The little filly didn't want to admit she was lost. Her delicate features, so often graced with a little smile or laced with mischief, were now furrowed in anxiety. It was an emotion she rarely felt and was currently pretending didn't exist; everything was going to be fine, everything was going to be well and dandy! But Zara found that the autumn path she had walked was unfamiliar, and the morning of play had suddenly transformed in to evening. The temperature had dropped and it was fast becoming cold, with the sun lowering closer to the horizon.

Zara had never spent a night alone before. . . not only would she be cold and miserable but what would her parents say? Were they out looking for her? Ooooh, part of the mare wanted nothing more than to cuddle in the comfort of her parents and feel their warmth, but then again, Baldev was going to be furious.

Absolutely, positively furious!

And that was enough to keep her from wanting to face her parents so soon. . . . The sun wasn't set yet, she had some time yet.

Her little blue tipped tail swished behind her as she delicately hopped the way she had come. The landmarks weren't familiar to her but she continued to hope that something, anything might jump out at her. This had been the way she had walked, wasn't it? No, the little filly wasn't entirely sure but it seemed logical. She had turned around, after all, upon realization that it was time to be getting back to her family.

But that wasn't working out very well for the mare. . . Still no sign of her silver and blue sisters, still no sign of Jaslyn or Baldev's intricate markings. Pausing, wrapping her tail anxiously around her hind leg, the little filly looked left than right. Well, which way did she go?

Did she continue onwards or try a new direction? Had she really wandered that far? Heaving a small and unlady-like sigh, the little one pawed at the frozen ground. Her mother was a wandering gypsy afterall; this sort of behavior ran in the family so maybe instinct would kick in and tell her where to go. . . . Or perhaps the spirits would give her a sign!

"Which way, which way," she mumbled, staring down at her hooves.

Four split black hooves, laced with muck from the damp forest ground, sloshed through the sea of leaves that apparently decided they would look oh so much better when layered in the dirt and piled by their parent trees. The young unicorn colt's feet dragged with the burden of an uneventful day riding on his back.

He'd been out and about all day, strolling through the crisp autumn air with a clear head, looking forward to an adventure of the nature that subconsciously found him in his wanderings most of the time. This day, however, was most unfortunate. Any and every animal with sense enough to feel the skin-prickling draft was busy getting their homes stuffed with food for the fast-coming winter. Taigi sighed at the unfairness of it all. Now he'd disobeyed his father without reason. He choked on a stifled giggle that came with the thought, 'Oh, how grateful I am that I inherited my horn from mother.'

Of course, this thought also brought the deep, longing sigh that always left an empty feeling in his heart. His mother was out there, exploring the world in its splendor. He was stuck in the boring forest, which was all well and explored by the colt already, with the rest of his family.

It was good time that he began heading home, he noticed. The sun painted the sky to match the fallen array of leaves littering the packed-hard earth and even he himself shivered when the wind rushed past. But he noticed something then. A scent, carried to him by the very wind that pierced him to his bones. It was dainty, like a pretty little flower. His features lit up and he shook again, from excitement and relief of the day not being a complete waste. Then he started running, muzzle high in the air, searching for the source. Until he bumped into it.

To say he 'bumped' in to her was a bit of an understatement. Considering the little ebony unicorn colt was running, and Zara for once wasn't quick enough on her hooves, when he collided in to her still form it sent her stumbling forwards. She half cried out in protest, struggling to keep her cloven hooves beneath her; no matter how much of a surprise getting run in to was, that was still no excuse for a lady to fall!

The embarrassment would be too much to bear, especially since she was the graceful one in the family!

Taking a moment to recompose herself, Zara finally whirled round to offer the colt a little frown. She almost objected before the words died on her lips - was this Melancholy? No . . . Her hope that her first and closest friend had once again returned to her fizzled as she realized he wore no red horn, and had a lions tail just like herself. Perhaps, most importantly of all, he didn't smell of oranges.

No, whomever it was that had run in to her was not her dear friend; it was someone new, someone different, and someone obviously in a sort of rush! "Someone's in a hurry to be somewhere," she commented, purposely stepping to the side so he might continue on his way. Though her surprise had been replaced by overall good humor (she wasn't hurt and she hadn't fallen), the little filly was proud her temper hadn't flared. Sometimes she objected to loudly, but lately had found she had much better control over it. . .

What was it her mother said. . she was . . maturing? That was it!

She was bigger than the colt, though not by much. Older she was, certainly, but she would always be a very petite female. All the better for dancing, thankfully! "I'll move over here so you can continue unhindered," she added with a giggle, her tail swishing happily behind her.

The colt kept up running until he realized that 'it' was actually another unicorn youngling. A filly, to be precise. He could tell because of the small things he noticed: such as the feminine glint in her violet eyes. There was a rush of words that flew from her mouth when he ran into her that went in one ear and out the other. Did he run into and past her? Yes. And it was most unusual and rude of him.

Taigi came to an abrupt stop after noticing that his hooves were still kicking up a mess of fallen foliage and dust, leaving slight imprints in the hardened earth as the unicorn ran through. He swerved about, facing the direction from which he came. It was easy to tell this particular direction because an evident trail of either scattered or pounded-into-the-ground leaves wore in and the wind wasn't too enthusiastic to wipe it away for once.

He started back through the afore mentioned trail, stopping a few good "feet" from the other unicorn and lowered his head in greeting, as he learned this gesture to be respectful. When he did this, he noticed that the female was indeed dainty, but her size was slightly greater than his own. This, for some reason, made him feel inferior. He raised his head proudly, as if to make up for the lesser height, but kept his ears flattened.

As his tail made its way to curl around one of his hind legs, he decided to speak. An apology was in order, after all. "Hello, I'm Taigi!" Might as well start with an introduction. "Sorry about bumping into you, there! I was running rather than thinking."

Zara watched the ebony one with renewed curiosity as he turned toward her. He did look an awful lot like Melancholy, but reality sunk in that her once best-friend was now too big and too adult for her. Where she was still small and little, he had fast grown up and away; it wasn't fair for life to leave her without any friends her size and age but such was the way of it.

A shame she had to be born too late for Melancholy. . . . But at least she looked older than Taigi. Giving the little colt a bright smile, Zara couldn't help but be pleased that he was indeed a unicorn. Though she held a fascination of any race, she knew that she could proudly talk about this little colt to her family without fear of her fathers objections. She loved Baldev dearly and though she didn't fully understand why unicorns had to be the best, that was just the way it worked; she knew any non-unicorn friends had to be her secret.

Better to keep papa happy than get herself in any more trouble than she usually caused!

As he dipped his head, Zara remembered her own manners and bowed. Not only did she dip her neck, but she extended one of her front cloven hooves before daintily standing upright once again. "It's nice to meet you, Taigi! I'm Zara!" Her little blue tipped tail wagged happily behind her, pink eyes bright. "You sure seemed to be in a hurry though - where you going?" The little filly was still young enough to be bold in her questions with little care about poking and prying in to ones business.

There was no reason to be huffy or angry about the mishap; she hadn't fallen, hadn't dirtied herself and otherwise was still in one peice. The real question remained - where was he off to on such an eve? Part of her guessed home. . .most foals were expected back to their herds and parents before night fall. Or so she'd experienced.

He watched in fascination as the filly named Zara bowed in a graceful, fancy manner. She must've come from a very proud, reigning family of sorts. This made him feel the more inferior and his ears pressed firmly against his head. The foal began to ponder upon his own manners, 'was my bow much too simple?'

But he was startled by her question. It was unusual, for he was the one that usually aimed the first question at the other. His intentions were to ask whoever he found questions, for that matter. Not only that, but she had also asked him this twice, he was quick to realize, as the wind seemed to decide to shove the words that he'd let go of earlier back into his cranium. He wasn't at all intimidated by her question, but hesitated answering for a reason even he couldn't put his hoof on.

After 'spacing' for a minute or two, Taigi blinked at her before drawing in a sharp breath. He had been nothing short of rude to his new acquaintance. What with first contemplating her heritage, knowing nothing about her, then avoiding her single question, which he now rushed to answer, "nowhere, actually. Nowhere in particular, that is." He gave her a nod, half in apology and half in confirmation of his own statement.

The little filly watched as the unicorn before her took a moment to reply. She wasn't at all upset about the run in - she hadn't gotten hurt or, more importantly, hadn't been soiled by a fall so honestly there wasn't any reason to aplogize. In fact, running in to Taigi meant that she was distracted by her own plight and fear. . . . It was still getting late, but at least she had someone nearby. Once again, home could wait.

For a little while at least.

It wasn't often the filly had a chance to bump in to foals her age. Long had a pattern developed where the little gypsy-princess made friends but they soon abandoned her to growth or other playmates. When was the last time she had seen Melancholy? Furthermore, when was the last time she had met anyone outside of her sisters?

Oh, it was a terrible state of affairs, or so the little filly believed. Her social life was extremely limited for one that loved adventure and exploration. To have no friends was a sad lot indeed.

Her blue tipped tail wagged a bit as Taigi finally answered. Her eyes did widen a bit in surprise before she giggled, stamping her hoof firmly in the ground. "Well you certainly were in a rush to get there! I fear I'm upsetting your plans by having you actually stay to talk. . .because that means you've gone from running to no where to running in to something and someone!" The little mare giggled softly once again at the prospect - it wasn't everyday she met someone in a rush to go no where in particular. Running for the sake of running? Well. . . Zara much preferred to have a destination in mind, even if such a place was only made up or impossible to reach.
