not as swift and flowing as Dead or alive games it's not bad. I prefer their tag system in the wii soul calibur game though. It just seems...faster maybe or something...
-Skills-
Thought I should add more about the battle system. Each character has their own unique weapons and fighting styles. This is what makes soul calibur really unique too. The fighting styles work and flow really well together.

Rate: 7/10
Well that's what I'd give it at least. I was so excited when I heard it was coming out we both got it immediantly. However...the game lacked a few things that the soul calibur 2 had which made me disappointed. Also, the tag system was OK....with a rather short story mode.
First off, characters are awesome voice actors and charater models. Graphics I'd give a thumbs up too although I would prefer SC2 graphics any day. The characters looked more...lively in Soul calibur 2 while in three they all looked tired with the black circles under their eyes although I think maybe that was purposely done to show those who are corupted by the soul shards. (?)
I liked the tag system. Not bad for a start. Again, could have been more fun but it's fine. Now let's talk about the story mode. It was SHORT. But I'd say it was fine though....but by short I mean you could finish a characters story in 5 minutes literally.
Honestly the one thing that made me really disappointed in Soul Calibur 3 was the point that they took out a certain mode that they had in the 2nd game. It was like you travel the world or something and at each place was a story and a battle for you to preform before you make it to the final boss. I can't remember what it was called but it was that that really made soul calibur a long and fun playing fighting game.
All in all, my rating is....get the game for a short entertainment. ^_^ It's not bad...but I haven't picked it up since I bought it.....but it's not really as great as Soul Calibur 2. But at least rent it and give it a try. Lots of people love this game so you might. But also try out soul claibur 2. Now that's an addicting and fun fighting game!!

nice review, though I've not played any soul caliber games, i like teh idea of a loosely starwars game, and I'm a big fan of fighting games, especially if you can make up your own character biggrin

ooh I also found another 'zero punctuation' review of the game. yet again I giggle throughout it. Even though he slags it off xp

*gasp* A game I've actually played!!

I enjoy the Soul Calibur series-they're great when I need to vent anger....

I love making my own characters for fighting games too. The Star Wars characters are fun to play even though I'm terrible playing as them or fighting against them-I can never hit Yoda. >.<'

I love this game. I was itching to play it all month and now I finally have it. =O

The worst part is that they removed the Tale of Souls mode from SC3, which was basically a strategy/fighting mode with a story which revolved around your custom character. It was a great concept that could've been expanded upon.

Story mode was far shorter than I expected, which was also a massive downgrade of SC3's story mode. It actually explained what happened between stages. SC4, it seems almost like a random series of battles that lose focus after only a couple of stages. Alot of characters get what they want after only the second stage. Everything after that seemed irrelevant for them. Often times, the second stage is the only one that matters. The first one is usually a 'premonition'. The tag-team addition was pretty nice.

Multiplayer is still a winner. Except for the fact that you can't choose your weapons. You just get the basic weapons for that character. Except your custom character.

There's lots of goods for this game, but at the same time, there's alot of bads. Too many downgrades. Easy final boss too. I noticed that when you face guys that have double health in story mode, they take way more damage to make up for it. It seems a bit unnecessary.

Character designs are the best yet. Taki, Astaroth, and Zasalamel's SC3 outfits were better, and that's about it. Everybody else had great designs. You can now download SC2 equipment for character customization, including SC2 Ivy, Voldo, Nightmare, and others.

But Yoda saved this game for me. The Apprentice was pretty wicked too. His moveset is really fun to learn. His force moves are all incredible. His throws are real powerful too.

The Critical Finish was a good addition too. It really helped pick up the pace. You can't just sit there and guard the whole time anymore.

My favorite part is the character creation. It was really the only part of SC3 that remained, and was improved. Oh, no wait, they removed the unique weapons. You can only use the movesets of the other existing characters. Damn. Oh well, I usually use Seigfried's anyways.

You can make outfits for other characters too, using any armor you've bought in character creation.

I'd give it a 7/10. I wish I could give it more.
